The Anti Oloid is the latest weird rolling object I've become obsessed with. This strange form is surprisingly simple to create and rolls in a mesmerizing manner.

So according to (Dutch) wikipedia, oloids are very useful for mixing fluids and are now used in water treatment plants.

it probably wouldn't be the best thing to use 3d printed parts for this use case, considering lamination concerns.

I *really* doubt that they are. Water treatment plants use much more effective means of stirring sediment tanks, namely pumps. This bogus idea of stirring sewage with an Oloid was created by none other than Paul Schatz, creator of the Oloid. Surprise, surprise! I wonder how many units they have sold? Maybe some small ones, to homeowners, with a pond in their backyard.

About 25 years ago crisps companies gave away Tazos with their packets, small plastic discs with cartoon pictures on that have 8 notches cut into the outside edge so two or more Tazos can be slotted into each other to create structures. If you slot just two together you get an oloid you can simply blow on to make it roll along a flat surface. Looks great when you have a dozen of them all rolling along :)

I’m not sure an anti-oloid is really a thing in any reasonable sense. As long as you have two perpendicular arcs that smoothly transition from one to the other as they roll, and as long as weight is more or less evenly distributed, it doesn’t really matter what you pack in between. A ribbon-like form that conforms to that basic structure doesn’t necessarily make it something distinct.
@bjornolson6527
@bjornolson6527 4 жыл бұрын
Luke Fabis The previous oloid was a solid; this version is toroidal (lump vs donut). So, topologically distinct.
@vsm1456
@vsm1456 4 жыл бұрын
@@bjornolson6527 you can also drill a lot of holes in it which would make it topologically distinct even more, but would it change anything? I agree with this guy, all that makes oloid "work" are two arcs and a center-symmetric mass distribution, everything else serves for nothing more than aesthetics and structural rigidity

Never seen this before and it’s pretty rad. The first thought that came to mind was how much it resembles Salt Water Taffy that’s hand crafted by a confectioner in an old timey family candy shop... Specifically like the one in Pismo Beach California. Located on the corner of the busiest ntersection right next to the pier they make all their salt water taffy from scratch along with using super old and gigantic steel folding arms mixers. It’s actually a very pretty and soothing process to see the work. Having walls glass to close off and keep clean the kitchen, being able to see a glimpse of the process is genius.
