Hi guys!!
I have been an AMPUTEE since 2004.
In 2000 I had a paragliding accident, after which I struggled with complications of my left leg for four years. Constant infections and acute, chronic pain pushed me to the point where I considered amputation. Ultimately it was the right decision, which opened up a completely different way of life to me.
Today I am a happy, content amputee. Not without struggles and challenges, these are a given, but with the ability to be curious, accepting, and intentional about managing these difficulties. In this channel I aim to share what it is that got me to this space. I hope that you find your own happiness, despite, and even because of, the struggles of becoming an amputee :-)

Thanks so much for your kind words, and for supporting the channel. I have often wondered how it must be to loose a leg at such a young age, I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. A train incident sounds so frightening, really traumatic and impossible to fathom how scared you must have been. Thanks for sharing this, and I hope you are managing well as an amputee. Hope to see you on the next live stream, please share if you feel OK to do so. Thanks again for commenting and your motivating feedback, much appreciated.

Hi Colin, thanks for your message! To lose your leg at such a young age must be quite confronting to come to terms with, hard for me to imagine how it must have affected you. Despite this you seem to be quite motivated and curious about what possibilities are out there for you, which I really respect, and will surely help you to live the full life you are hoping and able to live. Do you still ride a motorcycle? I stopped when I lost my leg, but a few years ago started again, and really enjoying it as much as I used to. Like you I also never spoke to other amputees, for many years, but when I stared doing these video's a lot of that changed, and its been really helpful. Thanks for letting me know it's helped you, this means a great deal to me, and I appreciate it. Hope to see you at the live stream on Sunday 5th, Im hoping we can all have some fun and learn from each other by sharing ideas, asking questions, and generally just having a space to connect and chat. All the best mate!

Chris sorry I couldn't stay for all the live stream. Read the transcripts. My knee is a basic ottobock 3R78. My prosthetic is my right leg. So I Can lift my good leg de or only a very short time less than a second, that doesn't permit me to hold my weight on my prothestic. I'm thinking it's then my socket. I had amputation from diabetes. Now under control also weight is ok

@theampedlife Жыл бұрын
Hi Oscar, thanks so much for joining, I really appreciate it, and that you commented and participated. Hope you will join us next time again. If you can't put weight on your prothetic something is not right, this is my thought. We are all different, but I believe we should be able to put full weight on for at least a few seconds. If it hurts its the socket, if you're unbalanced it possible is the alignment. Weight will be a factor, so well done for keeping it controlled, I know how hard that can be as we grow older :-) All the best, hope to hear more from you in the future!

Wow 40 years, double the years I've been an amp for, we can all probably learn a lot from you, please join us in the live streams in the future, would be great to have your wisdom there. Which sneakers, great question. I use Salomon Speedcross 4, I find for comfort, grip and all round practicality they are the best I've tried. Been using these for around 6 years now, really great. Maybe not the most trendy, but I still think they look great, to go along with how well they work for me. Check them out: www.salomon.com/en-int/shop-int/men/shoes/trail-running-shoes.html

