Luxury shopping in London is great, especially shopping at Gucci, Dior, Chanel & Louis Vuitton!! You never know what you'll find on a luxury shopping spree!! I love the new Bottega Veneta Teen Pouch in chlorophyll and my dream Fendi Peekaboo Mini with the embroidered flowers!! Another highlight was the Louis Vuitton Papillon Trunk Bag - they still don't have any Louis Vuitton Nano Speedy models in stock. I like how the luxury community mocks people for buying Gucci, yet their quality is miles better than Chanel. I almost bought in to Chanel’s ‘higher echelon’ but after seeing countless videos by you and Super Dacob, i opted out in getting anything Chanel. I feel Celine or Dior could be a better more chic alternative.

I dont buy Gucci anymore since i know his widdow got him killed, only because he wanted to get divorced from her. I heard in a documentary that she still gets 1 million each year out of the Gucci sells and lives (now out of prison again) a life in luxury. Wont support that, no matter how nice one of their bags is.

Thank you for speaking out. If a house is going to charge $8,000+ for bags, they FOR DAMN SURE should make sure the quality matches the price. Hermès, Bulgari, Fendi have better quality IMHO.

@@kaledonia1983 Yes. I bought last years caviar Boy saddle bag and it does look fine. I would not order special leathers from them anymore. Their special leathers are gorgeous. Just not practical for everyday wear and tear. To make a bag like the 22 in a metallic leather is just stupid. Metallic leather is very prone to wearing. Always. Even if it is clear coated. Add a chain strap that will rub against the leather and a soft unstructured style where the leather will bend and fold over and over again will only cause rapid problems. And apparently it did. And to have terrible working conditions at their price point is appalling.

By the way... what's the right thing to do? I would buy only preloved or vintage, you pay less money, the quality is better, you can find items in really good condition and you're not part of helping Chanel to make more profit; This current strategy of Chanel won't last, this will go down the hill very fast if the quality is so bad and so many people have issues with their new bags.

…but some of the customers are. They keep buying in spite of the mediocre quality of the bags, the ridiculous way they are treated by customer service and of course the ridiculous prices. In spite of all the complaints and issues, they keep buying 😅 I feel like they deserve what they get at this point 😅

My husband bought a pair of designer dress pants 25 years ago and they are still in perfect condition. Luxury items should last a lifetime. The terrible thing is that as individuals we have the option to NOT buy from Chanel and buy from other luxury brands where quality and craftmanship is still their number one priority.

It was probably the material, not the brand. Silk or satin is designed to last a lifetime whereas cotton only lasts a few years and it's worn out.

When I worked for LVMH I was 'encouraged' to see my team (over 25 people) as pawns, to make them constantly feel that they could 'do better', not to encourage them etc. I ignored all that and gave them a great working environment, when stress arrived before the shows I stopped everyone and we had a party for an hour, then back to work. If an employee was feeling low or sad I gave them shopping or movie time to boost their morale. I almost had no-one calling in sick but many of the other teams had many sick days. We had fun but we worked hard and I was often 12 hours a day at the office to make everything go well and would go in six or seven days a week. I was constantly battling with HR over my unwillingness to 'obey' their stupid rules. I even worked briefly for Vuitton but the conditions were terrible. I still have an ex assistant who works there and she cries at how much worse her job is to what it was with me.

I had a totally different experience with good managers, good directors, a respect of the weekly working time and holidays and a very good working atmosphere with a lot of advantages. May be it could depend on a managing director or a country but not the whole group.

Yes it does take one bad boss to make your life hell. I left my two last good jobs because of narcissistic team mates who made work feel like work and not pleasure anymore. Both were bitter people who needed to put others down to feel good about themselves. Instead of battling or complaining I just left. There are lots of good jobs for good people. Thank you for sharing this very disturbing news. I bought my first Chanel seasonal bag last year September there was an issue with the shoulder strap and the SA right away said she will order me another one direct from Paris. I received the new bag perfect condition. I too questioned the SA on how could such an flaw could pass quality inspection. She was kind to say she could not answer but apologize. Now after hearing the news I now understand why quality is an issue. This is clearly a human rights issue the French government should look into this. Here in Canada I paid 6300 for a season flap bag a lot of money. So I would expect the workers to be treated like royalty for creating such beautiful pieces.

