The Amazing Chase

Jack Thompson set out to ride the 2021 Tour de France route as fast as he could. 3,552km divided over 21 stages, chasing down the pros on his way to Paris.
What would it take? What was realistic? What was possible? Now we know.
10 days, with a warm-down stage on the Champs Elysees - as per tradition.
Jack dreamt up The Amazing Chase three years ago, and it has taken until 2021 to complete. What he didn’t quite expect was the rollercoaster he’d go through while doing it. Simple factors like the weather and fatigue are easy to talk about (and important to acknowledge), but also the internal battles that aren’t always easy to see, much less discuss, work through and write about.
When we interviewed Jack the day before he rolled out, we asked him if he thought the challenge would be difficult. What we didn’t expect him to reply was ‘no’. What he told us was that when you’ve suffered through depression and darkness and loneliness, riding a bike 350km a day is manageable. You pedal, and you keep on pedaling. And like opening up about mental health issues, you make it out the other side stronger and more experienced.

I can relate fully to Jack, I had a problem with drug abuse and was a street intrenched heroin addict after loosing my pro skateboarding career. I since have become a Cat 1 bike racer on the road, but see myself doing more ultra and more Ultra Gravel rides especially, I am very lucky to have sponsor support for most of these rides but I will never suffer like I suffered in addiction. So when I suffer on the bike I feel like its a privilege to suffer while doing something so fun in some beautiful areas of the world.

Dude I'm the same. Had some major surgeries and was hooked on pain pills for 3 years I quit cold turkey and instantly started running and riding. Now I just purely love the high I get from pushing myself and proving to myself I'm stronger mentally than I give myself credit for

@@nathanluther39 That's awesome, Yeah it's tough after injuries, that's what did me in and so many others i see fall in the same dark place. Kudos man, I know how tough it is. I race against dudes that have been training and fit their whole lives and knowing where I came from to be up there... we definatley need to credit ourselves !!

I don’t understand; if he could catch them why can’t he beat them? Are there qualifications that he can’t achieve? I’m new to road biking. Just a casual bikepacking observer here lol. Forgive my ignorance. And ty for helping me understand the greatness of what was done.
@TJonesMTB
@TJonesMTB 2 жыл бұрын
He didn’t “catch them”. Incredible achievement, but what he simply did was ride the stages and then transition faster than the tour. They had dinner and slept and breakfast and rode one stage a day. He stacked them all into one consecutive effort. Amazing achievement to ride that volume, but “catch” is a bit miss leading. Hopefully that clarifies it a bit for you. Regardless, impressive effort Jack💪🏼

Amazing athletic. Amazing achievement. Though the story telling and the doco is a big let down. Could have done in several different ways to make it a much better film. The guy already done all the hard work. When was the last time u seen this kind of doco and the athletic doing the talk and narrative instead of focusing on his journey (joy/pain/emotion). All we see is him whining for 30 mins in a tone that seems it was a big mistake doing this and im glad it's over. Never again.
