The Elixir is a versatile aircraft, designed for pilot training and travel or time building. Designed and manufactured in France. Elixir is a two-seat light aircraft that conforms to the European Aviation Safety Agency Certification Standard CS-23.
The aircraft was first announced at the Paris Air Show 2015 in the form of 2 models. The prototype was publicly unveiled during the 2017 edition of the airshow.
Why 2 seats instead of 4? Well Statistics have shown that today, most aircraft are occupied 80% of the time by only one or two people. High acquisition cost, more complex and expensive maintenance, higher fuel consumption. With the current use of aircraft in mind, a two-seater makes more sense.
Elixir Aircraft Specs.
- Rotax 912 (100 hp engine)
- Range: N/A
- Climb rate: N/A
- Speed: 120 kts
- Fuel: 3.5 gph

I reallly want to see what an a like this can do with a radically simplified engine like the one that Liquid Piston is developing. LP doesn't seem to be pursuing aircraft other than UAVs currently, but they've got the best power/weight ratio ever achieved by any internal combustion engine.

It's an interesting premise to single piece mold the entire fuselage to make manufacture radically easier however the premise then falls apart when they land at a price higher than any other LSA plane. There is a sharp disconnect there. That concept doesn't fly. Puns intended :) 240k€ for the 912 and 300+ for 915. German made FK14 polaris is around 138k, also has ballistic chute and cruise at 134kts with the 912 and a 915 version coming. The Risen 915 can cruise at 212kts@9500 and even go to 250kts if you feel like using oxygen. That's just vastly superior at or below the Elixir price. The price is a little too comfortable for a canoe with wings and a briggs and stratton.

There's something to be said for the avionics package though, and the fact that this is part 23, not LSA
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 2 жыл бұрын
@@srqamt but part 23 shouldn't really cost anything on such a plane, I figure it's more an attempt to justify the very high price. And what does it really give you? technically the passenger can be a paying customer? but how big is that usage and again, shouldn't cost anything. It's a one time cost for them and for this small plane with modest part count, possibly a modest expense. Didn't involve FAA if it's just a transferred approval from EASA. And the 100 grand difference between 912 and 915 version. Avionics probably can't explain that.
@srqamt
@srqamt 2 жыл бұрын
@@DanFrederiksen the certificate and the process is very expensive, and flight schools could use the hell out of this thing, no? Imagine buying a fleet of these and cutting your maintenance and fuel costs in half, versus scouring the internet for warriors and skyhawks with less than 6000 hours on the airframe. The avionics alone in the 915 in worth 150k installed.
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 2 жыл бұрын
@@srqamt I don't know if normal LSAs can also be used for flight schools, they can be used to build hours for PPL afaik. but again it would be a technicality they use to justify the high price, not real merit. And it is especially poignant given the construction method is touted to be cost effective. they are the enemy of progress this way. While claiming progress.

Sinking GA for the average pilot through ridiculous pricing,expensive construct methods and materials,aviation has outpriced itself through over regulation and playing the safety tune to extract even more costs,growing up between YSBK and YSRI and learning to fly at the now gone YSFS aviation was alive in my area with pilots being very active throughout the 80,s 90,s. I live at same residence today being Saturday,used to be alive with aviation from transports and visiting fighters to Richmond to the abundance of GA out of Schofields and Bankstown.Have been relaxing this morning watching mojo and other vids for around 4hrs and haven’t heard a single aircraft military or GA,aviation GA anyway in Sydney is dead I can hear the silence.

@@rossiFandallas Your correct, just took a look. Not a surprise the aviation community is getting smaller and smaller and older and older. Only old money can afford these planes. You'd think someone would manufacture an affordable non-experimental plane for the average Joe... but I guess that's not where the money is at. 300K-400K Euros? $322-$429 US dollars. Er... No. Nice looking, but in the same category, I'd go with a (basic) Van's RV-12 for $125K.
@PhilipFly11
@PhilipFly11 2 жыл бұрын
The Vans RV-12 and the Elixir are not remotely equivalent aircraft. The Vans RV-12 is 'Experimental' and you have to spend a lot of your time riveting bits of aluminium together yourself. The Elixir is a 'Certified' aircraft and one of a very small handful to be certified this century because certification takes a lot of time and expense. The Elixir 912 started with a price of €150,000, with the Rotax 912iS but the cost of certification increased that to €235,000 and has a cruise speed of 125 KTAS, is intended for clubs and training. The Elixir 915 has the turbocharged 915iS engine, has a cruise speed of 160 KTAS, and is intended for touring ie getting 2 people from A to B. That speed is comparable to a Beechcraft Bonanza, but burning half the fuel, and it is in a whole different performance category compared to the Vans RV-12 which only has a 100 KTAS cruise. If you compare the Elixir to a Diamond DA-40, which costs about $500,000 new, the Elixir is lighter, faster, more efficient and cheaper. If you compare the Elixir to a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, which costs up to $438,000 new, the Elixir is much lighter, much faster, much more efficient and probably will be a little bit cheaper. The better comparison is with other European UltraLight aircraft like the SEA Risen, BlackWing and VL3 which have retractable gear, much more performance of 200 plus KTAS and a lower price than the Elixir 915 and less than half the purchase price and running cost of a Cirrus SR22. The unique selling point of the Elixir is the one-shot manufacturing process that allows an entire wing to be moulded in one piece without separate spars and ribs, which should have resulted in a lower cost, however, disappointingly, this does not appear to be reflected in the selling price.
@EJWash57
@EJWash57 2 жыл бұрын
@@PhilipFly11 Sorry, but all those words just don't add up to the additional $200K over the RV-12. And, you compared a 2-seater to three 4-seat aircraft?
@EJWash57
@EJWash57 2 жыл бұрын
Addition: Van's offers the RV-12 either ready to fly (factory built) at that $129K price tag, or as a kit. So no, you're wrong, you do not have to spend the time building the airplane yourself.
