There is a country in Africa that almost nobody has heard of. The country, called Somaliland, is its own country in pretty much every way. It has its own government, flag, economy, currency, military and passports. It declared independence from Somalia in 1992 after a decade of struggle against the ruthless Barre regime. This conflict arose from a larger, older cultural difference formed by the colonial partition of Somaliland between Britain and Italy. While Somaliland is its own country in pretty much every way, no other country has officially recognized this. There are plenty of reasons why. Some countries have relations with Somalia that they don’t want to sacrifice, and others fear recognizing Somaliland would lead to other secessionist movements across Africa. Despite this, Somaliland is working hard to increase its international relevance and gain acceptance. It is working to become a trade hub and utilize its natural resources. In the future, we may just see Somaliland be accepted on the international stage.

this is Somaliland, it is a country that has gone through many problems caused by the government of Somalia before it broke up, it is a country where its people have seen war, rape, murder, robbery, colonialism and genocide. It is a country where the government of Somalia committed many violations that are still felt today. Before 1981, the people of Somaliland decided to defend themselves from the enemy who killed their people and massacred them for a long time. They formed an organization called S.N.M and fought against the strong government of Somalia, and finally they managed to defend themselves from the hostile government of Somalia. When the Somali government removed them from the land they lived in, they announced that they had separated from Somalia. When they declared independence on May 18, 1991, they established their own government, named it the Republic of Somaliland, and elected a leader elected by the people. Somaliland has had 5 presidents elected by the people. The current president of the country is Muse Bihi Abdi who was one of the fighters of S.N.M. Today, Somaliland is 32 years old and has not yet received the recognition and support it deserves from the world. Somaliland is the safest country in Africa, there is no problem like Somalia's unstable government, many people may think that Somaliland and Somalia are the same but that is wrong, they are not the same but two countries. and different. . . . They have built everything together for 32 years, and there is no one else to support them, they deserve international recognition. Finally, we welcome anyone who wants to see with his own eyes that Somaliland is very different from Somalia. I welcome you if you want to visit Somaliland, thank you

How they are better than the Somali government? Currently, they are killing and shilling their own people in Somaliland, destroying properties and hospitals. Basically, this is simply because these people don't want to leave Somalia, and they don't believe in the Somaliland project, a project that was created by foreign nations to exploit the enormous natural resources that are available in Somalia. You must be careful about what you take from the mainstream media.

because the f*cking Arabs brang tribalism to Somalia, thus dooming my country. I will fix this by uniting Somalia with Somaliland and then banning clanism which was one of the reasons the Somali nation couldn't be stable, thus split into two countries. the Somali National movement was supposed to unite all of Somalia but they declared independence, thus betraying the great Somali nation. 99% of people in Somalia can speak Somali

Somaliland and Somalia was two different countries, Somaliland was its own country before going into illegal and unratified union domestically and internationally. 1. We are not separists, colonial part or rebels trying to separate Somalia, but we was Internationally recognised country older than Somalia, having our colonial borders just like the rest of Africa and the World. 2. Somaliland have the right to end the failed union with Somalia, just like Gambia and Senigal Egypt and Syria and Gambia. 3. Somalia destroyed our cities and wholly our country, they killed more than 200,000 civilians, maimed of more than that and displacing millions. 4. Somaliland was independent and out of that failed union longer than the years of illegal union. 5. Somalia has zero control over Somaliland, we have our own democratically elected government, money, flag, anthem, military, police, banks and our way of dealing with the rest of the world. 6. The UN should accept the divorce between Somaliland and Somalia.

God luck attracting foreign investment from companies and countries as they will need the permission of the federal government of Somalia. Also most of the oil wells in Somaliland are in Sool and Sanaag regions and clearly those people don’t agree with somaliland on independence hence why there’s fighting in Laascaanod right now. Also I know Awdal is blessed in natural resources from Gold to oil. We both know Awdal is not big on independence as well. It’s funny how the most naturally rich regions of somaliland are all against independence from Somalia. God luck convincing those people on independence while taking their resources.

@JohnDoeX1966
@JohnDoeX1966 Жыл бұрын
There is no major difference whatsoever between a Somali in the north (Somaliland) and a Somali in the south (Somalia). They are 100% identical. There are a few linguistic differences (pop vs soda kinda thing), but it’s minor. The so called “tribe” difference is merely a common ancestor, that’s all. Tribes don’t signify any actual difference between Somalis. Most Somalis despise the tribalist mindset because it’s primitive and divisively destructive. Somalia is the most homogeneous country in Africa and among the top in world (outside of Korea, Japan and a few others).

According to the Somali Issas’ legend, it is thought that the name Djibouti comes from the name of a beast called ‘buti‘ (‘bear’) that used to terrorize the population. Upon its defeat - ‘jab‘ in the Somali language - after a wilful, pertinacious chase, it was said that “meeshi butida lagu jabiyey” (“the beast was defeated”), and so they chose to name the country after this legend.

How can the ummah ever unite when Somalis that share literally everything from religion to blood can’t even unite with themselves yet we cry wolf tears when Palestinians or uyghurs are oppressed. @maankaabe please explain?

Somaliland is not internationally recognized because: 1) Somaliland is still a part of civil war, even Puntland from east occupying Somaliland's territory. 2) The country independence is not agreed upon the main currently 'non-existance' government of Somalia. 3) Somehow, western countries pick-and-choose which country they want to recognize despite say 'We defend the right of democracy and self-determination' a lot. 4) Red Sea access. Somaliland can just block the Red Sea trade if something wrong happens. 5) "One Somali Policy". All this country thought this actually exist, but no, it is not. So, most of the country saw the war thorn + poorest country (even Somaliland is richer than Somalia) is important. Imagine Isaaq tribe is massacred during the early 1980s and then they have been forced to united with former massacrist.

