42 years ago.. Berlin Airlift, RFK Stadium Washington DC.. Nobody knew who the Allman Bros. were.. We were there for Grand Funk Railroad.. Coming out, they ripped into Statesboro Blues, the whole stadium got up, shaking the place to the foundation! From there they went to Miami.. Eric Clapton was in the front row at their show, went back stage, invited them to the "Layla" sessions.. The rest is history.. We miss you brother...

@@twiztidlife66 : JW was a huge influence on me as a guitar player. Very different styles, Duane and Johnny. Both influenced by Elmore James of course. Johnny used a thumb pick ( because Chet Atkins did) and a metal slide because Johnny said it was "nastier', Duane used a glass coriciden bottle and because it is glass it is much mellower and sweet. Johnny was also a lightning fast standard electric guitar player, much more so than Duane, however Duane's 'voicing' was superb, and in Statesboro blues, you can hear Duane use the 'question answer technique' which is in this case, the vocalist singing something and the slide guitar answers the phrase, so Duane's 'voicing' was sublime . Glad I grew up when I did... Johnny and Duane were certainly the best slide guitar players of their time, and indelible in music history. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r8mchc2h2b3Qh2w.html

Ever see em in Grant Park or Macon? I was teenager in Columbus GA...saw them a few times. Duane's secret , so I I've read, was that he tried to make his guitar "slide through notes like a harmonica." That and he taught himself slide while using a pill bottle from the drugstore. Greg brought him some medicine cause he was ailin. Then as luck would have it when I went in the Navy, I got stationed at Mayport FL and got to see some early Skynyrd. Mix in some Hank Jr. and you have a hell of a trifecta!

Robert..I too had the honor of seeing them as well. It was in Dec. of 1969 just after the release of their first album, which hadn't been favorably accepted by a lot of ignorant folk, except for Rolling Stone magazine. The ticket to the show was my birthday present. The show was at a small auditorium in Georgetown, Ky. When we arrived at the one and only door , there was no one there to even take our tickets!. We walked to the front row, which was maybe 4 feet from this small stage and sat down in these wooden chairs. They walked on stage and proceeded to tear it slap down with their unmistakable sound! They played as if they were playing to hundreds of people, though there were only MAYBE 75 people there!!! After playing Trouble No More and Don't Want You No More and on and on for at least a couple of hours, they took a break, walked to the back of that little stage and sat down on the floor to partake of drink and weed, just as we were. No one around who objected. After a few minutes, they came back up front and played for another hour. Un- believable evening, so incredible I recall it as if it were yesterday! We watched them leave that snowy night in the back of a station wagon. The next year, they were playing at Fillmore East and were finally beginning to get the recognition they so deserved. The following year, Duane was gone. The year after that, Berry was gone....in the same way and in almost the same location. Tragic times.. That first album that was so ignored in 1969, was remixed, re released in 1973 I think, and sold over 500,000 copies. And to think, only 4 years earlier, I experienced The Allman Brothers...Gregg, Duane, Dickie, Berry and Butch.... live.... on a small stage in Georgetown, Ky!! Once in a lifetime experience and best birthday present EVER!!!

Wake up momma, turn your lamp down low; Wake up momma, turn your lamp down low. You got no nerve baby, to turn Uncle John from your door. I woke up this morning, I had them Statesboro Blues, I woke up this morning, had them Statesboro Blues. Well, I looked over in the corner, and Grandpa seemed to have them too. Well my momma died and left me, My poppa died and left me, I ain't good looking baby, But I'm somewhat sweet and kind. I'm goin' to the country, baby do you wanna go? But if you can't make it baby, your sister Lucille said she wanna go. (and I sure will take her). I love that woman, better than any woman I've ever seen; Well, I love that woman, better than any woman I've ever seen. Well, now, she treat me like a king, yeah, yeah, yeah, And she look like a dog gone queen. Wake up momma, turn your lamp down low. Wake up momma, turn your lamp down low. You got no nerve babe, to turn Uncle John from your door.

I first saw the ABB in 1973. The Spectrum in Philadelphia. Since then I have seen them 35 times and i am 64. From philly to Macon, Louisville to LA. I have their entire discography. 1971 Fillmore East fantastic. Elizabeth Reed anytime us fantastic. I play guitar and thanks to KZfaq, ive almost got Duanes lead down . Such a thrill to get just 1 note right. May i suggest 1971 at Stonybrook 1 month before Duane died. Best Blue sky ever.! Also 7-19-79 Merriweather Post Pavillion Columbia,MD. Best Oneway out of all time. Just my opinion. Btw if you have not been to Macon Ga. And you love these guys, it's the most rewarding experience in your life. I promise.

with all the presets nowadays I can say with deep sadness there will never be any band that can beat the real ones, the ones that slept with their instruments, the musicians not showmen, just plain old great blues rock, rock rock ....sad but we will always have these...sorry waxing nostalgic remembering the accident back then...I cried like a girl..well I was a girl but you know what I mean

I'm 55 and the Allman Brothers have been part of my musical life since my early teen years. So unique and real these guys were firmly anchored in music history and never had to prove anything to anybody. Pure Naturals who bring music to life and deserve the respect of any Blues guitarists.

@kevinlcpc8 жыл бұрын
Duane was the 'natural', those calling him a slide guitarist is a sin. This was by far the greatest overall rock and blues guitarist that ever lived. Dickie supported him when he played, but he was just good where Duane was a genius.
@robertkaye54348 жыл бұрын
What about Jeff Beck? I hate these historic absolutes! Duane was brilliant in his day. But that doesn't mean there aren't others that have followed and have now surpassed him. That's like saying ancient Gregorian chants was the best music ever created. Music/musicianship evolves.
@antoniodias47188 жыл бұрын
and what about Rory Gallagher!!!!?? Never permitted commercial music in his career!!! Jeff Beck cannot say the same........Rory was a true rock legend!!A great guitar hero!! a great (non) rock star!!!!!!!
@kevinlcpc8 жыл бұрын
Saw Jeff Beck with Rod Stewart. Also saw him on his own. He was good, almost as good as say Dave Mason. Clapton was at times very good, but then he'd get into the slow-hand act. The other Yardbirds guitarist, Page, was like Hendrix, noise. He was surrounded by pretty good musicians, except Plant. A little of the music was tolerable. Like Townsend, he surrounded himself with outstanding musicians like Entwistle and Moon, but then a mediocre singer like Daltry. I like all of these people for their studio recordings, but then I liked the Rolling Stones and the Beatles studio stuff too. Live they stunk until they add supportive musicians. Moon, Entwistle, Bonham, etc. made each concert, except Hendrix worth attending. It's good to be old, my memory is back to when I went to concert almost every weekend and saw some great ones like the original ABB with Duane who was still the best. Just don't do the brown acid, but then it's your own trip man!
