My mother raised afghans, using House of Orange bloodlines crossed with a Garnet line. We took our brood dogs with us to our mountain cabin (above timberline) all the time, where we could let them run loose on our long hikes. (since they were our brood bitches we did not keep a show coat on them.) Yes, gaze hounds go after things far away, but they would keep us in sight -within 1/4 mile- and basically keep up with us. When we headed home, they knew to come along if they wanted dinner. Afghans are also terrific jumpers, easily jumping 6 ft. fences (or over a car!), and we clocked one of our males easily keeping up with our car going 35 mph, laughing all the while. They are clowns and divas. Because they are rather bony, they like to lounge on cushioned couches , beds and chairs, crossing their forelegs most elegantly. Surprisingly, they can be fierce watch dogs as well. Their coats are not water proof at all, so in a moist climate they need to be groomed at least every other day to keep them from getting matted. A long show coat takes at least an hour if you groom them daily but they look like liquid gold when they move in their long show coat. You have to be devoted if you want one!

Before I got my Afghan Hound, I heard so many people warn me about their long, luxurious hair and how much maintenance it would be. But let me tell you, she is worth every minute spent brushing and styling her coat. She's actually the most well-behaved dog I have owned! I have a sweatshirt that says 'Afghan Hound Mom: Master of the hairbrush and the art of patience' and I wear it every day lol so true 🐾

My Mom raised Afghan hounds; she shanghaied me into being the groomer. The puppies are darling--wooley all over. Afghans need to run. We clocked ours running beside our car at 35 mph. many times, and they would be laughing. We had a male, Rikki, who jumped clear over Dad's Studebaker car. Yes, they try to escape, often! Yes, they are so tall they can and will counter surf. They are so boney that they like/need soft furniture and beds to lie on. They are rather independent, i.e.: I'm doing it because I want to and not because you tell me to. But when you get a bond with one, they are great fun to hike with; just be sure to have a re-call collar on them or you won't get them back if they take off after something! Think very carefully before you get one--they are not just a decoration.

I had an Afghan Hound when I was a child. She was more hyper than the dogs in this video, but essentially a mellow, cooperative dog. She was unfortunately also the least intelligent dog i've ever had, but her beauty and sweetness made up for it.

I doubt that she was not intelligent, sometimes Afghans are stubborn, and if they're not stimulated properly, they become bored and then VERY hard-headed! It can be extremely difficult to train them, it's like they need a reason!🐕😊

I loved this episode. A smile on my face all the time. And many viewers could get attracted to these hounds and try to buy one. The challenges of living with these were mentioned very briefly. "These are sight hounds." Translation: they don't use their ears (they don't listen). "Some of them climb walls/fences." Translation: you will have a hard time keeping them fenced in. "They chase everything they see, between rabbits and buses." Translation: don't take them for a walk near a deer park. "They steal your food." Translation: You cannot leave anything unsupervised when these dogs have access to it. If you don't have discipline, of the militaristic, or ritualistic, or little bit autistic or very OCD kind, don't get into these on impulse.

Two major inbreeding problems: hip dysplasia and cardiac instability. Lost my all black afghan when she was 2 years old in the middle of her run one day- massive heart attack. Vet said if you get one to live past three years old then they would be ok for the rest of their normal life span. Had a blonde male live to 12. Both were rescue dogs. They do have peculiar personalities, almost cat-like aloof at times. Lots of grooming work, but not as crazy as a husky in pre-summer bloom!

