From Oakland to Yale University, AKINTUNDE AHMAD, “beat the odds' by earning a 5.0 GPA and scoring a 2100 on his SATs. He was accepted into many Ivy League schools and proves that, with hard work and support from family, anything is possible. From Oakland, California he graduated from Yale University. His academic success made national headlines and his story was even picked up by Ellen DeGeneres who featured him on her show.
As an African American person who was born and raised in Oakland, CA, AKINTUNDE AHMAD always wanted to return to the land of his ancestors and spend time in West Africa. He got his opportunity in 2016 when he chose to spend half of the year taking time away from US to study at the University of Ghana.
He was immediately captivated by the fashion culture in Accra. What made him love the scene was that each person dressed so uniquely. With an abundance of tailors and access to any kind of fabric you could desire, from woven kente to wax print to bogolanfini (mudcloth), people could quickly get anything they imagined turned into a reality. He immediately started sketching designs, visiting fabric markets, and getting his own pieces made, and the idea for Ade Dehye was born. Ade, his middle name, means royal in Yoruba, and Dehye means royal in Twi.
He started off making items for himself and his family, but whenever he posted pictures on social media or wore these outfits back in the states, friends and strangers would ask where he got his clothes from and how could they get their hands on something similar. After thinking about the idea for years, in 2020, He actually made the decision to start the brand and fuse West African textiles with urban streetwear and luxury design, and he hasn't looked back since.
Ade Dehye is a fashion brand that draws inspiration from across the African Diaspora. They are ethically and sustainably made in Ghana, and all of their textiles are sourced on the continent of Africa. So far, all of the fabrics they've used are either hand-dyed or handwoven on the continent. It’s one thing to be Black-owned, but it’s another to be 100% Black-owned and operated, all the way down to the weaving and dyeing of the fabric and the tailoring of the finished product. While some companies only look to the continent to be a recipient of charity or share a portion of their proceeds, they chose to invest directly into the continent and set up shop in Ghana, contributing to the country's growing economy as we build. AKINTUNDE AHMAD sat with Dentaa and shared his educational journey and his transition to the continent...

Great conversation! My take as a black person living in America, is that while black panther was a cool movie, it had no real impact on people considering moving. Everyone in the US considers Hollywood to be what it is, which is fantasy. The real changes are coming because of youtube, primarily WODE MAYA and shows like yours, Dentaa. I know a lot of people that are moving, and it's all because social media is showing a different story from the lies told.

The narrative isn’t that Black Panther made AAs interested in the continent. I’m so tired of her saying that. No, as this young man explains social media is making it easier for the diaspora to engage one another and build bridges. That’s the story, Pan Africanism has largely been the province of academics and social activists. However, with social media everyday people can connect organically and authentically, it’s easier to navigate. But also since Black Panther there seems to be more of a welcoming towards African Americans with overtures from the continent. I’ve not seen this kind of out reach from the continent reaching back ever before in my lifetime. That’s also a big part of the story. @dentaashow should explore that aspect, the continent seems finally ready to welcome folks back.

Hi Erica, In my humble opinion we have been programmed against each other from our former colonial oppressors. They want to make sure that negative stereotypes of each other stick in our minds. Social media ( KZfaq) especially for me has broken down so many of the lies they have been able to perpetuate. I'm sure they didn't expect this would happen. My hope is that we realize that we have no friends, and that we need Africans on the continent and those abroad to unite economically, physically, mentally and spiritually. We must find ways to navigate our differences for the future generations to be respected at home and abroad. 😊

In GH, we used to call some of us that were born with white father or white mother "half-casts or morlato". Some of our elders saw them as "bastardized" because White men didn't claim their African children. We treated them as part of our blankness. There was no different among us. If people remember, we used to sing "Say It Loud, I am Black and Proud" by James Brown

Morlato? Is that GH pronunciation? Mulatto is how the west says it. Just checking because U hear some familiar words from Ghanaians but sounds different from how we say it. I wasn't sure if I heard them correctly.

My sister I agree with you! But in the media this is predominantly where they like to portray melanated people! But if I knew one race of people had the DNA to be masters of the planet, I would encourage them and there descendants to purse fields of little economic influence! Stay safe sis.✊🏿

Seriously? Dentaa? Why does it have to be an American dream in Ghana? Why can't it be an African or Ghanaian dream? If you are trying to change the narrative then you should go all the way. Otherwise very good episode.

This is the problem with Africans in the Diaspora and Africa. Why would any Black person in their right mind talk about American dream in Africa? There is no such thing as American dream for black folks or people of African descent in America. There is nothing positive in the American constitution for black people. Don't be fooled diasporas. If you're moving moving back home to the Continent to make Africa great, please clean your mind's of the American lies before you go home, there is no place in Africa for American dream. Africa needs Africans to come home and help to build Africa not Africans with American state of mind, please leave that in America. Africa needs African minds we build every Country in the world for free, they do everything evil yo us yet we become stronger, that's how great we are as Africans, now let help build Africa as Africans we are the Greatest people on this planet.
