Balerion only ever fought one other dragon and that was the comparatively puny quicksilver. Balerion is the most powerful dragon in the history of Westeros, but sunfyre has the most impressive record imo I'm convinced if Sunfyre had lived for as long as Balerion,his eventual peak would have put even the Black Dread to shame, considering how powerful he already was at a much younger age

@@isabelbarranco7055 Sunfyre didnt do shit against Meleys and Moondancer was a really young Dragon and barely a challenge. Balerion ist the only known Dragon from Old Valyria and because of that by far bigger than all other known Dragons. Sunfyre would've never come along the Level of Balerion

I think it actually has to do with how the dragons grew up over the years. In GRRM's lore, he says that the size of the lair when the dragons grow will factor into how large they grow (or something to that effect). Arrax started in the dragon pit immediately and made his lair in the dragon pit. In contrast, Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion spent their life in the open skies, and little to no time in a den like area. Drogon is bigger than Rhaegal and Viserion because the latter two ended up being chained up for a few months before they were set free - in the show, it was Tyrion. In the books, I can't remember who. Meanwhile Drogon flew around and did as he pleased. It is entirely possible that Rhaegal and Viserion would have been able to catch up to Drogon in growth given time, but they obviously didn't get that chance. And who knows how they'll perish in the books. But I do think all three of them will in one way or another, I'll be surprised if they don't.

They probably hatched within a year of Jace and Luc. Not sure exactly how long it takes for dragon eggs to hatched after being placed in the cradle, but not usually very long.

Alicent's comment doesn't make any sense though. Dragons can bond with riders with Targaryen blood which Rhaenyra's children have. Same with Laenor. Dragons don't care if their riders were the product of a lawful relationship or an affair :))

It’s because they kept the dragon’s housed in the dragon pit. If they had allowed the dragons to run free and hunt on their own they would definitely be bigger. That’s why some are bigger than some of the others. Like in GOT drogon was bigger than viserion and Rhagal because he wasn’t chained up

@@chefr.l.e742 the dragon pit wasn't a thing until Maegor the cruel and wasn't completed until 55AC under the rule of Jaehaerys (the king before Viserys). The dragons we're speaking of are much much older then that.

This quote from Dany's sums it all, since Targaryen dragons spent most of their life in a dragonpit: "This place was the beginning of the end for my family. A dragon is not a slave. They were terrifying, extraordinary. They filled people with wonder and awe, and we locked them in here. They wasted away. They grew small and we grew small as well. We weren’t extraordinary without them. We were just like everyone else.” HotD dragons were most of their life locked away, hidden, so they'd not scare people of KL. They grew small and slow. That's why Dany's dragons didn't as they were free most of their life, so they grew fast. That's why Rhaegal and Viserion were smaller and slower than Drogon as they were chained up in Meereen.They were not that skilled as Drogon was in the world, hunting and maneuvering around, so they were slower and perhaps - that's why they were easier to kill in the end.

@@dominikakrajcovicova6101 Certain Dragons being smaller due to the dragon Pitt is true, but Craxes Meleys are both older then the Pitt by 10+ years or more and danny dragon grew as large as they did in as much time or less then. Secondly Drogon has always been naturally bigger then Viserion or Rhaegal. When Daenerys made the "deal" with the slavers of Astapor for the Unsullied Army they requested the "biggest dragon" and Drogon was who she brought and then he proceeded to burn them alive.

So, in no way Meleys is longer than Caraxes (by birth year and by what we've seen in the show)

@@woudanborson2778 From what we have seen clearly Caraxes is larger than her, Meleys in the throne room approaching the greens you could see from the size of her head and her fitting through the throne room door whereas Caraxes moved a large ship by simply flying next to it and not being able to get into a large cave entrance in the stepstones.

Yeah dreamfyre is older since her first rider was jaehaerys older sister rhaena, she was the one who started the tradition of cradle-eggs, rhaena placed the eggs of vermithor and silverwing's eggs on her younger siblings, also dreamfyre was describe to be a small dragon but because of her being kept at the dragon pits it drastically made her growth slower but that still doesn't explain why vermithor looking so old

Dreamfyre maybe about the size of caraxes but she's definitely small for her age because she spent most of her entire life in the dragonpit laying eggs only. None of her riders were warriors.

yeah, they made vhagar huge in the show. In books, she is huge as well, but arrax is supposed to be like 5-6 times smaller.

Firstly because Vermithor is a male (they’re generally bigger than females) and secondly Dreamfyre has spent half her life in the Dragon Pit. Dragons never stop growing, but only do so according to the size of their surroundings. She’s basically been caged. Vermithor has spent at least half his life free following the death of King Jaehaerys, so has had open lands to grow (free dragons are always larger). I’ve read the books and the show is pretty accurate with the dragon sizes, apart from Vhagar is perhaps a bit too big, but she is about 180 years old. You have to think that Vermithor is the 2nd largest and is 100. Caraxes is only 50!

Because Dany let her dragons be free and let them fly around her all the time. Dragons grows faster if they are without chains. Except that one time when Drogon burned a child. she chained her other dragons. but most of the time she let her dragons be free.

Don’t be fooled mate. Caraxes is a Wyrm (almost snake like as in the book). You also need to remember that he’s deformed, so while he can’t roar properly and has a small body, he has wings on his back legs which makes him very fast (only Meleys is quicker) and a long neck which gives him great reflexes. He’s also highly intelligent (perhaps the smartest of all the dragons) and by far the most aggressive because he has to compensate for his deformity. The author has said that the 2 most powerful dragons are Vhagar and Caraxes. In the book Caraxes was always my favorite because of how unique he looks and he’s also a bit of a nutter.
