This movie came out in 2002 by DreamWorks Animation and is a ground-breaking movie in terms of animation. The use of two animation techniques mixed together was very unique back then and I feel like more people need to know this.
I take no credit for this video, all rights belong to DreamWorks Animation. This is a video from the DVD's special features that goes in-depth into the making of this film. I wish to share it's information with people who don't have access to it.

I say so myself. The old traditional animation will always be better than digital animation. Especially better than the stuff we get nowadays.

It's so sad how at that time they were putting lots of efforts into both 2D and 3D animation to prove that it could be pushed over the limits while now they're just like "meh just put a green screen it'll do the job" and I just find it sad...

Thank you for correcting a comment that's four years old. Also, the new movie is just regular CG, not the awesome hybrid that the original was, which is what I wanted to see more of.

Spirit: Untamed came out today. I sincerely wish they put that much passion into Untamed as they did its predecessor 19 years ago. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron was and still is a breathtaking piece of animated cinema.

Watching this after watching the 'Spirit; Untamed' trailer. The original Spirit has so much life to it and it's depressing watching it get a reboot filled with squishy 3D animated characters who have no life to them. Not to mention how watered down the concept is compared to how rich the original film is in all aspects. This Spirit is the only one I care about.

This was the first “tradigital” movie made and the last 2D film Dreamworks produced. It makes me so sad to see what CGI and 3D animation, while being a revolutionary and versatile style, has turned animation studios into sellouts, Dreamworks included. Spirit was and still is such a unique production in so many ways. All the people who worked on this together made something truly special. I’m glad we got something like this, but never again will there be a movie like Spirit.

The video doesnt explain it. They hint at it but dont really say how much was 3d and what was 2d. It looks like almost all of spirit's animation was roto-scoped. Twice as much work twice as $. Pick 2d or 3d. Iron giant is great example of 90% 2d and 10% 3d. It all blended together well. Prince of Egypt is amazing. Lots of $ but soooo worth it. Beautiful.

@@heatherandtimsharp The 10% CG number sounds about right from what I remember working on Spirit. There were a couple of shots where we transitioned from the CG horse into the hand-drawn horse where I traced about a dozen frames from the CG run cycle (which itself was based on the hand-drawn cycles I animated in pre production) to do the blend between the two. And then there were CG stand-in models (not moving) to provide some drawing reference for some of the camera spin shots. I do remember one shot during the rodeo where we ran the CG horse through he layout as reference, but then I changed it a whole bunch when I drew over it. This made it easier than the shots in the Beauty and the Beast ballroom or Hunchback, which had much less perspective reference. There was obviously no rotoscoping though, in the sense of tracing live action footage of horses, and virtually no rotoscoping of any CG element either, like I said, only a few frames here and there to do transitions between the two techniques, and some layout reference. It's mostly just old fashioned drawing.
