Mantras, in Eastern Vedic tradition, are the cryptic verses that millions of people chant every day as a ritualistic practice. They are often mysterious and enigmatic. People generally chant these hymns without understanding their meaning. But that is really insignificant. Because, the truth is, the power of mantras lies not in their meaning, but in their sound! It is the very act of chanting that bestows power on these sacred hymns!
Mantra literally means an utterance. It is a sound or a syllable. According to Sadhguru, one of the most renowned modern-day practitioners of Mantra Yoga, mantras are impulses or rhythms of the consciousness. They create vibrations in the spirit. Their effects, influence, method, and mode of working are all a mystery.
Modern science too sees the whole of existence as reverberations of energy, at different levels of vibrations. If there are vibrations, there are sounds. That would mean that the whole existence could be understood in terms of sound too. Vedic science looks at the universe and human existence as a big amalgamation of various levels of sounds or mantras. Among these multiple sounds, some are identified as the key sounds. If you can identify them and master them and absorb them into your daily life, they will become your keys to opening up a higher level of consciousness within you. This is the rationale behind the secret science of mantra yoga.
[Origin of Mantras]
Mantras originated with the great ancient teachings of India called Vedas. The Rig Veda, the oldest and the most central Vedic text, contains most of the mantras. According to David Frawley, the great scholar in Vedic literature, the Rig Veda is the fountainhead of Vedic science, the ancient spiritual science of the Himalayas from which such systems as Yoga, Vedic astrology (Jyotish), and Ayurveda (traditional Indian Medicine) arose. It is the basis of the Sanskrit language and culture. It is also the oldest book in any Indo-European language. There is a general recognition that the mantric or sound power of the Vedic chants in the Sanskrit language is the most sacred and mysterious power that human language has ever achieved.
According to the Vedic tradition, the mantras have their origin in Lord Shiva himself. Om Swami recounts a story about it in his book:
Out of compassion for all living beings across the universes, Bholenath, that is, Lord Shiva, merrily raised his damaru or drum and began playing it. As he danced to its heady rhythm, millions of sounds spread in the sky like stars in space. Every time the string of the damaru swooshed through the air, it created a sound. Many other sounds of different frequencies were produced when the beads at the end of the string would strike the damaru heads. Shiva’s moving hands and feet too created sounds. His swaying matted locks, the sound of rudraksha beads around his wrists, the slithering cobra around his neck ... every movement gave birth to a sound. And each sound was a mantra representing the feminine, masculine or neutral aspect of creation. From his kundala or ear-loops, originated the seed syllables of kundalini.

Yeah there is an ancient tradition that is mothers create a song of sounds for their unborn child. They start singing it to themselves to calm down. When the child is born they sing the song to comfort them and at all happy occasions so that when the child becomes an adult he has his song which he can harness powers of good memories from & which gives him "in the womb safety feeling" (in the womb = connected to God). I thought this is an ancient Indian tradition but maybe it was African or both idk^^

When you chant the mantra you can feel it vibrate in your body. If you focus on the sound vibrating the endocrine system, the pineal and pituitary glands in the head, thymus in the heart etc. you can feel the energy and colors show up inside your closed eyes. I came to understand that the colors were actually information and once I slept on it and allowed my mind to process it, there was profound insight. Ancient texts say that prayers were actually sounds that activated our connection to the Christ Consciousness. The pineal especially will stand erect and act as a transmitter for you helping you cross into the next dimension.

The African tribalritual related at the start of the vdo is novel & superb in its ethnicity & concept. The Bharatiya (Indian) civilization already hv a spiritually evolved version of the same ritual known as " Garbha Sanskara " where the pregnant mother reads softly Hindu scriptures , mantras n devotional songs as she goes abt her daily routines. This has a calming effect on the child inculcating subtle human values in the tender developing mind in the womb itself , hence the term . Garbha= womb , Sanskara = subtle orientation or ordination of psychological imprints & human values to assist the child in its earthly sojourn. Bharatiya Mothers hv been practicing this for ages all under the expert tutelage of their own mother's or the matriarch in the family. The mother of all civilization .... that's ancient "Bharatiya " civilization for you

Ancient Indians recognised foods in a different way than we recognise did these days. We recognise foods today as Veg and Non-Veg, but ancient Indians categorised foods into three groups and they are 1. Satvik Food - A food item which is consumed within 3-4 hours of cooking. This also includes uncooked food like fruits, vegetables, etc. These foods are very nutritious. These foods are considered most healthy. These foods give us a good feeling in our body. 2. Rajasik Food - Foods like sweets and rice. These are not that healthy but at the same time not that unhealthy. These foods give us a passion to do something. 3. Thamsik Food - Food items that are consumed after 4 hours of cooking. This also includes eggs and meat. These items are not that nutritious as Satvik and Rajasik Foods. But meat and eggs are more healthy to consume within 3-4 hours of cooking. These foods give us a negative/bad feeling and also we feel ignorant when we eat Thamsik Foods. Thank You for your time.