Hello. I really love your videos they are always so informative and helpful. I am really sorry for this long comment...I am not an amputee but my boyfriend is. I am reaching out to you here because at the moment I am utterly helpless. My boyfriend became an amputee at 9 years old due to a traumatic accident. And it's been 16 years since then. He has prosthetic legs to walk now and is fully independent. He is one of the most amazing human beings I have ever met I want to marry my him but my parents are completely against it solely due to the fact that he is an amputee. They have said horrible, degrading things about him and they do not see him as a normal human being. They have been trying their best to manipulate me into leaving him and do not feel any remorse for their actions. There is also one thing that they claim which is that amputees become bed ridden and their residual limbs completely decay as they age and they are telling me that he is just looking for a slave and that is why he wants to marry me. I have done a lot of research about this claim and I could not find any evidence of this. I was hoping to know from you if you know anything of this sort and what can I do to prove them wrong and understand me.
@theampedlife
@theampedlife 11 ай бұрын
Hi Sarah, thanks you for the kind and thoughtful message. I am always happy to read them and reply when I have a moment to check in on the comments posted. I really respect your support of your boyfriend, and openness about the opposition from your patents. Thank you for sharing this with me. Firstly, I think he is amazing for making the best of what must have been a very challenging experience. From what you've shared I gather that he is a bi-lateral amputee, which comes with many challenges to deal with which single leg amputees do not have to contend with. I admire his courage and will to live, perseverance, and confidence to be in a relationship with you. Secondly, I work extensively with many amputees from different walks of life, men and women, young and old and from varied socio-economic backgrounds and careers. These are such an amazing bunch of people, rarely ever complain and mostly motivated to live a full, independent life. Your parent's attitude to your choice of partner is disappointing for many reasons. Surely it is about the human being, the individual, his personality and outlook on life, his perseverance in the face of adversity, and being a decent man, which matters the most. The fact that he is an amputee is so secondary to all of this in my view. I have met some awful fully abled people, and some exceptional amputees. It is because of who they are, and has nothing to do with having legs, arms, fingers and toes. Many of my personal friends are amputees, these are some of the most exceptional people I know. Their empathy and understanding, kindness, support of others, and will to live is what defines them, not their legs or lack of it. In contrast to this I find your parents attitude towards your boyfriend's situation quite appalling. I do not know them, and am not here to judge anyone, but that sort of behaviour seems judgemental, unfounded, and outdated to say the least. This is about your well-being, right to choose, happiness, and need for a trusted partner in your life. If your boyfriend meets your needs he is surely the right person for you? His determination in taking care of himself suggests that he will do the same for someone he loves, and cares about. It looks like your parents are wanting you to make a choice which will make them happy, as opposed to a choice which will ensure the happiness of their daughter. I find this to be a self-centred approach to raising your children, and can never have a good outcome. There is NO evidence out there to support their belief that he is out to use you for his own exclusive gain. For your parents to bad-mouth him, and manipulate you into leaving him, merely because he looks different to them, is mean and unbelievably unkind. I feel so sorry that you need to deal with this. I do believe that they most likely love their daughter, but this is controlling behaviour, not caring behaviour. I have amputee friends ranging in age from 14 to 70's, and none of them are bed-ridden. Quite the opposite, they seem to have a strong will and desire to live well, and be decent independent human beings. It sounds like your boyfriend is one of these people - seeking out what is good for him and the people he loves and cares about. This is your life, you choice, your freedom to live how you choose to, and with who you choose to live it. If he meets your needs, is independent and motivated, a kind person, caring and loving, considerate and honest, and he loves you as you love him, then surely you have something special which transcends everything else. I hope these shared thoughts help you, and more than anything I hope that you find happiness with him, and can be assertive about what you want in your life. I wish you all the best, and feel free to ask any more questions you might have. Take care Sarah, and regards and best wishes to your boyfriend!

You mentioned that you work closely with amputees, is there any medical expert that you know of that I may be able to talk to and get some sort of proof or opinion? It would be really helpful @@theampedlife
@theampedlife
@theampedlife 11 ай бұрын
Hi Sarah, my thoughts on your question here are: There are many professionals who would agree with me. But - ultimately it does not really matter what others think, or whether proof exists. What matters is what you believe, the quality of your relationship with your BF, your dedication to each other, and your commitment to a healthy, meaningful and independent life together. You don't have to prove anything to your parents, or get their permission for being in a relationship with anyone. I think what you want is their blessing, and considering how they have treated him I don't think that is going to happen, which is really quite sad and disappointing. It seems that you have a decision to make, regardless of how they respond, and to commit to what you believe is best for you two. This is hard, I really understand how dificult this can be, but the alternative to aforementioned is to continue to pursue something they are either unable or unwilling to give you. I feel for you, no one wants to be in this situation with their parents. Your boyfriend's goodness lies in his heart and mind, not in his legs or lack of it. I hope you guys find the courage to decide what you want, independent of what biasses others hold. I wish you the best with this and that it all works our well 🙏

Your decision reflects a lot of courage, and I hope that you are well rewarded for it with no future infection, good health and improved mobility. All the best for 2nd march, and please keep in touch. My best suggestion is that you really protect your wound. Let it heal well, protect it from bumps and contamination, and when safe and possible let the wound breathe, give it some fresh air. Also, as soon as it is safe start the process to get onto a prothesis. I waited 8 weeks, and the progression filled me with optimism and gratitude. Please let us know how it went, see you on the next live stream 😊
