It is one thing to see history and it is another to touch it. The 7th Cavalry revolver is believed by experts to have been a battlefield pickup while the Wild Bill Hickok revolver has been in the hands of private collectors for some time.

I had the honor of holding both firearms as I worked for RIA at the time of your visit and while the Wild Bill revolver was nice ...it was the Little Bighorn revolver that made your hair stand up on your neck as you felt the history in your hands and thought about what happened on that fateful day June 25th 1876!

I have the honor of being the current owner of an authentic Custer 7th Cavalry 1873 Springfield Carbine that is documented in the National Archives as having been returned to the Arsenal as 'unserviceable' along with many others recovered from the Little Big Horn Battlefield. The records also show that it was issued to someone in Troop C, but the Troopers name remains unknown. Troop C was actually with Custer during the battle on that day.

@@MilitaryHistory317 certainly. And if you are ever in the Los Angeles area, I could arrange to let you have a look at it if you'd like. My best friend Rick works as head custodian in Carmel at OLMC on 146th St. west of 31. If you want to stop by there and give him your contact information, he can forward it to me.

FYI you might be interested. Just west outside of Montrose Colorado, on the south side of hwy 50, there’s a museum you need to visit. The gentleman that built it was the chief archeologist on the Little Bighorn battle site. When I met him several years ago he told me he had dug like 800 outhouse pits. His collection is incredible. A lifetime must see.

50 cents for a pair of pistols??? Yeah I know that was a long time ago but a pair of pistols had to have been $40-$50 a pair when new? So used, good condition should be worth half of that (?) I could never stumble into a deal like that!

Just to share something cool about Hickok for those of you that don't know. His skill as a gunfighter was true blue. Hollywood can make some of our heroes appear larger than life, but Hickok reached that threshold. Fact is, in the civil war, he was a sniper armed with a specially made rifle for that object. And even back then, was loaded with smokeless gunpowder.

I wish it were not so that private collectors, with all their millions, deny the rest of us the priceless value of tangible history. Here is a genuine bow of thanks to those who don't.

Sir, you may be aware that there was controversy over both Pistols such as provenance and authenticity. 600, 000$ for the LBH Colt shows that someone bought into the provenance story, Big Time, I did not. :)

LOL. Yes, the thread of evidence to LBH is very thin. It is interesting that the Serial Number confirms that this was a 7th CAV revolver. The how and where it changed hands is a great mystery. Another thing that seems fun to speculate about is the holster. Who purchased this Civil War era private label holster? We will never know, but it is fun to speculate about.
