or the jacobites and bonni Prince charlie. 1745-46. jacobites was the Scottish clans that faught for our independence and our rightfull king but no one ever mentions the jacobites uprising. they play a huge part in Scottish history just as much as Wallace and bruce. but it's funny how the jacobites rebel army was named the 45 and in 2014 only 45% voted yes and was named the 45. 45 is a fighting number

Correction: Jacobites weren't exclusively Scottish clans, but a large number of Jacobites did come from the Catholic Highland clans. Jacobites were just supporters of the Catholic Stuart Dynasty: the name coming from the Latin for James II & VII (Jacobus). There were many Jacobites and Jacobite sympathisers across the British isle in Ireland and England as well as in Scotland. It's interest to discover that the Government troops that fought against the Jacobites in 1745 were actually Scottish from the lowlands, whom were primarily Protestant and had a distinct culture compared to the Highlanders.

one big note that's a pretty sad part of history was the scottish purge after the 1740's Jacobite revolution, after the battle that killed over 4000 Scots the king of england didn't want that to happen again so they executed many leaders of the clans and some of the clans leaders were all killed, the Gaelic language was outlawed entirely, the carrying of a broadsword was made illegal and the kilt was even outlawed I believe But it was that purge that completely killed off a lot of scottish culture, just like the world wars purged the old German culture from Germany

By the 1500s, Gaelic was still spoken by a large portion of the population, however the predominant language was Scots, not English. French was more common than even English at one point. It was the suppression from England that resulted in the massive decrease in Gaelic speaking people and those living in the North, and enforcement to learn English over Scots. Also, given the superior economy, quality of life and different societies & ideologies to the rest of the UK, is it any wonder they support independence at around 60% in most unbiased polls.

cjonesabc Nope, YouGov isn't biased and they find that Scots don't support independence. There are plenty of unbiased polls that show results on either sides. I also think it would be wise to realise that even YouGov stated there is a growing support in urbanised cities like Abderdeen, Livingston, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Dumfermline all in support of independence.
@sicgc7658
@sicgc7658 7 жыл бұрын
cjonesabc But hey, I guess if it shows they support independence then it must be wrong! Even though Scots voted for a party with a manifesto call a referendum if it is needed. Even though Scots have overwhelmingly voted to remain in the EU and many, as said, support the EU over the UK; and will not make any stance over the referendum until it is either happening or Brexit negotiations have initiated to find our standing right?

You missed out the fact that Scottish inventors can be credited with the majority of the most important inventions of the past 200 years. Penicillin, steam engine, television, telephone, waterproof materials, tarmac, rubber tyres, bicycles and refrigerators. A Scottish science team were the first people to ever successfully clone a living being (Dolly the sheep) and a Scottish man theorised and founded modern economics. A Scottish man discovered the ability to use fingerprinting in criminal investigations and also another Scottish person theorised the ability to use DNA in the same way. Such a pity that we’re now a downtrodden colony of England. For such a small country, with a population of only 5.5million, we’ve had a HUGE influence on the world.

Ryan Mckie476, when I was researching the history of my Scottish roots, I saw that after the Viking ages, Norway claimed some those Northwest peninsula and islands in Scotland. At that time most of the highlands and lowlands were united under the kingdom of Alba/Scotland. So they said, let’s get them back. So I guess they declared war on Norway. There was the Historic Battle of Largs in where Scotland won. Scotland invaded the rest of Norway’s land and then the Norwegian king died, and the heir of the Norwegian throne made piece with Scotland and gave Scotland its stuff back.

But the independence wars, Jacobite uprisings and, genuine hate of England and the fact we also support whoever plays England in a match of football never the less when Westminster voted for the removal of nearly all Scottish regiments such as the Black Watch, the Gordons and the Cameronians each time we were in uproar does that prove that we adore being British or the does it prove we dislike England and Britain over what they decided for us rather than what we decided for ourselves.
@louisgallacher9555
@louisgallacher9555 7 жыл бұрын
Peter as much as I agree with you about how the English ruined the regiments, the history is still spoke of and many of the regiments do still exist and operate such as the 52nd Lowland Regiment which still operate to this day, also the history is still with the army especially the Royal Regiment of Scotland where the 3rd Battalion of the Black Watch still operates thankfully under 3 SCOTS. So I have to disagree with you on the histories being ripped from the books per say. As for the tartans what you state is entirely untrue Stewart tartan is formally used by all of the SCOTs however they still posses their previous tartan as does the 3rd battalion of the Black Watch which they wear upon ceremony.