People should protest Chanel already. I keep hearing complains about the quality and yet they continue buying it. Chanel was never on my wish list, same for Hermes. I just do not like their bags designs and seriously do not understand why are they so popular. I prefer buying luxury items that are less on social media but higher quality such as Bvlgari, Marni, Margiela, Tory Burch, Off white and etc I also love Rebecca Minkoff, the two bags I am using for more than 7 years on daily basis and they are still in mint conditions.

My bestie bought Chanel sunglasses last year with a chain attached to it, really pretty: leather through the links, pearls, double Cs, you get the idea. Round about € 1,400 I think. After wearing it twice(!) a pearl AND one of the double Cs dropped off the chain. And I'm like: what the.....?! She returned it and got her money back but the lesson learned is: Don't buy Chanel. Something's obviously very wrong with their quality management.

This is why I only buy vintage Chanel now. It costs less and is much better quality. That’s a win win. I will not contribute to horrible abusive bosses and terrible working conditions. I feel some of the responsibility for Chanel becoming just another fast fashion brand is because of Karl Lagerfeld. He was so prolific with his creativity and his designs were so popular that the owners of Chanel exploited everything he did. He was a gushing tap of gold for them. So greed got the better of their discrimination and led them too far from the original ethos of Coco Chanel. I wonder if things might have been different if somebody at the top of the company could have put the brakes on a little bit. I don 't feel the house of Yves St. Laurent fell into this trap while Yves St. Laurent was still alive.

Karl Lagerfeld brand used to have decent quality too. Since he passed away the quality is gone completely. I bought a bag from 2019 and the leather is still in good condition. However I bought a wallet in 2021 and my oh my, the leather color faded in 3 months. Í don’t know what happen but I guess it was made of plastic not PU leather even. The brand is dead to me now. And it goes on sale almost all year round. You can buy a bag with a price of a zara jacket (80€) I have a zara bag that is half the price of my KL wallet and still holds on well after 2 years of daily use. I changed from wearing designer bags to zara bag after this incident. My wallet is happy and I’m satisfied 😂❤

I so agree. Vintage Chanel is stunning quality and when I started to buy Chanel vintage handbags my friends were laughing at me some 10 yrs ago. Today models like Lady Di from 1992 can go up to 10000 € and I must have paid about 1000 € in 2012/2013.

Keep speaking your truth. You have a pure heart. I adore all fashion and beauty! I watch several makeup "influencers" that I trust and am inspired by. When someone goes to the movies, they read a review to see if it's their vibe. If you want to buy a car, you read a review. We have free will to make our own choices however, reading a review and getting a second opinion is a smart business move. So, to the naysayers, "purchase at your own risk " and demons be gone! Romina, thank you for this. You’re a noble person. I watch KZfaq videos where Chanel bags are shown - both from inside stores and from outside stores through the windows. I was shocked that I could see the poor quality (the sheen of the leather not being right, the stitching not highlighting any suppleness of the leather, a certain stiffness apparent where there should be none, etc.). Even right through the window and from a distance. Adding to this the very poor working conditions in Chanel factories… I’m more than shocked. Hopefully, many people will stop supporting Chanel. ❤❤❤

I honestly have a bag I CONSTANTLY get compliments on. It's a bag from Target . I've had it 20 years. When Target bags are better quality than an 11K bag... Nothing like a 1900s sweat shop conditions. I now will NEVER EVER purchase a Chanel anything from store. Pre loved from a period when they cared will be just fine with me.

Me and my friends fr Malaysia are not happy w Chanel bag qualities . Customer service is also bad when items has faults and the staff behave like it’s customers fault for causing the faults . Chanel will even keep your items for many mths just for small repairs and the repair is a bad job. Lots of money is charged to customer for small repairs that’s even not customers faults . The cases are , Leather chain straps disintegrate on the bags when it’s kept in closets , stitchings come apart at the straps when holding up the body of the bag w items inside , zippers on nylon waist bag pouches becomes faulty after some wear 😢 LV won’t dare treat their customers like this when they want repairs / refunds .

Don't get me wrong, like you, I love their aesthetic and products but in my case , only to look at. I would never give the exorbitant amount of money for their clothes or bags or accessories ( those especially are overpriced and bad quality ) . As for the workers and their treatment, I'm pretty sure that is not an isolated case and happens with other brands. But that's just my guess.

