masterguitaracademy.com/join-... The Altered Scale - Q & A with Robert Renman - this is a cool scale to use over Dominant 7 chords. Here I'm using it to go from the I chord to the IV chord. This is kind of a jazz blues approach. Jazz musicians use this scale often. When you play over a typical blues, you can use this scale to surprise the listener a bit. It will instantly sound a bit jazzy and is something you hear more and more in modern blues. Just don't overdo it, since it's easy to sound kind of artificial and overly academic (BORING) if you use the altered scale too much.
Gear: I used a Fender Am. Strat with Zexcoil Pickups - zexcoil.com
The amp: Skyraider SR-15 from MackAmps.com
The fantastic reverb is from Room & Verbs for EZ Mix 2, from www.toontrack.com/

Thanks Robert, I'd heard these many times over the years but didn't know or understand what I was hearing. Hey, tasty with tension and resolution, very nice! Not to mention the variations that can be drawn from this. You always deliver, and that's incredibly helpful!

Thankyou Robert, another great lick.I hear it more as V chord to I chord A.

+Simon Bland It is that too.... you can use that lick over any V chord. In this situation, the I chord actually becomes the V chord, just before you go to the IV chord.

The I7alt plays the role of the secondary dominant of the IV7, it is no longer the I7. So the progression would be I7-V7/IV7-IV7.

Besides the excellent content...the reverb really kicked me! Sounds awesome! By the way, I think Oz Noy is one of the guys who's making great use of the altered scale.

I am thinking about starting a guitar tip channel. fact is I do NOT think about everything as much as most of you guys. For Example . A7 I would play the Altered scale Jump up to that B on the high E string and descend Melodic Minor right over D Dom. .........................I know the Minor 3rd and major 7 I know it's gonna sound outside. I don't care that much. I just see if I like it........................... You are far beyond me as far as knowledge goes but if I like it. Isn't that all that matters. I love the videos................. By the way TY

Hi Robert, Thanks for your videos. I purchased your advanced blues solo last week. It's coming along well. I'm a bit confused about this lick. It's sounds to me like you are resolving a V-I, with E7#9, being the V going to an A7, I. Any tips on getting this in my head correctly? I want to add some more interesting licks to my blues playing. Thank you.

+Paul Story Yeah it can be both. The I chord to the IV chord has the same distance as from V to I. So we are both right. It's very common that jazz players play the Alt. Scale over such a situation, during the last bar before going to the next chord. So for example a blues in E, I chord to IV chord - from E7 to A7. It could be E7 to A Maj7 too - the point is the resolution. Or the tune is a blues in A, so the V chord is E7, which resolves back to the I - A7. Makes sense? Any time you have a Dominant 7 chord, and the next chord is a 4th above, this will work, usually for the last measure before the next chord. Think key of E. From E to A is a 4th (E, F#, G#, A). Now think key of A. From E to A is still the same distance - a 4th. E is the V chord of A, yes, but going up to A from E is a 4th. You see there are two ways to look at it. If you play from A to E, it's a 5th - A, B, C#, D, E - 5 notes.

Thanks. Questions for you. I see that over the purple Haze chord, you started the altered scale on a D, the 7. Is that where you would normally start?

@@Dolphinstreets thanks. I was trying it out. This is a nice missing link for me because I'm trying to solo over a lot of old jazz standards that have a lot of diminished and augmented chords.

Great lesson, just a quick question: Why do you notate is as 1 b9 #9... etc instead of I b2 #2? I know these are the same intervals just an octave or two lower, but is the 9 specific to the altered scale rather than the 2?

+cranky You can view it either way, practically speaking. From Wikipedia: In jazz, the altered scale or altered dominant scale is a seven-note scale that is a dominant scale where all non-essential tones have been altered. This means that it comprises the three irreducibly essential tones that define a dominant seventh chord, which are root, major third, and minor seventh and that all other chord tones have been altered. These are:the ninth, which has two altered forms: minor ninth and augmented ninththe eleventh, which has one altered form: the augmented elevenththe fifth, which has two altered forms: the diminished fifth and the augmented fifthand the thirteenth, which has one altered form: the minor thirteenthThe altered forms of some of the non-essential tones coincide (augmented eleventh with diminished fifth and augmented fifth with minor thirteenth) meaning those scale degrees are enharmonically identical and have multiple potential spellings. The natural forms of the non-essential tones are not present in the scale. This means it contains no major ninth, no perfect eleventh, no perfect fifth, and no major thirteenth.

don't get me started on this scale. I can think of Off the top of my head? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Keys I think I use it in against a root chord. A few lack musicality but make up for in abstractness . haa
