The crowd chant is hilarious! It somehow worked its way into the Angels’ live performances over the years and gained so much traction that it’s become part of Aussie music folklore. The chant doesn’t feature in the studio recording but any Aussie who hears it on the radio will chant it at least inside their head if not aloud.

The crowd created those lyrics when The Angels would play in small pubs and live events, it was never a part of the official lyrics but it became iconic with the song. The band just ran with it.

In Australia we have a whole music genre called pub rock. The angels were definitely pub rock.

That crowds chorus “No Way; Get fucked; Fuck off” was never actually written in the lyrics. Apparently, at one of the Angels concert during this song someone yelled that out and it stuck. It’s now an integral part of the song.

For the US viewers, Bernard "Doc" Neeson was an actual PhD in Mathematics and used to be a High School teacher at Windsor Gardens High School, South Australia. R.I.P. Doc. Australia misses you!

Thanks for doing this mate. This shows why Aussie music from this period is so good. These bands did hundreds of live gigs and developed alongside their audiences. Doc Neeson was a better singer than is on display here but this performance was about the crowd. As you pointed out, he was wearing a tee shirt with the audience response. It was not part of the song. How many times must he have performed this on stage to get to the point where he had tee shirt made up? And the crowd didn’t let him down. That’s Aussie music.

One of the greatest Aussie bands .Met Doc Neeson in Perth , one the nicest blokes around , when he alive, bit quiet now that he's dead.

This song is about a girl who is injured in a car accident and her boyfriend asks “am I ever gonna see your face again “. The guitar into is the ambulance sirens. It’s based on a true story of a friend of Docs. P.S. she died in the accident.

While working at a club on the Sunshine Coast, Doc went out for a smoke before the showand managed to lock himself outside and the band was playing the intro he was bashing on the door freaking out. I heard the banging and went and opened the door for him, he was peeking eye wild with stress and whatever was in his smoke, He thanked my I laughed and he ran up the stair backstage and Doc is a tall guy he turned and ran out onto the stage and his head hit the lightrig lifting him off his feet. He landed flat on his back KO'd witha split head blood pissing out , he came to just got up and belted it out like nothing happend . The Angels would almost alway sit back after shows and have drinks with the staff, fun and shenanigans were had by all

When you realised what the crowd were saying was amazing haha The crowd participation was created by the fans and it just grew from there. Its now unaustralian to not say it If you ever hear "am I ever gonna see your face again?" By Australian law, you must shout it back. 😁

Years ago when our kids were in there early teens, we were out on a drive when this came on the car radio the wife and I yelled out the “phrase” and then remembered the kids in the back seat. They were wide eye and in shock from what we sang out.

Cant tell you how many times I ended up seeing the Angels live, they were a great rock band when i was growing up and this was the 1 song that no matter what, every member of the crowd at every concert would get involved and scream out the words.. Trust me on this one.. If ever you meet an Aussie anywhere at any time and say the words "Am I ever going to see your face again", I guarantee you, 100% you will get the same answer every time..

Used to have this play at blue light discos when I was kid in the 80s (dances run by the police in Australia). We used to get in trouble when we did the audience bit!. It was released back in 1977, classic Aussie rock!

Followed the Angels through many pub venues after 1976, I remember a time when the audience didnt yell out the chorus in the late 70s, it seems to come in, in the early 80s, but it just adds to the legacy of The Angels, lost count of the time I seen the Angels, part of the soundtrack of my life. Doc was a force to be reckoned with, such a powerhouse..never seen them as pop rock, that would have made Doc laugh, they were just pure rock!

The Angels have been an Australian staple since the late 70’s ….. Shadow Boxer, Coming Down, Marseille, I ain’t the one….. this song was written in memory of someone…. But someone called out in response to the words in concert one day …. And the response stuck to this Day….. heaps more Angels to check out ( another in a long line of Aussie Rock Bands)…👍.

At our high school discos in the late 80's early 90's, when this song come on, all the teachers except for 1 or 2 used to disappear, and the whole crowd used to sing the unofficial "chorus". It was awesome and hilarious.

Yep, this is an Aussie anthem alright 😅 The crude callback wasn't in the original song but became a key part of after years of gigs 😅 'Doc' Neeson was an absolutely electric frontman. No, this is a straight up rock song. No pop involved. Doc died in 2014 but if he was still alive, I think he'd be a bit miffed at your 'pop' comment 😛😂

The band formed in 1973 and AIEGSYFA was recorded in 1976 and is about grieving after the death of a friend. The response is lost in Australian Folklore while Doc said he first heard it at a gig in 1983 in Mt Isa, it had been making the rounds in Pubs well before that. I remember a Blue Light Disco (underaged disco supported by local Police for our OS friends) in 1982 where it was yelled out. Look up Puddles Pity Party singing it live in a gig in Australia. Although I am sure he knew about it the reaction is priceless. Oh, and please never refer to the Angels as Pop Rock... Damn, wars have been started for less. LOL

Angels were my first concert back in the 80’s at the old Hordern Pavilion in Sydney. A quintessential part of Aussie pub rock history. They filled live shows like this but excelled in pubs with a dance floor packed with drunken patrons bouncing off each other.

