A touristic visit to the beautiful ancient Roman ruins of Djémila in Algeria. Founded in AD 96 as a Roman military garrison, the ancient town of Cuicul is set on a hillside with grand vistas. It is a UNESCO world heritage site - as "an interesting example of Roman town planning adapted to a mountain location".
This video features views of the ruins including overall views, the Cardo Maximums (main street), the forum, arches, basilica, curia, temples, Christian Quarter, fountains, markets, theater, baths and latrine. The site has is in a remarkable state of preservation and it shows how the Romans adapted their city planning to this hilltop site.
Special highlights of the Arch of Caracalla, the Severan Forum and the Gens Septimia.

One of the best informative videos of this site. I had no idea it existed when I spent a few months in Algeria as a kid, in 1972. I stayed in Skikda, where my dad was working at the time. I see now that it would have been a three hour trip by road or roughly 160-200 km.

@@samirayaici961 Thank you! My mother also wishes to visit Algeria one day. We do not have the old address in Skikda, but have a rough idea...it was one of the side streets parallel to Avenue Didouche Murad. We were not far from the 'Plaza' or La Place. We lived in a rented apartment and a lot of our neighbours were Spanish, who worked and lived there. I remember our landlord's daughter's name was Fatima. I wrote a short story on our stay there and have some old photos, I can share.

Thank you for a most informative video. Your narration is excellent. You have done thorough diligence and it does tribute to those long ago Romans who lived and worked in this city so far from Rome. Was there a military garrison assigned? One thing a bit distracting is bringing in what I assume is culturally local background music and chanting between your narrative comments.I don’t make the connection between that and the ancient city...

Hello - thank you for your comments. Yes - military were stationed there and often retired to the area. I don't know if a specific division was stationed at Djemila. I do like to learn about the places I travel - bit of a history nerd. Regarding the music - I prefer a bit of background to fill out the video - it was recorded in a nearby place.

Algeria seemed to me very safe - but you must travel with a tour company or private tour guide. The tourism industry is not as robust as in either Tunisia or Morocco on either side. I think there is challenges crossing the border by land from Tunisia. But I felt safe and well cared for by our tour guides. It is also challenging to obtain a visa since they do not allow many visitors. So it can be more challenging to visit Algeria - but it is very worthwhile!!