"By chanting a mantra one gathers power; there is no doubt about this. You can make up your own mantra if you want to; the words in a mantra have no significance at all. Words and meanings are not what mantras are about. So, any ordinary phrase, any meaningless word, can serve as a mantra. Whatever mantra you use, it makes no difference, because the whole purpose of the mantra is to concentrate your mind. Let us understand what a mantra does. What a mantra does When you chant a mantra, all the energy used in your thoughts is released to flow into the mantra. Only the mantra remains in your mind; all other avenues of thought are closed, all other outlets for your mental energy are shut off; there is nowhere else for it to flow. Normally, when you are thinking, your energy flows in countless different currents; one thought travels North, another South, another East, another West. When you think, you travel in many different directions. You are not one, you are not a unity; you are divided. But, when you chant a mantra, all the energy begins to flow in one direction. If we use a lens to converge the rays of the sun, fire can be created. The fire is hidden in the sun rays, but when they are separate, at the most some heat can be created, not fire. It is when they are concentrated together that the fire appears. In just the same way there is a great fire hidden in your mind, but as long as the rays of the mind are separate, only a little heat is there. Mantra is a method to concentrate the rays of your mind together. The moment this happens great heat and tremendous amount of energy is created. Beware of siddhis If you consistently practice a mantra, many phenomena relating to energy and power will begin to happen in your life, and they will provide great nourishment to your ego. Whatever you predict will come true, whatever you describe will happen exactly as you have said; if you curse it will come to pass; if you grant a wish it will come true, because so much energy and power is concentrated in you that your statements begin to materialise. The only reason for their materialisation is that when a person can invest great power in the things s/he says, his/her words enter directly into the unconscious of the listener-the arrow flies straight to the other’s heart. And, when anything reaches the heart it starts taking effect. Once your words begin to come true, your confidence will grow and you will feel ever more powerful. The more your words come true, the more you will feel yourself to be full of some divine power, some siddhi-the power to do miracles. This confidence will strengthen your mantra, and the mantra will increase your confidence; slowly you will come to experience many powers. Yoga has named these experiences of power as siddhis. These siddhis are the greatest obstacle on the way to realisation. Patanjali has mentioned them in the Yoga Sutras, so that one can keep clear of them. Never move in that direction; if you have, then come back-the sooner the better, because all the time spent in their company is time wasted, and every time you travel further in that direction, the coming back becomes more and more difficult."

@@melody.melody I thought these words by Osho might be appropriate. "The five vows of ahimsa, satya, achaurya, brahmacharya and aparigra, are the very base, the foundation [of Yoga]. They have to be understood as deeply as possible because there is a possibility to move without fulfilling these five steps which constitute the first step of yam [inner discipline, direction, centering]. You can find yogis and fakirs all over the world who have moved without fulfilling these five steps of the first step. Then they become powerful but their power is violent. Then they are very, very powerful, but their power is not spiritual. Then they become sort of black magicians; they can harm others. Power is dangerous; it can help, it can harm. Not only to others is it dangerous, it is dangerous to the person himself. It can destroy you; it can give you a rebirth. It depends. These five vows are just a guarantee that the power which arises out of discipline is not misused. You can see “yogis” displaying their power. That is impossible for a yogi, because if the yogi has really fulfilled these five vows he will no longer be an exhibitionist; he cannot display. He can no longer try to play with miracles; that is not possible for him. Miracles happen around him, but he is not the doer. These five vows kill your ego completely. Either the ego can exist or these five vows can be fulfilled. Both are not possible. Before you enter the world of power - and Yoga is a world of power, infinite power - it is very, very necessarily needed that you drop the ego outside the temple. If the ego is with you there is every possibility that the power is going to be misused. Then the whole effort becomes futile, a mockery...in fact, ridiculous. These five vows are to purify you, to make you a vehicle for the power to descend and for the power to become a beneficial influence, a blessing to others. They are a must. No one should bypass them. You can bypass them; in fact to bypass them is easier than to go through them because they are difficult. But then your building will be without a foundation. It is going to fall any day, collapse any day. It may kill your neighbors; it may kill you yourself. This is the first thing to be understood."

@@willieluncheonette5843 but don't we all live to die one day.. and most people come towards spirituality due to some desire they want to manifest. Mantra meditation is very powerful! I have been chanting the Maha Mantra for 8 years, and it really has changed my life. Both japa and kirtan are both necessary in the practice of Bhakti, and they reinforce each other. Hare Krishna!

Very clear, concise and well done. As someone who was blessed with a true lama, I can attest to the value of mantras. It is amazing that it originates from the vedas - so very long ago - and is still so very powerful and relevant today. My hope is that it is kept alive thru the upcoming ages and does not vanish with the advent of technological advances. Pay attention to the elements - earth, space, water, fire...

Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and was resurrected on the third day. He shed His blood on the cross for you. Your part is to repent of your sins and trust in Him. Because if you don't, you will be cast into the lake of fire FOR ALL ETERNITY!!! But, that`s not God`s desire for you. The GOOD NEWS is that, If you repent of ALL your sins and trust Jesus today, God will save you. He wants to give you eternal life as a FREE GIFT!!! THAT'S THE TRUTH!!! The Bible says that God will make you BORN AGAIN. He will give you a new heart and new desires. Accept it today!!! Tomorrow can be too late!! "Jesus answered him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

@All Law My friend, mantras won`t solve anything in your life and even less where you will spend your eternity! You have to turn to JESUS CHRIST!! You may ask, how can I do that? Simple, my friend, repent of your sins (forsake them), turn in childlike, humble faith to the Lord Jesus, believing in what He did for you - death, burial and resurrection. God will respond to such genuine faith and repentance by changing you from the inside out. You can do it today!

@@Mithoskrasnej New religions, my friend? No, just the only true religion, wich is Christianity. You can know it, too! Just repent of you sins and follow Jesus Christ, who shed His precious blood for you and me, so that we can be forgiven of our sins and have eternal life. Isn`t that amazing?? And it`s a FREE GIFT!! Accept it today!!

@@07silvali I mean I forgave myself for doing things that are not in line with other people beliefs already. There is no need for a 3rd party to forgive me too :) It is all in ones head after all...

I did research and the Himba people of Northern Namibia have the mantra practices spoken of at the start. Many civilizations in Africa use mantras and especially those around the equator where vibration is highest.