No stress in Australia about swearing in front of kids. They are taught to swear early and when it is appropriate to use. And this band is definitely not pop, it's pure Aussie rock. He is actually a very good singer. RIP Doc Neeson, another good one gone too soon

Even my Mother sang the crowd chorus, she who never swore normally, took immense pleasure in screaming that NWGFFO chorus at the top of her voice and laugh hysterically at the looks on our faces. Great memories..

An Aussie, so I remember seeing the Angels live, with Cheap Trick as the support/ second act. They performed this in the encore, but before doing so they brought Cheap Trick out on the stage, and made a big play of the crowd chant, and of course as part of the crowd obliged by shouting it louder and louder.

I was 18 in a pub in Qld when I heard this chant for the very first time.I too was like......what are they saying. It only got better from there. Classic aussie sing along. Good times💕

In 79 we would dance to their song Shadow Boxer. At the school dance. Doc (singer) passed away a couple of years ago.

Way back in the very early days you were an Angel's fan or an ACDC fan. Then everyone loved both, saw them in concert back in the day & everyone was standing on the chairs & stomping.

One of the best frontpeople Australia has ever seen. Dude unfortunately died recently, but Doc was one of the best Aussie frontpeople who ever lived. Hands down.

Recently went to concert in Perth, Western Australia and the Angels were on the play bill, crowd still get involved like this. (We may be a little older now.)

This was an anthem at one point or another in people's lives in Oz. Lol. Such a good song and still a great song that gets alot of air play. Love it 😀 No Secrets is the other song I love from the angels. Have a listen you'll love it.

AFAIK This song was written as a sad song after one of their friends died. However pub audiences misinterpreted the lyrics to mean that it was a sad break up song. So some drunk Aussies decided to cheer the song up to make it a happy break up song by adding vengeful shouting at the supposed ex-partner during the chorus. Lyrics as written by band "Am I ever going to see your face again" (no because you're dead, I miss you so so much) Lyrics as misinterpreted by crowd "Am I ever going to see your face again?" (You left me, I miss you so so much) Drunk addition by crowd "No way, get fucked, fuck off" (Ha! I'm over you, and stop stalking me you loser) It is a mark of gracefulness by The Angels that they just went with the crowd co-creation and didn't get precious over their memorial for their dead friend.

You’re spot on as always, Dom. The lead singer Doc Neeson was never a singer as such. In his life before being a musician, he was a sergeant in the army and had degrees in drama and film production. It was this sense of theatre and energy that he brought to the role of front man. The band had sophisticated lyrics and were brilliant to watch live. They supported bands such as AC/DC and were considered hard rock, The Angels have been cited by Guns n’ Roses, Cheap Trick, and Great White as having been influential on their own styles. The Angels are Aussie rock royalty. 🤘

growing up in melbourne as a teenager at that time was all about hanging out at the park drinking, smoking weed on the weekends and carrying on like animals lol, that and occasionaly visiting the various "blue light discos" which where held at local town halls by the police to keep kids off the streets lol, this was always a huge tune for all the kids to sing along too at those events ;)

Saw the Angels live - fabulous

OMG, I was 15 and snuck into the Raffles hotel in WA to hear these guys, and stood right next to 2 cops inside the doors, and the 3 of us were headbanging and singing "Am I ever gonna see your face again, NO WAY, GET FUC*KED, FU*K OFF". The cops had snuck off duty to catch the show. What an awesome night, coz Cold Chisel played at the Herdsman that night in Perth. Rocked the weekend away....Dayumnnn I'm old lol

This was my jam, when I was a teen I would go round the pubs of western Sydney seeing The Angels, Mentals, Radiators, Dragon etc, it was a great time.

The Angels were masters of involving their audience. I saw them a few times in pubs in the 80s in Brisbane and they rocked the house. I also got to see Cold Chisel in the late 70s at Cloudland in Brisbane, an iconic dance hall that was demolished in the middle of the night through nefarious circumstances. The 60s thru to the 80s were a mad time for Aussie music.

So true, Doc Neeson could never be accused of having perfect pitch, a wide vocal range or even the ability to consistently stay in tune. However, Doc and The Angels could whip any crowd into a frenzy and reduce them to a heaving mob. This is also the first time I have heard The Angels referred to as a pop band. However, I do get where you are coming from as this would be their poppiest song hahaha. Would love to hear your take on The Angels other 'Pop' classics such as Mr Damage or Take A Long Line.

Oz Pub Rock was a broad genre. You had AC/DC , Cold Chisel, Rose tattoo, The Angels to start with, all riffing off The Aztecs and the Easybeats, The loved ones, Masters Apprentices etc. The Angels were our Mods if anything, to equivalent to the Who. Rose tattoo were just brilliantly nasty, but had a slide guitar. probably the most bluesy. Chisel were Chisel, as you know. Farnsey was peripheral to the rock crowd until '86, even though he had been around for years. Then came Divinyls and Hoodoo Gurus and their mates, Mentals, Renee, although she had been around nearly as long as Farnsey, and loads of bands, and you can quote me on that. and More, and still more. Southern River Band would probably be the latest Torch bearers of good old Australian Pub Rock and/or Roll.
