Born raised here in Alaska here on the Kuskokwim River. Ive handloaded for 25 years exclusively with the 180 Nosler Partition loaded to accuracy specs customized to my ironsighted Rem700 30'06. I get as close as I can get and wait for a clean headshot on Bull Moose drops them where they stand. Im currently maintaining a 0 follow up streak with my 30'06 chambered rifle👍👍 Great video sir I enjoyed listening to your lecture.

30-06 was a winner at the turn of the 20th century and is still a winner at the turn of the 21st century.

Just after the war(WWII) Uncle Sam was divesting itself of Springfield 1903-A3 rifles through the CMP(Civilian Marksman Program). NRA members could buy them for $5.00. My Dad bought one, had it sporterized(turned down barrel & bolt, trigger job) in Missoula, Montana, where he was going to school on the GI Bill, gave it a beautiful Bishop stock and a deluxe Redfield peep sight with a very fine brass bead. He used it to hunt elk. 40 some years later Dad gave it to me. Among my many rifles chambered in .270 WIN, .308 WIN, and .30-06, it remains one of the most accurate in my arsenal. The only game I've taken past 150 yards was a mule deer doe at ~425 yards on our homesteaded ranch in Stillwater County, Montana. I hung my Carhartt jacket over a wooden fence post to protect the stock, rested the rifle there, estimated my bullet drop and let off a round. I could see by the dust I was right on elevation but had drifted right(East) about 2' due to wind. The muley raised her head but otherwise didn't spook, looked around a bit, then resumed grazing. The next round dropped her on the spot hitting her just behind the shoulder. I couldn't believe the accuracy and my good luck as I'd never fiddled with his original 100 yard sight-in. Oddly enough I was using the ammo he'd given me, Winchester-Western 180gr. Silver Tips, the same ammo pictured on your top shelf in the yellow box. When I got down to his last full box I started reloading my own and to this day it remains in my .30-06 ammo can unopened. Thanks Dad, for teaching me trapping, for taking me hunting, for the rifle, and for making me a NRA member at 11 years old. 50+ years later I've been a Life Member for 3 decades and made my son(and hunting partner) a Life Member too.

GunBlue490 is the living 30/06. Nothing amazing , nothing below par, consistent as time itself and will always be my first choice for any situation. Love this guy.

I got my 30-06 from my father-in-law. It’s a repurposed military receiver mated to a Remington barrel and custom oil-finished wood stock. I put a Cabela’s guide series scope on it and took a nice mulie in Montana at about 400-450 yards. First round was a little low and right, 2nd round dropped him like a sack of potatoes. Best all round rifle ever

I have been fortunate to collect a lot of rifles in my years of shooting, hunting, collecting. If I had to choose just ONE centerfire rifle to keep, it would be one of my .30-06 rifles. Best all around cartridge for hunting about 95% of the world's game, excellent for self defense and even most target shooting applications. For hunting, load it with a good 180 gr. bullet and never look back. Give a man a .30-06 and there are no problems he can't fix.

I grew up around the 30-06 caliber being the standard in our household. My father hunted with my grandfather's 30-06, which I hope to inherit someday. My mother's dad also hunted with a 30-06 Springfield 1903 A3 that had been modified by adding a scope. So it was that when I purchased my own hunting rifle it was a Remington 700 BDL chambered in 30-06. We have successfully used them to bring home White Tail and Mule deer, Elk and Black Bear here in North Idaho.

If I'm being honest, I can watch a video of GunBlue opening up boxes of 30-06 and smiling as Souza marches start playing all day long. Every time I open 30-06 I am going to hear Stars and Stripes Forever now lol

I inherited my late Father's Remington 700 BDL 30-06 ( that he bought in '67 , the year I was born ) , and it is now the only rifle that I use for big game hunting . It still has the original Redfield 2×7 scope that he installed on it . I still use his pet load of 48.5 grains of 4064 with a Sierra 180 grain pro hunter bullet . over gunned for Whitetail , absolutely, but it's all I'll ever use from now on for sentimental reasons. I used to use the same .243 BDL that he bought for me , but now that's in the safe for my Grandchild. love your channel . it's like having Jack O'Connor or Grits Gresham , or my true favorite Don Zutz to watch and learn from ! I am an older veteran and a 3006 lover.I am also a lover of being able to get on the internet and glean the knowledge from others such as yourself.Watched many of your videos,thanx for your time and knowledge.I too find myself passing on so much to my kids and grandkids,if nothing else they will have me in their memories when i go.

