Thankfully I was the on stage camera guy providing close up shots of Eric and the band that were put up on the screens for the crowd. I was right between Eric and the keyboard player so I had the best spot anywhere for this song. It was so loud and powerful - practically a religious experience. "House of the Rising Sun" is an old song. Nobody knows how old for sure, nobody knows who wrote it. There are recordings of it going back to the 1920's at least. This band, the Animals, are from the UK, and they were one of the bands that blew up in the US in 1964, after the Beatles hit, along with the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Kinks and others. They called it the British Invasion. The singer, Eric Burden, he was versatile. Maybe you've heard a track he released with a later group, War. The song is "Low Rider," it came out in 1975, and it's been huge ever since. "All -- my -- friends -- know the Low Rider. The Low -- Ri -- der -- gets a little higher." That's the same little English guy singing. Eric Burden. He was still working a few years ago, in his 70's. Might still be out there singing, I don't know. Just checked some of the other comments, I see there are some other Eric Burden fans in here.

I would have to guess it would date back to the mid-late 1800s based on contextual clues. Gambling being big in New Orleans? Smacks of Mark Twain, riverboat gambling times. Pre-temperance, so brothels would be more widespread. Economic hardship of reconstruction south would motivate a lot of people to be in this type of situation, so it'd be a relate-able song.

A great and very old song with many versions. This version by The Animals is about prostitution (The House where the singer was raised being one of ill repute), gambling, and the internal battle for the soul of a young man.

Yes it's a traditional song about 200 years old or more, though it seems it might have originally been "the ruin of many a poor girl" - which kind of makes more sense.

Love the old footage. See how minimum the instruments were but the sounds these magnificent musicians got out of them. Bohnam of Zeppelin is a prime example, the sounds he got out of a basic drum set!

I was born in 1964. This song epitomizes the 60s as far as I'm concerned. May I say, that i find you such an impressive young man. What impresses me is how open you are to the music of our generation. You recognize talent when you hear it. You talk about my generation using true musical instruments, and talent. It is true. Lastly I'd like to say that I stumbled upon your channel ( probably highlighted due to some algorithm), I was depressed. Your reactions pulled me out of despair. Thank you for what you do.

If memory serves, the earliest surviving recording is by Leadbelly, a Blues singer from the 1920s. This was likely a song sung in the early to mid 1800s originally on plantations by slaves, and the soulful melody and lyrics only increase that likelihood - especially given the lyrics before censors got in the way of things. A youtube video containing the Leadbelly recording is available.
@imkluu
@imkluu 4 жыл бұрын
@@danielbooth3459 I think you are mistaken as to it being sung by plantation slaves as the tune goes back further than slavery in America to the 16th century in England, about a bawdy house. It was also sung by miners in the American Appalachia in the early 1900's so it was not likely once a slave song.
@danielbooth3459
@danielbooth3459 4 жыл бұрын
@@imkluu if it can be traced back to the 1600s, then it could easily have been sung by slaves in the 18th and 19th century. However, I was not aware it could be traced back that far. Kudos on the research. On the other hand, I had heard about the miners. Regardless of the songs origins, it's an amazingly powerful song about regret and redemption. Leadbelly's soulful rendition is stripped down and bare, while The Animals' version is full to the brim with musical accompaniment that really makes you feel every nuanced emotion of the Speaker (as in poetry, not the singer/ writer, but the character) in the song.

This song was so great because of the misfortune of their organ player not getting to the studio when they were recording it. The studio organ player filled in but he could not read music so he played by ear. This resulted in the organ being played a half note behind the rest of the band and they were going to redo it until they heard how great it worked on this song so they released this version. after which they made sure to do i this way in concert.

So much of the music from this era was brilliant and most of the population can still sing along with it 50 years later. The effect it had is hard to describe but even my mother who'd had 4 kids went out and stood on the road side by herself to get a glimpse of the Beatles the first time they toured. Conveniently us kids were in school so there was no way we were going to stop her and she certainly didn't do it for our benefit.

Talking about a singing voice...this one can kill in a metaphorical way for sure. I am left speechless, as well as for the keyboard player. No one should assume that Musicians nowadays are better or even as good, they just have more technology at hand. The Animals probably lived die hard for their music between sunrise and dawn, no mobile phones, no twitter to distract them :-)

1964, what a year that was! The Beatles opened the floodgates to America that year and the British Invasion was on. As huge as the Beatles became early on, being the pioneers of that genre, those other British groups, the Animals being one of them, were big too. They were able to capture some of the limelight bc they had music of their own to offer. Rollingstones had a song called TIME IS ON MY SIDE, which to this day, takes me back to a rainy morning in my freshmen yr of high school, as I'm scampering to my 2nd period class, clear across campus. Whoever had their little transistor radio on, running alongside me in the rain to her class, that song remains embedded in my memory even today. House of The Rising Sun became a hit but was relegated lesser status bc the Beatles owned the American airwaves then, song after song, album after album! Couldn't get enough of it!
