Your post raises several issues and it sounds like they relate to the ultimate question of whether or not “overseas Israelis” “stole” land from “Palestinians” to establish “their state.” The simple answer is: No. No one “stole” land from Arabs to build the modern state of Israel. To have something “stolen” it has to be “yours” in the first place and then it has to be illegally “taken” by someone else. People who allege that Israel was created by “stealing” Palestinian Arab land usually use one of two different arguments for Palestinians “owning” land. One of them is “sovereignty. “ They claim that there was an independent state of Palestine and that foreigners illegally “took” it and “gave it” to someone else. For this claim, the issue of whether or not there was an independent state of Palestine is important. However, it also overlooks the fact that this argument also assumes that the “only” Palestinians (or the only ones who count) are “Palestinian Arabs” not “Palestinian Jews.” A related and racist notion is the idea that Arab immigrants to Palestine are "real Palestinians" and that Jewish immigrants to Palestine are not. This is important since British records show over 500,000 Arabs immigrated INTO Palestine between the 1920's and 1940's. When you combine this with the UNRWA notes that many of those registering as "Palestinian refugees" in 1948 were clearly Arabs from OTHER states who were not Palestinians but fake registrants, MOST "Palestinian Arabs in 1948" were fakes or recent immigrants. The question of whether or not it was an independent state is also important because it is related to the issue of the disposition of the West Bank. The land was won from Jordan in a defensive war. Jordan won it in an offensive war. This makes “ownership” of the land from a sovereignty point of view very complicated and probably explains why all the many attempts to change UN SC Res 242 to require that Israel withdraw from “all” the land won in that war were all defeated and instead it was passed as requiring all parties to peacefully negotiate final status borders. The second foundation for arguing that Palestinian Arabs had land stolen relies on the claim that Palestinian Arabs owned private property and it was illegally taken away from them. This is also false. According to British land documents, Palestinian Arabs owned about 5% of the land in Palestine; Palestinian Jews owned about 7% of the land, Foreign Arabs owned about 20% and the rest was all owned by the government and leased to locals. That has been the custom for over a thousand years. Most land is owned by the government (the UK and before that two different Ottoman Empires). But, I would also like to point out that in establishing independence, “private property” is to be unaffected and is not relevant to independence decisions, unless are going back a few hundred years to only allow “land owners” a vote. So, again, by and large Palestinian Arabs did not have land stolen from them. In some discrete cases, it did happen. However, under Israeli law any Arab who can demonstrate they legally owned property and it was lost in the wars either gets the property back or fair market compensation. And it works. As of 1993, over 200,000 dunums of land have been repatriated to Arabs. Just a few months ago, some Palestinian Arabs argued that settlers had illegally taken their private property on which to build homes. They had their day in court and the Israeli court evicted the settlers, as it should be. No one should have their private property seized. Sadly, there is no such similar process for Palestinian (or other) Jews whose property was seized by Arabs. Heck, Jordan ethnically cleansed 100% of the Jews from Jerusalem the West Bank, and Gaza in 1948; Palestinian Arabs ethnically cleansed every Jew and stole their property from Hebron in 1929, Sfad in the 1800’s etc… You also mention “overseas.” According to immigration records, over 500,000 Arabs immigrated into Palestine post 1920’s. This means that roughly half of the Palestinian Arabs moved there no earlier than the 1920’s (if at all). (I say at all because the UNRWA admitted that their registration figures of refugees in 1948 were grossly inflated with poor Arabs from neighboring states who wanted the aid package. No one imagined what would eventually happen to the “Palestinian refugees.” In fact, approximately 80% of Palestine was granted independence in 1946 as the Jew Free state of Jordan. The remaining 20% of Palestine had both Arabs and Jews living in it. They both wanted independence and both wanted to control the government of that state. In the end, the UK gave it to the UN , which decided to create 2 states with borders and governments based on demographic majority. Majority Arab areas were to be a second Palestinian Arab state with an Arab government; Majority Jewish areas were to be the modern state of Israel with a Jewish government; and Majority Jewish Jerusalem was to be an “international city” open to all and controlled by no one state. If you want to use the analogy of the “Irish” then a better analogy would be if there were TWO warring groups of Irish both of whom wanted independence. One of the groups of Irish may have had a history of ethnically cleansing the OTHER Irish group. And in the end, they got independence not as ONE Irish state but as two, each one governed by the majority population based on the type of Irish group living there. But, the Arab Irish decided that that was not good enough that they should ethnically cleanse the OTHER Irish. Let’s make the analogy even more like the real situation on the ground. The Irish Catholic side has 20% of their population as Arab Irish and their rights are protected. The Arab Irish immediately ethnically cleansed EVERY single Irish Catholic from Arab Irish controlled areas. And now the Arab Irish are claiming that the Irish Catholics “stole” all the Arab Irish land to create their Irish Catholic state. And now someone argues on a bulletin board that the Irish Catholics are stupid for resisting…