As a child of the 70's, my grandmother had an afghan and she was a very aloof. She was gorgeous and as a child I loved brushing her hair, at the time my hair was very long and the same colour as yours. I would have been 8 or so and my fathers family was all gathers at our house to celebrate Christmas. Adja would always be put away in my bedroom as she could be a little bit rambunctious at gathering with small children around. She was lying on my bed and next to the bed was a bookcase, I went in to grab a book for us children. I must have surprised her because she jumped off the bed and proceeded to bite me straight through my bottom lip, all four eye teeth went straight through and I was bleeding quite a bit and walked into the lounge room and started caused a scene. Luckily enough we lived above a dental clinic and they stitched me straight away" It

We have had 3 rescue Affies in our lives. Yes you do have to put the work in to make them comfortable, but they don't have to be show dogs. Clip them underneath so they are not uncomforble and keep the ouside long if youn want the 'look'. My Layla was found on the street because she was too old for a 'show dog', Toby was too wild, and my lovely boy Houston got 'too big'. Affies are amazing dogs. We love our hounds, so now we have a shorter haired, but just as nutty, Saluki, Rosie.

My wife and I had one back in the mid seventies and let me tell you Alladin was quite a trip. He was very loving to the two of us but that was all. If anyone came around we had to be on our toes because he was extremely protective of us and he meant business. We put him in shows and he won everyone he entered. Also he was very large for his breed weighing well over 100 lbs and hated Doberpinchers (sp). They finally asked us to stop showing him that other participants were afraid of him and we understood so we complied. He finally got so bad we were worried about our daughter because we had to make him an outside dog because he didn’t like her. We finally had to have him put to sleep and that crushed me and the vet wouldn’t do it unless I came in and held him during the process. He was my friend more than he was my dog and he will never be forgotten. The second best loved dog was our Goldendoodle named a Julip and sorry to say after seventeen years we came home from our Christmas service last Christmas and she had died without us there with her. Breaks my heart still just to have to write this short memory of her. They were loved equally.

I've had Afghans all my life. I pay someone to groom them every few weeks (I have 2) but I also clip off their coats to about 2 inches as I don't show them. They look like puppy Afghans with the shorter hair and look stunning in a different way. If people want to have an Afghan, never ever let them off the lead unless they're fenced in, and make your home absolutely secure so they can't get out. I had one hit by a car when I was a teenager - one of the worst days of my life. They may - or may NOT - come back basically and have no road sense (sight hounds don't have peripheral vision). Maybe most important is the temperament and personality of the owner! If you are a loud, aggressive person with no sense of humour, don't get an Afghan. They're sensitive and will be miserable with you (well most dogs would be, but Afghans would be particularly unhappy). And they are not a dog for control freaks. As the lady said in this video, they're independent-minded compared with other breeds. I love their grace, athleticism and their deep, aggressive bark. They're hilarious to live with and great house dogs actually. Mostly they prefer couches and beds to being outside in the garden. And they're always beautiful to look at.

They have long hair coming out of their chin. I don’t think I noticed that before. These dogs are amazing. When they run all their hair flows.

Love Afghans - had a blonde named Sasha - SO LOVELY, SUCH A GOOD NATURE - she went to heaven - I saw her there when I visited - will be with her one day - I too would not have any other breed though my friend has 2 Huskies and oh my how they commicate and love their blue eyes - so they are my 2nd favorites.

In Afghanistan we call them "tazi", while the word for dog is "sag". The difference is that they are breed specially for hunting.

How much does a puppy cost in your country ?
@noornorderm4756
@noornorderm4756 3 жыл бұрын
@@jo.a7189 Of this type of dogs or in general. It depends. This dogs are very popular coz of their hunting skills. Around 100-500 usd for a puppy I would say, which is expensive considering the poverty there.

I remember back during the late 1970's my brother had a male friend who would come over to our house with 2 big silver full bred Afghan hounds, they were so majestic and were just a sight to see walking side by side and very quiet, never barking and always calm.

@@THEE.apples Hello ii Marquise, I just saw your post, thanks for responding! Yes I have heard that you can purchase a puppy- from "boutiques", usually only teacup types, but I will definitely look into your suggestion . I've heard of horrible stories, where you send the $$ and then you don't even get a puppy, or you get a pup and that is NOT what you've purchased, but I think I'll check this out anyway 🐩🐕🐶 Also I'm not on Facebook, so I think that would help!! Thank you for the suggestions, Katy 😊