The idea that we can’t make a difference bc we are just one person or even a small group is the issue. Every time we spend our money we are making a vote for the future. I remember a decade ago trying to find a variety of organic foods and you would be lucky to find one organic option in each category. Now we see increasing brands and variety expanding bc demand is there. We stop buying, they WILL feel it.

I have over 200 vintage bags (I did have a LOT more) collected when no one wanted 'vintage' as it was 'old' and 'used'. I have some Gucci's and one lovely Kelly type bag in lizard with gold locks that I paid pennies for. I have woven bags, embroidered bags, some old Gucci and Dior but they are in great condition ofter sometimes 60 to 80 years, having been used and worn and the leather stands up to all that. I recently bought a burgundy monogram Dior bag from the 60's, impecable. They don't make them like they used to that's for sure.

We must strive to keep big companies accountable, for their over priced products, but even more for the way they are produced, they must be held accountable for the way they treat their employees...and this is valid for any company from Zara to Chanel. So we'll done Romina, I totally support and share your views. And for the record: I do love Chanel and I m fortunate enough to have some pieces. However, I haven't bought anything since 2019. I agree. I sold my 22s caramel mini (yes, I know), because the leather felt very dry and unconditioned, almost like it would start cracking and peeling after a few wears. The leather quality is sooo important! But yes, it’s now becoming common knowledge that many Chanel staff are treated poorly… pls be kind to your SA’s!

The right thing to do is to stop buying Chanel. I became disillusioned with the brand after having an issue with my Brown 22 Bag (second season release) and they would not do anything to help me since 1) I was outside the 14 Day Return window (I didn’t use the bag until 2 months after purchase due to giving birth) and 2) The quality manager declared it was normal wear & tear - for the leather to start wearing away like in the pictures you showed. One time use 🤯 I can understand why people got mad at you and Super Dacob for exposing the 22 Bay quality issues. Sad, but true. People don’t want to think about how someone else is being exploited for their own gain. Luxury buyers may also think that by spending this amount of money, surely the workers must be properly-compensated and have safe working conditions. But no, not in Chanel’s case, at least not with their handbags. I used to think I could buy these bags to enjoy and pass down to my children. But I think I’m better off selling my 19s and 22 Bag acquired during the pandemic and taking my money (and losses) elsewhere - to Hermès, Loewe, and anyone else using actual leather on their bags.

It's worst than fast fashion because if you buy something from Shein, you can always return it. Honestly, it's a known fact that Chanel produces bags in sweatshops like the ones in Prato. And when I saw my first boutique piece, I was like---yah it's not far off from the fakes. I think we can't discount the superiority filled dopamine response when you spend that much on anything. The high is addictive ---I would imagine.

I have diagnosed, myself with a mental problem that I feel inadequate unless I carry a Chanel bag. You are quite correct it is all about dopamine. My mother was a gambling addict, so I believe it is in the genes. I am trying to wean myself off them, I am 53 and have been addicted for over 30 years.

Thank you, Romina, for starting this conversation. It is very unfortunate that luxury companies like Chanel are becoming corporations driven by profits rather than staying what they were when they were created - fashion houses. The same is true with LV. In the US where LV opened a factory, the quality of the bags suffers because workers are in the same conditions like in Chanel's factory. High turnover, poor pay, and terrible working conditions lead to poor quality products. No surprise that American customers prefer used LV bags made in France over LV bags made in the US.

i don't think it will change until it impacts their bottom line. People are still buying the bags. It kinda seems like overall working at chanel is a miserable experience. Also with the commission changes i wonder if there will be an exodus of SAs to other brands.

I don't know how many people know this but a lot of the italian factories have been purchased by the chinese. So it if can be done there if can happen I would think in France. The name of the game is money and chanel knows people will continue to buy their products.

Romina I'm so happy you talked about this and I hope more and more people will realize that all that glitters is not gold. This is not only about Chanel, also about so so many other luxury brands. I live where an Italian luxury brand was founded, a friend of my mom works for it... she's going through all the things you said, she even has to clock in and out when she has to go to the bathroom... her fingers are almost paralyzed too.

I just purchased my first Chanel lambskin mini flap last week and now I’m a bit scared since I haven’t carried it yet. I previously owned two Chanel WOCs- one from 2019 and another from 2022. They were both caviar and the one from 2022 felt like plastic and not luxurious. Edit to add: If true, the article is terrifying. How dare Chanel treat their employees this way.