You may recall, a couple of years ago, when ammunition was really, really hard to find. Nearly all of the shelves were bare except, there was usually a few lone boxes of 30-06. That is just another reason why I bought my Ruger American in 30-06.

When I was 12 my older brother took me hunting. My very first experience with ANY firearm. I'll never forget THE KICK, yeah THAT ONE. I first shot the 30-30.....no problem. But the 30-06 nearly put me back on MY ARSE. Cold as hell that winter and we never even saw one deer (I think they had more sense than we did......just too cold to be out ). You mentioned in your other vids that you were Army. So was my brother. He drove an ammo truck in Vietnam.....amazing that he made it back.....only to pass on at 63. I'll never forget that winter......and THE KICK....and the look on my brother's face as he watched me GETTIN' KICKED !!!

The 30-06 is the best all around hunter/killing round, you get all that power without having to go to a magnum with all the extra recoil to just push a bullet 100fps faster at 350 yards. With the 30-06 all you have to do is just change bullet weight and type based on what your shooting/hunting. The 30-06 was designed right the 1st time way back in 1906 in which people still use it to this very day with the ammo still flying off the shelf.

The intro makes me want a 1903 Springfield even more than I already do. One of my favorite scenes in Sgt. York is the rifle range scene because of the rifle and the round (even though that’s not the rifle the actual York used in France). My dad got me a .30-06 Springfield Remington 700 for Christmas when I was 18. Felt a little intimidated my the 185 gr Winchester hot heavy loads at first, but I have grown to love it.

Even here in Australia 30-06 is used more than any other round ... most of our older military guns were 303 British but we hardly use it it’s 30-06 for me anyday .... you can keep them 308s

I like the 30-06 a lot. A 220 gr bullet at 2200 fps is perfect for hunting in the bush areas of South Africa, but on the other end of the spectrum a 165 gr bullet can be pushed fast enough to flatten the trajectory to a point where longer shots in more open areas are possible. Add a pachmayr decelerator and the caliber is comfortable enough to shoot, but certainly more noticable than the 308. Great video man.

I own a 30-06 with a K98 Mauser action. I have tried to count how many deer I have taken with this gun, and I always get lost in the numbers and the memories. It has never failed me when I did my part. It really shines when loaded with Hornady 165 grain interlock bullets. I can reduce the loads to 308 velocities, and it does quite well without much meat destruction. It actually does better with 165 grain bullets than 150's, because the velocity is not as high, therefore the meat around the bullet wound is hardly bruised at all. Keeping my shots behind the shoulder and low enough to not affect the backstrip is the key to a cleaner harvest. If I were to hunt elk with it, I would try to hold a bit lower just behind the shoulder using full house loads. This would leave a better blood trail because the chest cavity would fill with blood faster, and the major arteries going to the heart are located here. I would have no problem with shots out to 300 yards at any big game animal hit solidly in this target area with the 30-06, using 165 grain bullets.

Thanks for the hilarious intro for the 30-06. Thanks as well for the history lesson. My first personal rifle, the Winchester Model 70 was chambered in this cartridge. During US Navy boot camp, it's the cartridge we fired at the range in M1 Garand rifles as well as BAR autos. For the last few years I've used other sporting rounds but now have a 30-06 on order. If ever in brown bear country, I'd be comforted knowing I had it with me. I failed to mention that when my ship patrolled off the coast of South Vietnam in the mid-1960s the rifles in our armory were primarily M1 rifles.

I love the good old 30-06 I often watched my Dad cut the heads off of Ruffed Grouse with his old BAR hunting rifle and I usta often hunt Ground hogs with my old model 3000 Mauser with my 150 grain hand loads until I got out of the U.S. Army and bought a 22-250 for varmint hunting.that old 30-06 has brought alot of Deer meat home ,and I still hunt with it.I have several hunting rifles now ,but I still love hunting with my old 30-06 and I always will.I love my 270 and 243 and my 25-06 but I know if I do my part the 30-06 will do a great job .once a guy worked with asked me what kind of rifle I Deer hunted with and when I told him a 30-06 he just snorted and said that it was the nearest nothing gun he had ever seen. when I asked him why he thought that he said he had watched his friend shoot a Deer with one and he said the Deer just humped up and ran off, and I think he got a little mad when I laughed and told him that it diddn't matter what you shot Deer with ,if you gut shot them they would all do the same thing .