There are two points to clarify regarding your statement on video about one clan enclave propaganda. Firstly, there was never a massacre; it's all fabricated by the SNM, which is essentially the same as the Isaaq clan, forming what is referred to as one clan's enclave in North Somalia. Secondly, not all tribes from North Somalia are affiliated with the SNM or Isaaq. For instance, Awdal State of Somalia, bordering Djibouti, consists of the Samroon and Issa tribes. Khaatumo State of Somalia, with its capital in Laascanood, is home to the Dhulbahante, Foqoshinr, and Midhaam tribes. It's worth noting that Laascanood was shelled by the SNM on February 6, 2023, resulting in 250,000 civilians displaced, 800 deaths, and 3,000 injuries. However, the people of Khaatumo managed to repel the SNM on August 25, 2023, capturing 300 militia members who are currently awaiting trial in Laascanood prison. Additionally, most weapons were seized by Khaatumo State of Somalia. Maakir State of Somalia, with its capital in Badhan, is predominantly inhabited by the Warsangari people, who are not affiliated with the SNM or aligned with its ideologies; they operate under the Somalia federal state. Furthermore, the SNM supports Al-Shabaab because they want Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, to stabilize financially. It's notable that all the leaders of Al-Shabaab come from the SNM or Isaaq clan. It's important to recognize that a tribe alone will never constitute a country. Please get your information correct.

I have to say many Somalis including myself are incredibly disappointed with the biased account of this issue. Let me clarify a few points: 1. Firstly you seem to be pushing the idea that due to the colonial powers rule over Somalia, that Somalia and Somaliland are two “different countries”. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Actually, the colonial powers of Italy and Britain both recognised the region as being one national identity (being Somali) and they agreed within themselves to a power sharing agreement to divide up the land. Besides, we Somalis do not accept colonial borders as our standard. There was no such thing as Somalia or Somaliland before the British or Italians came. There was only one ethnic Somali background with various tribes spread out. 2. Which brings me to my second point, you are pushing a false narrative that Somalia and Somaliland have different economies and cultures. This is not simply not true. Somalis are and have always historically been a very deeply tribal people. There are numerous clans and sub clans and sub sub clans that it’s hard to keep track. However besides the tribal difference, there is virtually no difference. All Somalis are Muslim and all Somalis whether I’m Somalia or Somaliland speak the Somali language. Economically Somalis near the ocean have always been sea merchants and fisherman while the ones inland have been pastoral herders. Down in the south of Somalia, there is an agricultural industry due to the fertile lands and rivers. So as you see, Somalis are one and the same. Only difference is tribal difference which is not homogeneous in any region. In Somaliland itself, the power is mainly concentrated among the Isaac clan who try and dominate all the other tribes in the region who don’t want to be a part of Somaliland and want to be one with their brothers and sisters in Somalia. In recent months, there has been heavy attacks and violence carried out by the Somaliland regime (mainly Isaac tribe) against the Dhulbahante tribe who refuse to be a part of Somaliland and consider themselves as part of the rest of Somalia. Similarly in Somalia, there is not one singular tribe but a wide range of different tribes all vying for power. 3. Thirdly: the Siad Barre issue: Siad Barre was a dictator in Somalia who ruled for a period of over 20 years in Somalia. Whilst he did initiallybring positive change to Somalia by running government campaigns to raise the literacy rates, reduce poverty and free educations, he did hover in the latter years on his reign, fall into despotism and nepotism. After the defeat at the hands of the soviet and Cuban aided Ethiopians, he increasingly started facing resistance in his rule as people realised he wasn’t as powerful as he once was. As a result, he started surrounding himself with people of his inner clan for saftety and started targeted attacks against prominent people of other tribes that could pose a threat to him. This terrror campaign wasn’t only aimed at the Isaac clan but any clan that wasn’t his clan that he saw as a threat. For example, the majerteen clan faced violent attacks from Barre where he poisoned their water sources, assasinated popukar majeerteen leaders and invaded Majeertten populated cities. In the end, his own despotism backfired and as a result, the Somali state collapsed in on itself. Hence the slaughter began without discrimination on tribe and people from every tribe from every region in whether Somalia or Somaliland died in the hundred if thousands. It is true that Siad Barre led a horrible campaign against the Isaac (who along with the majeerteen mentioned earlier) were the bigger tribes capable of challenging his rule. Every Somali condemns the attack of Hargeysa and the massacre which was carried out by this disctator. However Somaliand likes to blow the figures out of proportion to legitimise their current regime and their attempted secession. 4. Lastly, regarding the future, you are making it seem like only Somaliland is improved and progressing while the rest of Somalia is suffering. However if you look at the growth in Mogadishu and Somalia in recent years, you can see that the country is improving for the better as there are more foreign companies coming to Somalia as well as many Somali diaspora returning back home and helping rebuild the country. At the end of the day, Somalia is one nation and Somaliland is only a region of Somalia. As you said yourself, there are no nations in the entire world that have recognised or even acknowledged Somaliland. Also it’s important to note the terror and the violence that the Somaliland regime (which is really the Isaac clan) is carrying out against other clans who refuse to accept their dictatorship. If you just search what is happening in the city of Laascanod, you will see the chaos and horror the Somaliland regime has unleashed against the innocent people of northern Somalia all in the name of reviving a colonial state.

You are biased. Kulaha somali never agreed on colonial borders. Nobody agreed, but all africa followed that border, and if somali doesn't want the border, why is there somali ethopia till this day and somali kenya. Like it or not, somaliland border exists till the day all africa change the border.
