My father took me at 7, somewhere that the Allman Brothers were playing. This happened early in 71 before Duane died, the blues runs deep in me. My father was crying the day Duane died and I didn't understand for awhile and then it hit that this was the man who blew me away with his slide. Tears of joy

One of the best debut albums ever and this tops it off. You need to see this live with the original band at the Filmore, it is on You Tube and twice as long as the original and just as good in a live setting. Duane on guitar and Greg on vocals and keyboards are the brothers, sadly both gone now BUT they were a force of nature when both were alive. Do it live From 9/23/1970 for sure and also Dreams from the same original, debut album, they both will send you into a zone! Nice reaction pretty lady, it is so nice to see what we considered great music is STILL great music! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Greg Allman on lead vocals and keys is amazing, so soulful. This song has so much in it blues, psychedelic, prog, rock, soul, country everything. Greg said this is one of those songs that just came to him quickly in one late night of writing.

One of my favorites by the Allman Brothers. I remember seeing them perform in Boston a few months before Duane died. Possibly the tightest band I've ever seen live. An unforgettable experience. And I enjoyed your reaction immensely ❤

I agree as long as we throw Frank Zappa in the mix. Man............if you talk about tight bands and leave Zappa out then you need some schooling.😉😈
@ptournas
@ptournas Жыл бұрын
@@iamkarma20 Well I've never seen Zappa live, but from the live videos I've seen I don't think his band was as consistently tight as the Allman Brothers, especially pre 80's. They did sound much tighter after that, although the cover of Whipping Post wasn't nearly as tight as the Allman Brothers. Zappa was brilliant and I've loved him ever since I bought his first album, and the slight variations in timing of some of the instruments in the band was not enough to detract from the great overall performances. It might just be the result of all the changes in personnel over the years. The Who was another band who gave great performances, but weren't particularly tight in their early years, but became very tight in later years. I might be more critical because I've been playing for over 50 years and learned more than 300 songs by ear. When you do that you listen in a different way than you do when you listen to music for pleasure, and you become more aware of what each individual instrument is playing. In 1966 I decided to learn "Like a Rolling Stone". I was surprised when listening to realize the organ was coming in slightly late on almost every note, because I had listened to song so many times before and never noticed it. It didn't detract from the song. It wasn't until a few years ago that I ran across an interview with Al Kooper about being basically a beginner on the organ and coming in late on notes because he would look at the keyboard to be sure his fingers were on the right keys before he hit them. That wasn't a unique experience. I discovered a lot of small mistakes and a few very noticeable ones by Jimmy Page when I started learning Led Zeppelin songs. Again I had never noticed them when listening to them before and, again, they didn't really take away from the greatness of the songs. Another I found the reason for many years later. Jimmy rarely would do more than 3 takes on a song because he thought too much of the feelin of the song was lost after playing sequentially too many times. So even though I mentioned being struck by the tightness of the Allman Brothers band, It's just a small part of the overall quality of the band in my opinion. I wouldn't judge a band by how tight they were unless they were so loose that it was distracting.

The rhythm probably really gets you, too. It's in eleven eight, eleven beats to the measure, so it sounds like it's kind of limping along while driving hard at the same time. One of my all time favorites. And Greg Allman, the greatest male singer in rock and roll IMO.

Great Reaction !! Thanks, for heading back into the Allman Brothers Band catalog Angela.! You picked one of there best songs IMO, If not there best. Glad you enjoyed it.! As good as the studio version of this song sounds, you owe it to yourself to listen to a live version when you have a chance. The best example I can think of is off there 1971 double album: Allman Brothers Band, Live at Fillmore East NY. 22 minutes, of sheer rock/blues/soul/etc. etc. heaven.! The entire double album has been voted as one of the best, if not the best live rock/blues etc. etc. recordings, of all times. I must say, I agree. Thanks Again.!

Greg Allman was one of the greatest white blues singers. Duane was one to the greatest blues rock guitarists ever, on of the greatest slide guitar players ever. And I have probably listened to that album more than any other by any band. I am not crazy about the label Southern band of Southern Rock to describe them. For me they are blues- rock but expressed with elements of blues, rock, country, jazz, psychedelic and even Latin sounds. Close your eyes and listen to Stormy Monday on the Fillmore East album. The guitars seem to become alive with a soul crying out their pain and anguish.