Zastava M-70 in 30-06 is my "first love" but as a very young hunter i find that she kick a lot for me especially in summer season when i wear t-shirt and i was a disappointed until i change plastic recoil pad with new orange Pachmayr and difference is unbelievable it now kick slightly harder then .243 and for the next 20 years 180 grs PPU and 220 grs Remington's demonstrate great efficiency against wild boars that im not planing to switch to any other caliber... never... I always wanted a .30-06 since I was knee high to a grasshopper. When I bought my brothers their "gift of a lifetime" Winchester Model 70s (and one for me!) you're darned tootin' they were in the venerable .30-06 with Leupold scopes. The choice was like hitting the broad side of a barn, can't miss!

I am of your opinion, the good old 30-06 will likely be around as long as any other current commercial produced round. The 30-06's key to success is in the versatility it offers, like you said, "mice to moose"! I loved the music, a perfect match. 1 of my deceased brothers loved the 30-06. This is the main reason on why I finally got one a few years ago. Not sure if its the best but its for sure one of the best and its a great and fun caliber to shoot, and probably to hunt with.

Good video. The 30 06 is an all American cartridge.

Pretty much every bullet diameter that they could put in a 30/06 case they did it. My personal favorite is the .280 Rem. I love how the 7mm bullet performs. As far as the 30/06 it's personal. I have my Grandpa's Sporterised Springfield. Every year me and Grandpa's gun goes hunting. It's like hunting with him. Now I'm a Grandpa and understand how much it means to hunt with my Grandkids.

I have a sporterized Remington 1917. I use it as my primary deer rifle for the last 5 years. Drops em every time.

I'll have you know I took my 30-06 to the range the other day and I only cried after the 3rd shot.

I use my 3006 for everything from ground hogs to bear in love my remmington 783 with a vortex 3x9x40 on it longest shot I made was 400 yards and it did the job on ground hogs

Stars And Stripes Forever is appropriate for .30-06 Springfield. It is 100% AMERICAN with hair on its balls. I served with the M1 Garand in the Army. This is the first video where someone pronounced "Garand" correctly, the way those of us who carried it pronounced it.

4 years old and I just got around to watching this. The intro was great as was the rest. The 30-06 is truly one of the greatest rounds ever developed and I love them. The .308 is a good cartridge but for the biggest North American game I think the '06 has everything else beaten. Especially for the hunter who can't afford to buy a new gun for every game animal he intends to hunt. I always like to hear you talk about how relative velocity is in hunting cartridges. Some loaders like to squeeze as much velocity out of a bullet as possible but it really doesn't make that great a difference at ethical ranges. Thanks for this video on a truly great cartridge Cap.

If an american hunter just wanted one hunting rifle, there are some good cartridge choices available, the 30 06 being one of them.

A little side note, the 7.62x54r is also over one hundred years old. It has taken and continues to take all game of northern Eurasia which is almost a mirror image to N. American wildlife. Hunting with a 30-06 while uncommon was considered hunting with a magnum. Great video and great point on the 140gr in the .280 although quite frankly an a huge 7-08 fan.

I have a couple of 280AI. Probably my favorite cartridge for hunting up in the Texas panhandle. For down in the hill country where we rarely need more than 150 yards, there are a lot of cartridges like the 3030, 708, 6.5 grendel etc...

Excellent talk, have owned quite a few different caliber rifles but never a 30-06 , mostly because it was so popular. But if I could only have one rifle it would probably be a 30-06 or 280 Rem.

Since my youth, the only center fire rifle I had ever owned was a Marlin 336 chambered in 30-30. Due to sad circumstances I sold it about 15 years ago and hadn't been hunting since. This past year I was gifted (by my FIL) his old hunting rifle. A war production (Oct 1942) Remington A3-03. He purchased the rifle and had it "sporterized" when he got out of the service in 1963. Because I consider that rifle to be a bit of an heirloom I was hesitant to take it into the field. This spring I purchased a Remington 770 chambered in 7mm-08. Although there is no doubt that the 30-06 is one of the greatest all around cartridges ever devised, I think for white tailed deer here in eastern Nebraska the mild little 7-08 is the cats meow. Prior to watching your video series I was debating on what my next rifle purchase should be. Now I'm convinced it will be a 270 Winchester and Dads beautiful, old -06 will remain retired. I actually have frequent dreams with John Philip Souza music played by the Marine Band during Change of Command and other ceremonies on the parade deck. 24 years in the Marine Corps, things like that will never leave my soul. I know the history and military weapons using the 30-06 and have fired a couple of Garrands, really enjoyed it. And in the Corps I of course used 5.56 NATO and 7.62X51 NATO. Now that I'm retired I selected just one rifle, an M1A chambered in 7.62X51/308, and just one pistol, a Ruger KP90 in 45 ACP. Figured this would be the best balance all around.
