Chemical Warfare (2000): Before Skripal and Assad, there was P. W. Botha. This film examines the chemical and biological programme developed under the apartheid regime in the 1980s.

In the early 80's President Bohta was becoming paranoid about the growing unrest in the townships Project Coast was hatched to develop a biological and chemical warfare Program which would not only suppress the townships but act as a weapon in war. Project Coast involved 200 staff and cost one hundred million rand.
The Roodeplaat Research Base, 15 km north of Pretoria was the centre for the research. The labs were top secret and highly protected. Inside scientists were working on the ultimate chemical, biological weapon which would be small, undetectable and cause paralysis of the muscles or death. Dr. Goosen who headed the biological Program says 'the weapon Placed in the wrong hands could have killed millions'. However luckily the project was disbanded in the early 90's when power was handed over to Mandela.

I was a veterinary student at Onderstepoort at that very time (1980 to 1985). Roodeplaats Navorsings Laboratorium was just 10 minutes away. There were rumours at the time that several of our lecturers worked at both places. I am writing a memoir of that time.

Some topics that weren't touched here that were in past documentaries. Such as Basson was specifically trying to find viruses that would target a certain race of an individual. I'm glad the apartheid operation got shut down but that knowledge he had was shared with few other governments.

But the people you mention here are mix race. Cape Malay most of them identify as coloureds. As for the issue of Khoi the term came in late and it confuses me because even in apartheid days all ethnicity are named but not the Khoi

What an excellent video. The scientists who spoke out are very brave - speaking out about the shadowy operations of the government can’t be easy and I’m in awe of them for doing so. The world needs more people like them who told the truth even though they must have been a bit scared. Until about an hour ago, I knew nothing of Project Coast. It was watching a Vice documentary about the use of drugs in South Africa that I learned of this operation. I grew up in the rural Scottish highlands in the 80s and didn’t know anything about the trouble over there. Over here we had daily news of IRA attacks and that seemed scarier than anything else going on globally.

Basson has, of course, NOT been convicted of any crime in a court of law. His biased conviction by HPCSA (Health Professional's Council of SA) was also subsequently overturned by the courts. He is currently a well-known practising cardiologist.

Even during the first year's of Mandela's reign, he was preaching Reconciliation, busy allaying fears of the minorities as if us, African were at fault. Not here to compare who suffered the most, but the key difference between the French and South Africa is the focus after the ware was to rebuild, while South Africa still focuses on blaming others. Important to also note that without western influence, Africa would still have been a jungle. Who do you think discovered electricity, motor vehicles, computing, mass food production, and all the other technology that makes our civilized world possible? In conclusion, racism is purely an easy and cheap card to hide your own failures, no successful race uses the word racism, but rather focuses on self improvement.
