I love the comments: "this is the history of Rome not Italy" Why does this historical revisionist argument comes up only about Italy? what about Sweden? are people going to argue they have nothing to do with the Vikings? what about modern China and ancient China? The Romans literally called themselves Italic, the political campaign of emperor Augustus had "Italia" at the center, he unified Italy itself, are we going to ignore the historical and genetic evidence of modern Italians being descendants of the Romans? what about the millennia of history between the two? It's just an excuse to deprive Italy of it's legacy and it's done out of pure envy.

Angus Yang Not really, pasta was actually discovered indipendently in both countries and in Italy derived from a Roman meal(it seems contradictory to my previous statement but it wasn't really the pasta we think of today) while pizza was rendered possible by the introduction of tomatoes, there's also a nice legend about it

Very good article, and I think I wasn't clear, I did not mean to say that Italians invented pasta, simply that, as the article mentions, it was probably not imported from China, it's a dish so ancient thats a bit difficult to track down to its origin and it was likely discovered indipendently in many places; like fire or the wheel

There's nothing to say the Flavian' dynasty made Italy more "diverse and multicultural". One could argue that for the military during the severan dynasty that was the case, but the only large influx of people into Italy since the initial settlments of celts, greeks, and italics was the Lombards that came later.

Roman History seems to be the history of the human race in a weird way. *Romulus and Remus being Cain and Abel stand ins, an allegory for our constant aggression against one another due to one having the things the other wants, and our desire and willingness to kill to have it or deny them the enjoyment from it. *The overthrow of Monarchy and the end of one man rule as a popular system of government, and the subsequent hatred for that system (much like the modern world), with a form of democracy as it's replacement *That democracy being characterized by the 'rule' (they had no real power) of two people (think President and Vice President), and a society divided between the haves/wealthy/politically powerful (uber rich/elites/patricians-who were Rome's equivalent of 'Old Money') and the lower classes (the poor/the marginalized/plebians) *The eventual degradation of that system into those who can arouse the most angry mobs to 'beat up' political opponents being the ones who can get elected (internet and social media flame wars between people on both sides of political debates these days) *People turning back to an altered form of one man rule, albeit one couched in democratic process and subsequently being more open to the idea, having reached a conclusion that a revolving door of leaders leads to national instability and civil distress (modern Presidents seeking to use the democratic process to become Presidents for life) I find it strange that the political history of the Roman Empire seems to line up so eerily with human history tbh

@@wizzya9966 It is both Roman and Greek. The title Roman came from the state itself. Sort of how americans work: "latin-american, african-american" etc. The byzantines were Greco-Romans. But now that the Roman Empire fell the title "Roman" fell along with it. However, the various ethnic groups like the italians, greeks, etc that all ruled the empire's legacies all live on. At least, this is how I view the title of someone being Roman. I never saw it as an ethnic group.