I can explain this. Either they use an extremely slim slice of lambskin (full grain is the whole skin taken from the lamb. Hermes use full grain. The full grain can be slices into many slices like a cheese. The thinner slice the more fragile and break. The second alternative is that they mix milled lambskin fibers with glue and then spray the bay with a spray that will make it look like leather. It will peel off the bag and leave a suede like surface. No bag that is not full grain is luxury quality in my opinion. The workers being abused doesn’t cause these leather quality issues. It’s Chanel wanting to save money sacrificing quality. It’s best not to have too many bags. But one and use it every day. If it breaks within 3 years you can get your money back with the support of European consumer laws. If you buy a bag and only use it once in a while you’ll never know what quality it is before it’s to late to get your money back.

It completely makes sense that there are so many issues with the items because of the poor workers and the conditions they are working in. This company is just gone COMPLETELY tasteless and they still expect there customers to fork out the most ridiculous amount of money for there bags. I truely hope this all catches up to the big bosses and that there will be a complete overhaul of changes. But we’ll have to see it to believe it. Also i usually comment on each video of yours Romina and i completely forgot to leave a comment for your horrible mugging experience you had. I am so so sorry this happened to you and for this to have happened twice now! Absolutely scary and disgusting. I’m so glad you yelled out and your bag is ok! Romina, you and others posting legitimate concerns with Chanel's quality control are not ruining its reputation. Chanel are doing that themselves by taking an eye off the ball. You are not being unfair about it and Chanel would do well to heed the issues and investigate their manufacturing process. It seems that sadly prices are rising in inverse proportionality to quality.

Yeah... that's absolutely 100% bonded leather. I have been done with chanel even though i love their bags so much. At this point, even carrying chanel feels gross due to how i feel about the company, especially now after hearing this. MINIMUM WAGE?! they make bottom dollar for a billion dollar company?! This is so sad. I saw Dacob's video, but thank you for sharing your point of view as well - it is always so on point and relatable. I do not own any Chanel bags in my collection a the moment but recently I went to a Chanel boutique here in Brazil to try on the Chanel bag the always caught my attention (even though people say it is not relevant anymore): the Boy Bag. And oh god, why did I do it? I was a crazy moment. The sales associate was super nice to me, the bag was perfect (from my quick examination), black caviar leather with silver metal hardware and in the "regular"/medium size. I tried it on and it was like a match made in heaven, I still think about it until this very moment. But the price is INSANE. It is cheaper to buy an ostrich leather bag from LV (which is a beautiful exotic leather in my opinion) than buying that brand new boy bag (and I am not even talking about a classic flap). I am still very confused and having this "itch" after the Chanel bug got me. But after hearing about topics like this it really makes me think about spending this amount of money on a company that does not respect their employees. Do you think that this "itch" will go away? I love your content Romina, you are the best! I always get super excited to see a new video of yours pop up! ✨😁

Even back in 2013 they were having issues. SAs were snobby and kept taking bags out to show me, with flaws. I thought the bags were more available for purchase cause they knew they wanted them sold because of the flaws.

I bought a vintage Chanel bag 5 years ago and re-sold it almost immediately as it just wasn't for me. I never really connected with the brand. I feel so badly for those who do though.

Very interesting article! It is horrible that the workers have poor work conditions and the boss at the factory dismisses them instead of fixing them. I tried to look at the article but you have to subscribe. I hope the workers bring up their safety issues maybe as a group with the right agency/ies even though the name of the subcontrated company/factory is listed in the article, hopefully they have those in France. Honestly I don't think Chanel will take notice unless the factory gets charged and fined but again I don't know what the health and safety rules are in France. Thanks for sharing Xx

This is obiously terrible, but I dont think is the main cause of all the defects. Cheap materials, are in my opinion, the easiest explanation on all the quality issues. I live in a town that is mainly focus on leather goods, and these are the kind of things you see in poor quality materials… but a bag like that in here costs like 25 dollars 😅 not thousands

HI Romina When I saw your last video about being mugged, I thought it was really brave of you to bring it into this public place, When you talked about what happened at the bus stop, it reminded me about a campaign called "Get Me Home Safely' which is about workers in the night time economy getting home safe and sound especially when there is little or no public transport late at night. I've just watched this video and again you are brilliant for raising this issue because employers have a responsibility here. Luxury has to mean more than product quality. It has to include how workers are treated in pay, terms and conditions. I really hope lots of people watch this and start asking questions. We can all appreciate craftsmanship, creativity, beauty, heritage but that needs to include fair work and how people should be treated decently. Thanks again. Great vlog.

