THE AFTERMATH is set in postwar Germany in 1946. Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) arrives in the ruins of Hamburg in the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal.

After watching one scene from a film - a film I hadn't even heard of - I'm totally sold on it. This one clip sells the entire film. This segment - it's an excellent pick on the distributor's part. For one, you see the man expecting a "thank you" from the lady, she says nothing at all, and so - having nothing polite to say - *he* says nothing at all. A fine example of the phrase "Silence is golden".

Stefan was not a Nazi, but he did not overtly resist, either. The house is his form of resistance. Modernist furniture and art was considered "degenerate" and ownership was a state crime. In production notes it's commented that Kiera's character knows nothing and does not understand all the art and design, calling her a philistine. To her it's all an inconvenience, she'd be happier in a cottage with no Germans around, while Stefan, who is upper class professional, is working in a sheet metal plant while waiting for the de-Nazification courts to issue a professional permit. So his circumstances are oddly flipped as well. As an unskilled worker he now ranks below his own servants in status.

Her character was so annoying during the movie and at times, made it hard to feel sorry for her by the way she treats her husband.

Brits can be real pains in the butt. This Mrs is unbearable. (I suspect it's just a setup for falling hopelessly in love with that dashing German architect who has to explain Mies van Der Rohe to her.)

Those little "rituals" help to keep him sane after the death of their son. He has enormous responsibility in Germany at this moment, and she could have approached him in a gentler manner about mutually discussing how their son's death affected them.

The ending sucked for those who watch the movie they know what I'm talking about but those who didn't I'm not going to spoil it for you

I KNEW the script was going make her change her mind at the end! DAMNIT! Women are always fickle & change their minds in these stories. So the aftermath is they struggle to work things out! I just wanted her to be happy. I'd hoped that the girl would leave the cigarette case but when she didn't I knew the wife would return it! So all got wrapped up with a not so perfect bow at the end. Poor dad! Another clue was him saying to his daughter, "We have each other." Unfortunately they waited to the end to make one consistency flaw. She left her luggage! WTF? LOL!

Same old crap about females that believes I'm so pretty and everything in the world should revolve around them. The wife, the daughter moping, condescending, not good enough, unappreciative. All the scenes are stotic and "predictable". You just want an undetonated bomb to explode and end the film. Having a house, shelter, food, being waited on, cloths, I'm not happy! Me!

LOL! A bit harsh and unsympathetic to their motivations where both are having to suffer through the loss of the dearest people in their lives which does cause tension between immediate family members. It's a fact that often women cope different. I just wished she'd been happy running off with the German instead! Now she'll just remain miserable. LOL !
