Akutan is considered to be the 2nd most dangerous volcano in all of Alaska. Do you agree with this assessment? The USGS methodology takes into account eruptive frequency, nearby population centers, maximum eruption size, amount of regional infastructure, and the amount of regional air traffic.

I would agree as the volcano has a history of large eruptions and previous eruptions have affected areas where people now live. Also since the town of Akutan is downhill from the main summit, in the event of a large explosive eruption there is a decent chance that a pyroclastic flow could reach the town.

Considering the near by population I would agree. Alska is beautiful but difficult to make a life in. So much more difficult if a volcano destroys your means of doing so.

I'd love to go to these islands and take samples of rocks and plants before the next major eruption, or before Russia invades them to "get them back" as they threatened to.

In a world of infinite possibility, scientific probably seems best in my opinion. i have always admired the USGS as leaders in the field of Cartography !:-) 💜🙏⚡️

The shape of that island is pretty different than what i would of expected from volcanic island. Its like its part of the mainland and part made by volcano itself. I suppose any volcano in that area is dangerous just based on having a deep water lake that could be a hazard to town if eruption was just right.

I know more about groundwater flashing to steam than any reasonably should. Nature videos were my favorites. So couldn’t imagine having your resources at my disposal when I was a little squirt. Your videos remind me of Popular mechanics and “there goes a fire truck” from back in the day. I mean this as an extreme compliment. Your channel takes me baxk

The creek that runs along the north side of the valley that drains to Hot Springs Bay has hotsprings that will melt the glue from your rubber boots. Boiling hot at the surface. Two springs are directly next to along the north side of the creek.. The entire valley floor is a swamp with tangled brush alder.. this is exactly where the Japanese Zero crashed during WW2. The pilots grave was nearby. His body was moved in 1987 or 88.

The two small houses above the village of Akutan is their emergency Tsunami Shelter. They are much higher than the village itself. It has been there for at least 40 years.

When I used to work on fishing boats for cod and pollock on the Bering Sea Akutan was where we often offloaded our fish. One time we hiked up to check out the hot springs, thinking we might get to enjoy a natural jacuzzi. Ha ha, no way! You could literally cook lobster and shrimp in that water, and even putting your hand in the water for 5 seconds risked 3rd degree burns. (Yes, I know there's no lobster in Alaska waters. Just trying to illustrate how scalding hot the hot springs are.)

Great video, as usual. I love learning about the historical activity of volcanos I am unfamiliar with. TOPIC REQUEST: I would love to hear what you know about how floods impact volcanic activity, particularly with the recent flooding in Yellowstone. THank you in advance!

Thank you GH, the Aleutian arc is fascinating. Have you done a video about the 2016/2017 eruption of Bogoslof? If not, consider it as an official request! ;).

Just found out that Yellowstone Park is closed due to extreme flooding. I wonder if this would affect the actual volcano itself?

I know this isn't related to this volcano, but the very ground that another volcano in the US is covering. What's happening at Yellowstone right now is a tragedy. It's not related to the volcano itself, but I know that region has been discussed on this channel before.

Is there any evidence that huge rainfall in a caldera might cause more steam build up at depth? I'm asking because of the Yellowstone flooding. I wonder if the groundwater will cause more water activity.

Would be interesting . I’m sure there is a continual survey on geological activity in the park. Unsure if it’s publicly available

Think about it: Yellowstone caldera (like many other large calderas such as Taupo and Toba) has a big lake right in the middle of it. If that massive volume of water isn't having some measurable effect, it's doubtful some extra rain will.
