Mass Appeal

Күн бұрын

Friday, April 19, makes 25 years since Nas' debut album, Illmatic, was released. To celebrate the quarter-century mark, Mass Appeal and Hennessy will be paying homage to "The Architects of Illmatic" with exclusive interviews featuring photographers, producers, writers and members of Nas' inner circle, including Pete Rock, the subject of today's clip and the producer of one of the LP's "signature" songs, "The World Is Yours." The legendary producer remembers back to when he first heard the lyrics of the classic record. "Your heart just... you just feel it for him. This guy is ahead of his time." Welcome to #IllmaticXXV Week.

Verbfromarizona Hip Hop/Boom Bap/Beats/FOR SALE...WORD. It was like hearing something that was a theological breakdown of that concrete jungle Nas found his way out of. So descriptive...subjective AND objective at the same time. I’m an old nerdy white dude, but Nas conveyed and constructed life on those blocks so schematically and precisely...that one can almost smell the air and feel the tension. In my top 3 of all time.

The three GOAT's of the Golden Era of Hip Hop... Pete Rock Large Professor DJ Premier Without these main three Producers & a host of others, Hip Hop as "WE" ( And the "WE" knows who they are) know it would not be what it is right now!! Along with Nas & other notable lyrical talents, REAL Hip Hop truly LIVES!! It even made me venture into the foray of production!! That's the profound affect it had on me!! Thank all of you for Illmatic, a Hip Hop foundational cornerstone!!

Gotta throw Q Tip in there too. “One Love” was bananas not to mention his own work with Tribe plus his work on Mobb Deep’s The Infamous (“Gove Up The Goods”, Temperature’s Rising”, Drink Away The Pain”). Also his remix of Nas’s “The World Is Yours”.

"we didn't know until it hit people" Pete Rock - 2019 , shows you how spoilt for quality and choice people were who were into hip hop at that time, all these tracks comin out and some were missed for the gold that they are, one good thing comin out of internet age, we get to remember these tracks from back in the day, and others like the Buckwild's and the Finnesses, and the Pete Rocks...for years to come, we can say we were there when that dropped, youngsters can say we know our history, now we know what we're listening to when a new pete rock track drops.

But when I finally bought that album and gave it a shot finally, it just blew my mind when I heard it. I went crazy. Knew it then that it was the greatest hip hop album ever. "Biggie's Ready to Die album came out several months after Illmatic, and Biggie was crowned king of New York in the popular culture of Hip Hop heads, Ready to Die unfairly over-shadowed Illmatic, which is truly a classic album. Though they were quite distinct artists, they innovated in analogous ways. Biggie merged language that was high and low, vernacular and vocabulary words, in a way that sounded natural. He did this with a sophisticated understanding of the patterns of black language. When a different or unusual word or phrase could be introduced while still maintaining the aesthetics of black language, he inserted it. NaS, in contrast, merged concepts that were high and low, vernacular and metaphysical, in a manner that was whole rather than pieced together, thus presenting a complex that is unusual in any music outside of jazz. What Biggie started to do with language in 1994, NaS had already begun to do with ideas on Illmatic. He carries us through the "Righteous steps" of the cosmic, oceanic, and literal dimensions of his person. He transcends." - Imany Perry (Born To Use Mics)

808 I know Premier is still just as good as he was in 94, So is Q-Tip just listen to the latest Tribe album. Nas has made killer songs lately, Pete could rise to the occasion. They shouldn’t replicate illmatic but i’m pretty sure it would be one of the best hip-hop albums ever made. Wu-Tang Clan could do the same to if RZA would go back to the grimey sound and every member was really on board.
