It features Ashleigh, a blind teenager who has severe hearing loss and who is on the autism spectrum, her parents Christine and Steve, and Adam Ockelford, founder of The Amber Trust.
Ashleigh’s story is a part of ‘Amber Sound Touch’, The Amber Trust’s online resource for teaching music to blind and partially sighted children and young people, including those with additional disabilities.

The Amber Trust was founded in 1995 to provide blind and partially sighted children, including those with additional disabilities, the best possible chance to meet their musical needs and aspirations and fulfil their potential. Amber aims to enhance the lives of as many of the 25,000 visually impaired children in the UK as possible through music, and to promote high quality music provision.

What remarkable playing by Ashleigh.. The Amber Trust is incredible. What dedicaton and patience all the staff show in helping blind autistic children. Her playing is inspiring. Staggering that 40% of blind children have perfect pitch. I was brought here by Channel 4 Lucy's piano playing . Truly awe inspiring.

I wish i'd known about soemthing like this when I was a child, i'm blind and my mum tried to get me piano lessons but every teacher she approached said no it was not possible. I've had to teach myself through friends and a brief time at college when I had a few lessons. Piano was something I always wanted to learn and listening to these peoples stories has made me start joining a meetup every couple of months where I get to play. I'm hoping to start in the future trying to learn some proper piano pieces.

Your work is amazing! I would go to one of her piano concert wich i never attended before! I love music. Be priud of her oarents she can touch many people souls and heart with her playing! She's a marvelous human being!❤👌

Thank you Amber Trust , your working with these children gives us a real picture into our own subconscious child mind can do . I named my subconscious three year old child, Allen Barclay Allen . This child within all of us is what Jesus was speaking about when he said suffer the little children to come unto me for for of such is the kingdom of heaven ..!

There is a historical assumption that many great composers were neurodivergent. This child is certainly not a parrot, she belongs to a long line of extraordinary artists who perhaps had the same link with the world and emotions.

I'm encouraged to see people with hearing impairment enjoying and learning music. I have developed some hearing issues. I've had tinnitus my whole life and after having Covid I noticed some more hearing difficulties. I just got back into music after a 20 year hiatus, and have been a bit nervous about how I will navigate music with my declining hearing. This does my heart good to see that hearing impairment doesn't have to mean no more music.

The rapport with their teachers is astounding. The ability of her to know how to access their mental/physical limitations. This is a weakness with tutors and able-bodied musicians!

He is Professor Adam Ockelford, Chair of The Amber Trust. Adam founded the charity in 1995, and much of his research with the University of Roehampton has shaped the music services we offer to blind and partially sighted children.
