Reading and commenting on Imam Al-Ghazali's Kimiya, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf makes simple and beautiful what it means to know Allah, that purpose of our creation and the epitome of happiness. From the colorful pages of the Islamic past emerges a figure at the turn of the 12th century peerless in his scholarship and ingenuity. He was a man who, after enduring a solemn journey to spiritual transformation, would be honored to this day as the man who revived Islam by restoring the centrality of the spiritual dimension as the focus of the Islamic sciences. His name was Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali.
TRANSCRIPT TEXT: shaykhhamza.com/transcript/alc...
In this series, Hamza Yusuf, joined by partisans of the 2006 Summer Rihla in Medina celebrates this scholar's remarkable life and indispensable contributions to the Islamic disciplines through a study of his compendium, The Alchemy of Happiness, an abridgment of his canon Revival of the Religious Sciences. Reading and commenting on this treatise, Yusuf makes simple and beautiful what it means to know Allah, that purpose of our creation and epitome of happiness which Al-Ghazali realized in himself and keenly wanted to impart.
What is presented to the listener in this set is no less than what its title promises to deliver: the spiritual alchemy by which seekers may purify and transform their hearts until they attain the heights intended for them from knowledge of self and the Divine.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The word of wisdom is the lost property of the believer. Wherever he finds it, he is most deserving of it.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2687; Classified Hasan (fair) by Imam Al-Suyuti)
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah does not withhold knowledge by snatching it away from his servants, but rather he withholds knowledge by taking the souls scholars, until no scholar remains and people follow ignorant leaders. They are asked and they issue judgments without knowledge. Thus, they are astray and lead others astray.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 100, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2673; Classified Muttafaqun Alayhi (authenticity agreed upon) by Imam Al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim)
May Allah reward our scholars and the deenintensive team immensely here and in the hereafter!
Abu Mas’ud reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever guides someone to goodness will have a reward like one who did it.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1893; Classified Sahih (authentic) according to Imam Muslim)

The Alchemy of Happiness | Imam al-Ghazali Transcript Text of Shaykh Dr. Hamza Yusuf's Translation & Commentary ihsaan.wordpress.com/2021/12/07/alchemy/ Excerpt: "This is why the Prophet salallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said true dreams are 1/46th of prophecy. 1/46th of prophecy and true dreams are the access that the average human being has to prophecy and that is why people will see dreams come true. They will have meanings revealed to them in dreams and these are related to prophecy. That is what that hadith means so it is a door to perception, dreams. It is an opening to the malakut which is what in the Gospel is called the Kingdom of the heavens and there are many references to this in the Gospel. Isa alayhi sallam talked about the Kingdom of the heavens being revealed to his disciples. So those things that are from the unseen world. It is like a light that is revealing things and perhaps this understanding and illumination of these things is stipulated upon some knowledge of the interpretation of dreams in other words he will not be able to understand what they mean unless he has access to interpretation of dreams and not everyone has that knowledge. That knowledge is limited to certain people. Abu Bakr had knowledge of the meanings of dreams so the Prophet salallahu 'alayhi wa sallam himself had to ask Abu Bakr what dreams meant because that was one of the knowledges that Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu had so interpretation of dreams is not a knowledge that everybody has. Some people have it. It is haram..."

Whenever Hamza Yusuf summarizes or explains biographies or books, he provides additional context that really assembles my knowledge like a puzzle and opens up new perspectives. These first 40 minutes before he goes into the text are already such a guidance and blessing: 11:57 - Intellectual Brilliance and missing awarness of your inward state !!! 24:50 - Split between exoteric religion and esoteric religion (laws&ritualization - inward focucs) 27:36 - Al Ghazli´s crisis of not practizing what he teaches/preaches 37:42 >>> Ihya: Spiritual Maqasid of Fiqh = "This is the way you should teach it! Do not turn this religion into a formalistic religion. Muslims should know why they do things." greetings from Germany/Bavaria.

Why there is so much emphesises on Islamic tradition, on perfect man, everything is perfect. If that is so, there is no need for other religions, other philosophies, other love of God like Christianity. Only Mohamned, a person of tradition from and co-founder of Islam. Why there is no interpretation that yes, these rules are universal? Yes, I know Chistianity and it tells the same story as Islam.The Alchemy of Love is about love and love is beyond all religions, it makes us better people. For God it does not matter Islam or Christianity. God loves us all.
@yahya2925
@yahya2925 3 жыл бұрын
Islam is the "religion of the Creator" that is has always been followed by all of creation. Non-Muslims aren't Muslims in intellectual belief, but they are simply going through the motions as to what Allab described them doing and will fulfill what He said will happen to them in the hereafter. We have the concept of "fitrah" that we were all born with a primitive "knowing" of The Higher Being. If someone for instance is drinking alcohol, they are doing God's will. The only difference is that they are inflicting His will of punishment upon themselves. Islam simply means to submit to this core Reality, which we all were as babies, and to use the intellect to follow God's rules which all are in line to preserve this core fitrah. Its the way of nature.
@yahya2925
@yahya2925 3 жыл бұрын
So sure, other teachers who don't outwardly say "I'm muslim" can have truth too! Just in different words sometimes. Islam is like the juice squeezes from the apple until the flesh only is left and even then some extra juice from God as a mercy such as The Qur'an and Islam as a intellectual religion and outward and inward way of life. It's the complete way of life.

If you observe all other religions focus on the same thing love, gratitude, humility, truthfulness, but their way of achieving it is different & over thousands of years it gets distorted from its original form. In islam we achieve it through oneness of Allah swt, that is the core concept. la ilaha illallah la hawla wala quwwata

Hello Tomek, I am not sure whether your question about "perfection" was fully answered. The other replies were great in trying to explain the Islamic point of view on the "perfection of religion". But you also asked why there's emphasis on "perfect man"; i.e., the Prophet Mohammed (may God's peace and mercy be upon him). Let me first acknowledge you: Yes, any average Muslim, born or convert, will most probably view the Prophet as the "prefect" man and have this bias, and there would be really multiple ways of trying to explain to you why they think that. But I'll try to stick to the simplest of reasons: I am Muslim today because Mohammed (pbuh), as the last Messenger & Prophet, received God's revelation (Qur'an/Quran/Koran), had to endure to deliver it faithfully, for me to be able to read and learn it today. That's part of the ABCs of my faith/belief. And since I view the Qur'an to be the finality of books and greatest manual for spiritual salvation, I automatically cannot think but very highly of Prophet Mohammed (pbuh). Not prefect for sure, but as close to perfect as humanly possible, let's call it the highest possible human caliber available around that time to receive and deliver a divine message of such weight. But so was Prophet/Messenger Jesus (pbuh) at his time, Prophet/Messenger Moses (pbuh) at his time, and before them Abraham (pbuh) --- to mention a few. So it's more or less a matter of finality --- completion --- conclusion. And from that point of view, a Muslim views last as best. Again, we can talk about it from so many different angles, but I wanted to give you the generic Muslim perspective in the most straightforward way without referencing any religious or scholarly texts. Take care. Salam (Arabic "Shalom" = Peace)

The irony is that Shaykh Hamza Yusuf obviously enjoyed the arrogant side of Al Ghazali's life more than his later stages. He will do better without his own arrogance and constant judgements. I have found some brilliant sources on Al Ghazali and unfortunately, this video was not one of them.
