I still remember how you commented on my Toronto video 8 years ago now and how much that mean't to me that someone else would appreciate a little video by a nobody. Thank you for being the same guy, through everything you've faced and for being authentic and vulnerable about it bro. It means a lot and God's got you 💪 we should meet up some time in the city and go shooting together 📸

loved this brother. I definitely deal with having an addictive personality. caffeine, the gym, health, creating... but alcohol is one of my weaknesses that really brings the worst out of me. tend to binge and go all out then feel anxious and questioning life for days. then workout, eat healthy, and the cycle continues. I've gone through multiple periods of complete sobriety and i've felt my best there physically and mentally. my creative work tends to be the best when I'm feeling like myself. luckily its not a daily thing with the alcohol but its just the repetitive cycle of feeling great then ruining it by bingeing one night. one cup is never enough.

Thank you so much! I can actually connect to this for like 100% Been quitting weed now for roughly a month. I’ve been a daily user ever since covid started. I still have serious mental issues besides of that, that I’m trying to fight with the help of my therapists, but there is one thing that really bothers me and i felt like sharing it in here… I have always been super passionate about creating videos. Starten with cod montages back in 2012. It all felt so easy. But when the weed and adolescence came, i always started feeling „guilty“ when being on my pc, when i thought I should be there with my friends and family. But for similar reasons as you mentioned, i really need this to explore and communicate my most emotional feelings etc Now even after quitting weed, i can find myself still stuck in very unhealthy routines and habits. Like i write down immense amounts of video editing ideas, i go out and film stuff with a friend. But when im on my pc, i always get myself distracted and wanna watch videos instead or literally do anything out of the 1million possibilities you could do on a pc… I know it often comes, because i also still feel like im not really a good creator and therefore i never get my videos finished cause „it’s not worth it anyway“ so everything that i really get finished are mostly 1 day projects. Cause whenever i open up a project on a nother day, i start hating it cause i only see the flaws etc whatever, your video is so important to me im so thankful, that you have shared it. I‘ll come back to this one many times

therapy can really help with letting things out. and in terms of your creative journey, in the beginning filmmaking is alot like working out. The more time away from creating the harder and more daunting it feels to come back to it.. you can get up in your head. Speaking from experience this is what also happened to me during the last few years. But trust me finishing a project, being done is better than being perfect. There's a sort of satisfaction in completing projects, and you shouldn't think of it not being worth it because of how many people view it, its worth it because each project is a small step toward progress in becoming better. You'll be able to look back on those videos and have something to tie to that moment in your life, which in a way is creating for yourself first. I was like this too, i think due to social media and screen time i lost alot of my attention span. What worked for me was again finding different creative outlets that allow you to practice holding your attention and can get you in a flow state. I practice the bass 30 minutes everyday, playing football allows me to stop thinking about things and reset, i try to read.. so when i come back to my pc i find my mind more empty and it easier to focus in on a single task. I also turn my phone off and plug my pc off the internet. I put timers for 25 minutes and then 10 minute break to watch a video, etc. I find myself being able to get alot more done when i break my day up rather than spend all my time on the pc. These are just suggestions though which have worked for me! Thank you for sharing your journey, and always remember everyones journey isn't the same, its not linear so dont be too hard on yourself in needing to figure it all out at once, be patient with yourself as you grow. Much love and wishing you well with your endeavors!

I don’t know you personally but I get the impression that you are the same person and never turned into something else because of your success. Im mostly doing Arabic teaching videos on my other channel so I it has been a long while since I’ve seen cinematic content. This one is so refreshing. This is amazing bro. Literally the same life we live. Smoked weed since 15 years old. 29 now, and I quit January and have been clean since. Same reason, letting life go by, knowing we have more potential within us, yet we would cave in and go the short term route. Love the vulnerability. Praying to the most high to remove those temptations and to keep harnessing our divine energy. Lets go!!

It’s been about 4 years now for me but I’ve watched and admired all that you did and how you had creative ppl with you to embark on this journey. It made me want that so I’m just commenting to let you know you have been one of the biggest inspirations in my creative journey and I pray you continue to push forward and continue to inspire us because your make ppl want to be great. You make us want to create and tell stories. Much love always to you always my brother and I pray our paths meet one day. But until then just know you have supporters that you don’t know. 💫

Very personnal video yet I'm sure everyone got the message. Congrats for being sober for a year man, that's absolutely amazing ! I have been watching your videos for years, and you're the one who got me into filmmaking actually (with your video in London back in the days). Started just like you, with video games (the channel I'm writting this comment with ahah), but it turned into an addiction, of always wanting to do better. I think a lot of creators are in this situation, facing solitude and using art to escape from everyday's problems. Glad you did this video, It shares an important message !

I still remember the shock I had when I first stumbled upon your Egypt video. I put a "god level cinematic guy" label on you. You work since then only enhances this impression I have on you. Then this video dropped. I enjoyed your amazing visual as usual, I had severe addiction problem myself so I relate a lot. Most of all, I enjoyed the last section of your video. There was no more flashy cuts or amazing footage, just one man in all honesty, sharing his journey. As much respect I have for your skills as a "cinematic god", I have even more respect for that. And appreciation. Thank you JR, keep going.

I've been wrestling with substances and spirituality and the relation between the two as I try to find what's best for me and this human condition. we're human, we all have been through things and are looking for ways to cope in some aspect. Its true what you say, when you are in certain patterns it becomes harder to recognize what it's doing to you. This is why i really wanted to make this video, not to tell people to live a certain way, but to just take a step back and evaluate their own life, so if they want to make a change in someway they don't feel like they are alone in it.

Been there done that. It’s interesting to see who’s still around after you make the changes that many people never will. Definitely relate to feeling way better after getting over the initial hump of stopping 💨. I think for many people…they get stuck in the loop of habits and never get out which is sad to see…and when you want to better your life, make changes etc…you really do need to do some serious internal reflection and separate / distance yourself from any negative influences.

It's good to hear you are doing good brother not the best. The path to self healing after dealing with the things happening in your life and jumping up to addiction and going on a different path but it is always the same story at the end of the day its you who is suffering. You all the best do well, hope to see ya someday and meet you in person and talk about the things we don't usually. But if its someone who you don't know might be fun for you to just talk it out. We are up all in our heads, felt lost for so long that i don't even know what are the designs I want to do anymore. We grew and we kill the kid in our dreams with our own hands not even realizing that is who we are. But who really decides who we are ?? I don't know what am i even saying now, all the best for your goals have a good day .
start before you know how.
