When I returned from Vietnam at 21 years old I learned a valuable life lesson. The politicians that sent me there wanted nothing to do with me when I came home. I went back to college while my friends were graduating. People often say war changes you. What they don’t often understand is that the way they treat veterans changes them, too.

Hopefully we can work on educating people so we can get the reps out of office and we can finally start getting bills passed to help the vets. That is more important now than ever considering how they voted almost unanimously against the veteran healthcare bill recently.
@sunshinelizard1
@sunshinelizard1 Жыл бұрын
That time was dark and harbors a lot of regrets. I think that's when Americans realized our government was getting the U.S. into wars when there weren't good reasons to do so and we were lied to. The veterans suffered an unforgivably horrific price in that they were hated when they returned. They were drafted and hated for going. The police were hated then too, called "pigs". We're still getting into wars for no good reason and being lied to about it. Vets are no longer being spat on, but they're not getting the medical care they need either. Currently, people slam those who did dodge the Viet Nam war. They don't bother to read the history and have no clue what was going on and why it became considered the right thing to do. That history is critical to learn, but it seems it's not being taught or heard.

@@hosamhosam9204 If you plan to kill, then you aren't innocent. It's not like they were actively being shot at the time and they killed in self defense. They actively chose to attack armed soldiers and they were only killed when there was probable cause that it was either them or the soldier(s) that were going to die. Just because some scenarios where you kill someone is justifiable, doesn't mean your hands are clean. You lose your innocence the second you participate in a war in any capacity.
@hosamhosam9204

@@a_angry_bunny not really. Not necessarily being shot at, their families being shot at, their country and resources being stole, their country being destroyed. You say its not like they were shot at, meaning that they can be innocent if they defended themselves. Why cant it be the same if defending once family or country? Also, what other alternative do they have? If i want to stay innocent, i should let invaders destroy my country while i do nothing, otherwise they will have the right to shoot me? No, if an intruder got into my house and he has a gon, i have the right to shoot at him, he doesnt have the right to shoot at me. If i did, i am a guy defending his house, while if he did, he is a bigger criminal than if he stood there and ate the bullets

He tried to help but (quite literally) got back-stabbed. 2. You can’t just decide to not be there, there’s regulations and code to that. 3. Keep your hatred for the politicians, but don’t take your anger out on your protectors. People join the army because they believe they’re fighting for their country, not because they want to kill others. It may come to that at times, but vets aren’t looking for it. I started hanging around him and his buddies when I was just a kid. I remember alot of the war stories. I dont know how many people my uncle killed in that war but I knew it was alot and some of them were children. He told me kids would Suicide themselves by putting a bomb in a shoe shine box try to sell a shine job to a G.I. and if the G.I. agreed the kid would open the box and the bomb would go off killing them both. Once he was liquored up really good he said he was in a fire fight and 2 kids were charging him with rifles with bayonets he popped them both. He said the rifles were taller than the kids. He was having a real hard time talking about it and it was the only time I seen the man cry. I could'nt even imagine how horrible that was.

However as a historian myself I will say that we strive to be scientific and objective but as humans we can never achieve that in the practice of history - this it’s no true science. Not saying that you cannot trust history books, but you should always keep in mind what the background of the writer is. For example a Russian history writer might say that the Russians who stopped the Golden Horde from the Asian Steppes might be the greatest victory for Europe because otherwise we would be ruled by Mongolians. A European historian might never research/read about that war and declare another war world defining. Both are not lying but they have different backgrounds, different knowledge, etc