The cracking issues could still happen in real leather. It looks like they’re using a very thick coating of acrylic/plastic to standardize their leather and that this coating is cracking and peeling. Whether or not the material underneath the coating is leather or not it’s a hard to tell from the pictures but I wouldn’t rule it out being leather just because it has cracking issues. It’s more likely that they’re using too heavy of a coating on the leather and that this coating is cracking under pressure because it’s plastic.

Hi Romina! Thank you so much for making videos about this topic. I saw your other videos too about the bag you bought that had lots of quality issues. Sad to hear that the factory workers have such poor working conditions. Here is how I'd do if I'd be a new customer at Chanel entering into the brand. I wouldn't buy any bag or leather item brand new. I'd go to boutique with both beauty and fashion and I'd buy a fragrance (N5, N19, Bleu de etc) or other beauty item (lip balm, skincare etc.) to have the store experience at least once. I'd prefer Paris Rue Cambon 31 if not too crowded or other larger boutiques such as the one in Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. In terms of bags and other leather items I'd only consider the pre loved market. I hope you have a great week!

Interesting and pertinent comments and reporting Romina. High prices for inferior, luxurious goods, with far too many quality issues. TBH I don’t own any Chanel items, but if I were to buy, I would most certainly only invest in preloved pieces, as these seem to be the best quality. It’s also truly shocking to hear about the working conditions for the people who work there….just dreadful 😮 As others have already mentioned, there are other brands that are just as desirable and appear to be of a much better quality and standard of goods that I would rather support. It is important to raise these issues and share your thoughts and comment on such things….especially with such high price points. Keep up the good work Romina….regardless of the negative comments😊Your hair looks fabulous by the way 😘

Hi Romina! Wow, that's a lot to digest! It comes at a time when just on Monday, I took out my tweed sequined bag after not using it all winter and guess what? It has gold metallic threads streaming down the front of it! I have no idea where this came from. The bag is barely 2 years old and I baby it like a newborn. Very discouraging! I think the answer to this is to buy pre-loved vintage bags in good condition and then not pay all the money for them that we normally would part with when purchasing a new one. The quality should be there, right? But what year? Who knows I made up my mind that I was not going to get upset. I suppose I will enjoy it and then just buy another one? (used?) xoxox Karen

Great to see you're recovering from your ordeal Romina RM! IMO it's more likely that the erosion is from variations and weaknesses in the leather pelts (around the legs especially it's thinner and weaker so should never be put on a handbag handle and probably should be cut right out of the leather, they may have backed it with fabric to try to strengthen it). This comes down to cost-cutting, during this period there were massive shortages of leather, so they were trying to get more out of a pelt than they should have. As for the leather surface treatments such as with the Chanel22 the peeling, this would also be from the sudden loss of expertise. There was a massive loss of life in northern Italy among the workers from Covid19. The outbreaks happened in northern Italy and parts of France the first, and we didn't realise how much this affected certain localised areas. A lot of the factories are now Chinese-owned and Chinese workers were coming into Italy as well, which was part of the first spread of Covid19. Much of the pre production leather happens in Italy it's where the pelts are prepared, treated and dyed. Even if a small part of the assembly is done in France, it gets stamped 'made in France' legally. So the inappropriate usage, faulty dyeing and surface finishing of the leather reflects these sudden supply and expertise shortages that then applied IMO and are still being shaken out today. The factory working conditions of those in France are another layer to the problem. But also look at shrinkflation, which is also degradation of quality with cost-cutting, where once the hardware was gold plated for instance, we get 'gold tone' rubbish and it wears off in no time. They're selling an image, a dream and disillusionment has set in on top of the stratospheric prices. Plus you and I aren't in their target demographic. You can be sure that high flying VIPs will be immediately given a replacement and/or refund. But Chanel isn't interested in cultivating relationships with ordinary people or even salaried people. You see this time and again in their arrogant responses. Coco Chanel herself was a nazi sympathiser. Maybe we shouldn't be surprised if the factory conditions are as bad today as they were in her day (when she locked out the workers for asking for improvements in wages and work standards).
