We can’t avoid getting older, but we can reduce biological aging-the internal process that creates all the symptoms of the disease we’ve come to call aging. That means we can be one age chronologically, and another internally. I’m happy to use myself as an example of what we can do to our biology when we take out negative inputs and embrace positive ones: I’m 63 years old but my biological age is 43. We are living in a pivotal time for reframing the intersection of age and health. My passion for this topic combined with the incredible tools I’ve discovered led me to write my new book, Young Forever, so that I could share this life-changing information with others.
Today on the podcast, I’m so excited to sit down with my friend and business partner Dhru Purohit to talk about some of the key highlights from my research on longevity. Dhru and I dive into the best way to determine your biological age so that you can begin your own journey of aging backward with measurable data. Functional Medicine provides us with the perfect framework to prevent and heal dis-ease, with the exciting side effect of reduced aging.
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, Joovv, and BiOptimizers.

Keep them coming...very educational...I am 54 and I have been taking large amounts of supplements since I was 18... guys around me that are my age look and feel old "I hear it from them all the time". I've had people in the last few years that they think I'm around 35.....I personally feel like when I was 18....Now, I'm not saying that it was easy, rather hard to keep doing something that 99% of people I know aren't doing.

Thanks Mark. For the photochemical compounds that you mentioned, I open up the supplement capsules and pour a microdose into water and drink it during breakfast or dinner. About 1/4 of a capsule for each compound. Quercetin, resveratrol, fisetin, Diosmin, hesperidin, apigenin, curcumin, pycnogenol.

I completely agree that everyone should own and regularly ride a bicycle. It's a fun, eco-friendly way to get around, and it can positively impact longevity by improving cardiovascular health, strengthening muscles, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. So, making a bicycle your first choice for short distance travel is an excellent idea!

My husband and I were put on metformin AND lifestyle changes (for anti-aging) by a regenerative health doctor who we chose because he had attended the Functional Medicine Institute. That was over a decade ago and included regular testing of biomarkers and supplements to make sure we were getting enough vitamins and hormones. We've both tested 20 years or more younger on biological aging tests. So why does metformin/lifestyle need to be either or?

Dear Dr. Hyman if you read this comment, please consider researching the connection between orgasms/having sex and aging. The goal of the organism is to reproduce and have its offspring reproduce. I think that longevity genes exist to increase an organism’s chance to reproduce. Sex doesn’t occur as much during times of danger so longevity genes turn on to give the organism extra time to have a chance at reproduction? If an organism isn’t having sex, wouldn’t it make sense for longevity mechanisms to become activated? I can’t find any research on this topic. Perhaps in our evolutionary past lack of sex coincided with starvation so there was never an evolutionary pressure to evolve longevity genes that get activated directly by lack of sex. Or perhaps my view is flawed somehow? If someone has any ideas or information to share on this topic, please do.

Hi Mark Have you ever contacted Dr Wentz out in Utah. His team of Noble nominees has not only created the most innovative supplements out there. That team developed the tech for growing skin for injury replacement. He realized if he had used modern supplementation to nourish their research samples the cultures would have not survived. He realized they were the world's experts at cellular nutrition and developed their own products. Its an amazing story! They have a skin culture that has shown no signs of aging for decades. Can you interview him? Sonovieve where you were cured of Lymes is his creation.

To what extent do wrinkles relate to biological age? Or do wrinkles relate more to sun and other environmental exposure?

yeah, I tried looking to. the few in the area do not take my (most)insurance. probably because insurance companies dictate our healthcare, as opposed to functional medicine and doctors who promote it.

@@Robert.Marshall I have no insurance because of that. I hate to pay $400 or more a month and still have to pay a functional medicine doctor as well. Makes no sense. One day I hope the insurance companies will get on board. Don't think it's in my lifetime.

My vegan patients who are resistant to eating any meats look old… terrible skin and hair especially… not youthful look. Japanese docs like us also tell seniors to “eat yakiniku! Beef/ pork/ lamb” for prevention / slowdown the progression of Dementia.

I have watched Mark Hyman for many years! As a dedicated and studied Vegan I agree whole-heartedly with everything he says other than the few minutes he spoke about meat. I am certain he knows that many Vegan Dr's see numerous patients, so, we shall let him pass on that little bump. But we agree on so much more and I prefer to focus on that. In the US, we are sinking ourselves financially because of medical payments, individually and federally. It is the quality of the life we live which we focus upon. Most focus on disease. I choose to focus on health.

I know that what you say has value but I looked up your age and see that you are 63 and, with all due respect, and tho you're a good looking man, you do not look a day younger. If you say "it's what's inside that counts" that's simply untrue. Anything that ages the body, inside or out, is a measure to how much time we've got left.

The general over all health of people has declined. Overall life expectancy has declined in the past few years. Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences. There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications. Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks. Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods. Being thin is a sign of good health. Being over weight or obese is a sign of bad health. Poor diet, lack of exercise and obesity are contributing to high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
