Hear The Archers as it used to be in the good old days. Listen to Dan, Doris, Christine, Phil, John Tregorran. Hear TOM Forest sing again and re-live your memories. This 1958 archive is from my private collection and out of copyright. stephenrbeet@gmail.com

Thank you for sharing this. My grandfather was an avid listener to the Archers from Day One. I remember my mother listening to it when I was a child in the late 60's early 70's. I then didn't listen to it until I was in my 30's and moved to the US. The Archers brought me a touch of home. I still listen to it every day. I would love to be able to listen to more archived episodes.

I used to listen to the Archers each afternoon at 4pm on my local station 3XC Timaru in the South Island of New Zealand. As a keen collector or radio nostalgia it was with considerable joy that I recently found 4 BBC discs from 1966 of 16 consecutive episodes. EPS 1372 - 1386. The discs are in pristine condition.

I am a Brit who has lived in the USA since 1970. I was born in the Midlands of England in 1942. The Archers were a part of growing up, every evening at 6:45 to 7:00 during the week then on Sunday morning was the Omnibus edition, the 5 episodes from the previous week. We were all loyal fans during the late 1940s and 50s even the 1960s. One of the original characters was an old curmudgeon Walter Gabriel, a lovable old farmer played by Chris Gittins, in the photo of the actors sitting around a table Chris was second from the left. Chris came from my home town in the West Midlands he was a keen member of our local Scout Troop, he would often drop in on a troop meeting at the church hall of St. Thomas’s. At Christmas he was always at the annual amateur variety show known as the Gang Show. Wonderful memories, happy times the war was over and we all looked forward to a new era. The Archers signature tune is solidly embedded in my memory.

I still find it hard to believe that the show has been a mainstay of British culture and is still going strong nearly 70 years after it was first broadcast. Wow. My grandma (I’m american) was like 5 or so when the show first began running (Born in mid to late January 1945)...she’s 75 now.

I believe mine is the largest private collection. The BBC found episodes on disc from the 50's and 60's which had been sent to Australia for overseas' broadcast. But they had nothing from the 70's at all. I recorded every episode from 1974 to 1980 and still have them. The BBC borrowed some episodes in the 90's to produce a cassette but lost all their copies except what they processed for the cassette. I have not processed many episodes because I don't have a reel-to-reel player at the moment. I have some on early cassette from 1974/75 and could make these available. I've already made a few compilations: "A tribute to Jethro Larkin", "The Carol Tregorran Story", "Young Adam", "A Tribute to Norman Painting" "Tom Forest Sings", "A Tribute to Jack Woolley". All these are on CD and available on request for a contribution to costs. StephenRBeet@gmail.com

Fabulous! The episode is from before I was born but I remember the characters voices from growing up in the '60s and '70s when the programme was a staple in the Dunkley household - my gran loved it. At some point I'd love to get hold of some '70s episodes - I'd love to hear Tom giving his wisdom at the start of an omnibus edition from those days. Thank you Stephen!

I am an Indian and my first language is not English, neither do I have formal English medium schooling. I listen to The Archers to keep me fluent in English. I was just curious to know how earlier recordings sounded like. This one brought emotions and few observations. The way people spoke has not changed much from those days. I do perceive little changes in intonation and accents. I wish this drama goes on forever. People like me will continue getting benefitted.

Every single episode of The Archers exists from 1959 to 1969, due to a discovery made in a BBC warehouse of crates containing transcription recordings that had been returned from abroad.

I have been listening to the Archers since the early '70's . It is 7 pm on the first day that the program is not broadcast due to the pandemic so I looked on you due - the reason I listen to radio four and thus my Archers addiction is I hate music , this episode is nothing but ! Other than the ''Old Parish Pump '' a couple of times I don't recall a single episode with songs - Bloody glad I was not alive in the '50's and guess I will listen to the beebs repeats from more recent time for the next month

Actually, it was not a typical episode: just a commercial disc which was put out at the time to promote the programme. In regular episodes, from the 1950's up to the death of Tom Forest about twenty years ago, he used to sing snatches of songs at Ambridge events or in the Bull..

I assume the BBC didn't save much after they stopped using 78 and 33 rpm records for shows, and switched to tape which was easily wiped and re-used for new material. I suppose this is why Mrs Dales Diary is not on Radio 4 Extra.
@StephenRBeet
@StephenRBeet 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the BBC archives were wiped in the 70's, as you say, including most of The Archers. Fortunately, they used to broadcast the show to Australia and New Zealand and these were sent out on record for broadcast. One full set was kept by ABC in Australia (I think it was) and that ecently turned up containg most og the late 50's to late 60's.

Can I just point out that this particular recording was specially produced for a commercial record release, and was never broadcast. The Archers has always been 15 minute episodes, or thereabouts, with exception, of course, of the Sunday omnibus edition. Also, "The Archers" is NOT and never will be "Out Of Copyright", as it remains the property of the BBC and has been so since it began in 1951 !!!!!!

@@StephenRBeet eversince the BBC began recording The Archers onto computer as opposed to tape circa 1988, every single episode has been kept and archived as computer audio files. The only reason the programme wasn't archived, save for dramatic or special occasion episodes, before then was because tape was too bulky, costly and there wasn't the archive space for it. ALSO - please note that The Archers remains the copyright of the BBC from 1950 until this very day (23_03_20) it will never be in the Public Domain!!!!
