In this video I show you how a Wilberforce pendulum works and how coupled oscillators work. I relate coupled oscillations to neutrino oscillation and the superposition of states.

Since he liked your comment... You can ask him for explanation why we don't see every 6 months different Stars. Because the Earth rotates around the Sun like 180 degrees so we supposed to see a constellation that we don't see right now in 6 months. But we don't why is that?.... come on action lab answer my question :)

@@sendvic12 The nearest star is ~4 lightyears away, the distance to our sun is about 8 lightminutes. So these 16 minutes don't matter in relation to these 4 years. You're totally right, you will see a different constallation every 6 months. But you'll need very exact observation.

@@sendvic12 But the constellations do change with the seasons, at least those near the ecliptic. Have you never noticed? Of course, things like the north star are always visible in a clear night on the northern hemisphere because the sun never goes above the north pole to outshine them with its light. But the zodiac constellations take turns of being behind the sun.

So, I have a question. If I rotate the pendulum, it can somehow change its rotation to back and forth?
@SirPhysics
@SirPhysics 3 жыл бұрын
Assuming both modes of rotation have similar resonant frequencies yes.
@ulysses4536
@ulysses4536 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, because twisting a spring will make it contract/expand depending on the direction of twist, so it will start wobbling and then increase the amplitude. Like Crowe3717 mentioned, if the frequencies match then it will be more efficient at transferring the rotational energy to wobble. However, it will be rather tricky to show at the same amplitude as in the video. If you notice, the speed of rotation has to be very high to store the same amount of energy as just a 0.5m of spring expansion. So to have a similar amplitude you would need to somehow give it a spin of that angular speed. I would do that by having a long thin stick pointing downwards from the mass, and I would give it a twist by pressing it between my palms while quickly moving them along each other in opposite directions, like that propeller toy you might have seen.
@ewthmatth
@ewthmatth 3 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna say no. In this video, he skipped over the reason WHY the stretching of the spring is coupled with the spinning of the weight. I think it is because a spring has to twist somewhat when it stretches or contracts (opposite twist direction, respectively). So what I'm saying is that's what allows the bouncing of the spring and the spinning of the weight to influence each other. I don't see how swinging of the pendulum and the spinning of the weight could be linked. Edit: maybe it would be partially possible. But I think you would have to give an initial push to start the swinging. No way it would start swinging just from spinning (if the spinning is ideally balanced)
@ewthmatth
@ewthmatth 3 жыл бұрын
What did you mean by "back and forth"? U Lysses answered your question as if you meant "up and down". I answered your question as if you meant swinging back and forth. Your wording is unclear.

Hey Fella I would really like to know about why dont we see atoms in our retina if light creates the image of an object in our eyes?!
@SirPhysics
@SirPhysics 3 жыл бұрын
1) atoms are smaller than the wavelengths of visible light we can detect, so they cannot even in theory be viewed with visible light. That's why electron microscope exist. 2) The resolving power of the human eye is much too low to make it distinct objects the size of atoms, so even if it were possible to see atoms with visible light our eyes aren't sensitive enough to resolve objects that small.

@@SirPhysics ? If you're asking why you can't see your retina cells it's the same reason your cellphone doesn't take a picture of its ccd sensor. If you're asking why you can't see atoms visible light has too long of a wavelength. Or are you asking something else? Electronic chips use far uv light to image the masks during their fabrication. There's a few utubers that have made their own ic chips but their features are huge compared to current devices.

I witnessed the rotating/bobbing phenomenon at work today. I work on a vertical lathe. Today I lifted a 3 ton piece with a 3,2 ton rotary crane (see google image search). The piece was thin at top and wide at bottom. I set it spinning and lowered it a bit. As it's quite heavy, it started bobbing up and down. Remembering this video, I observed it and yes, the rotation slowed and the bobbing amplified. Then the rotation sped up and the bobbing stopped. I've noticed it before, but thought my eyes/brain was short circuiting. But now I know it's real and also the reason for that, altough I don't still understand the weird connection between these two movements. Thanks for the video!
