All credit for your comments on the Belsen visit, my Dad was among the group that first liberated the camp, something that lasted with him all his life but talked about very little. Mans inhumanity to man beggars belief at times, super series overall, thanks for your efforts.

These TMF Friday tour videos are one of the few KZfaq 'full screen/full attention" sort of video series I make a priority to sit and watch from start to finish without interruptions. These are adventure tours and today's installment was indeed a whirlwind of significant importance to students of history with impactful content from the hydro plant and the concentration camp. Sobering and gut-wrenching. From beautiful alpine views and exhilaration of the autobahn to losing (however temporary) your wallet and passport. All courtesy of TMF's trademark Brit sense of humor and affable manner, and at the same time the studied seriousness some topics demand. Hat's off and thank you for sharing! TMF = destination watching on YT.

Not just attempts. Norwegian resistance people went to Scotland to undergo training. After the training they jumped from plane on to Hardangervidden (not far from vemork). They skiied to the vemork plant. Bombed the plant and the ferry which then contained trains with heavy water. The ferry is still on the bottom of the fjord. Makes me proud of our grand parents and many kids today have much to learn about that.

I visited Belsen back in the late 80’s early 90’s whilst serving in the Army. It looks just the same and amazingly I tell people the same as you did about the noise. I never heard one animal during my visit either, when you see the pictures in the visitor centre it brings it home what a terrible place this was. Great video once again.

I read Eric ‘Winkle’ Browns book, what an amazing man! Some of the things he did and seen were unbelievable. He also holds another record of the most different types of aircraft flown at 487 Which when you consider that a spitfire mk1, mk2, mk3 etc is only counted as one type that is some list of aircraft!

Glad to hear that you found your wallet and passport. As usual a great video, many thanks. Bergen Belsen very interesting. I agree with you. How can human beings be responsible for such atrocities to each other. It's beyond me. As ever the younger generation need to appreciate what our grandparents had to endure and did for us to have such a long period of peacetime. We owe them so much.

Thanks TMF for that very sensitively documented visit to Belsen - yes, we must never forget. I am a little envious that you got to meet Eric Brown. The BBC produced a documentary about him a few years ago and they still have some clips on their website, although the whole film is no longer available there. There are also a number of videos about him here on KZfaq for those interested in learning more about this fascinating man. And thanks for this wonderful series of videos - they have been really interesting and entertaining. Cheers.

I've been following your trip since I discovered it a few days ago and I must say I am loving it! The scenery in Norway is outstanding and definitely one to add to the bucketlist. Your meetings with Capt Eric "Winkle" Brown and your respective journey to Bergen Belsen are both enlightening and sobering in equal measure. I read his autobiography on a long haul flight from Edinburgh (where a statue of the great man stands outside the main terminal) to where I live now in Seattle. It's a fascinating read! His encounters and adventures would put James Bond to shame! Thanks for taking us along on your trip Andy!

Another great video MF! The long green fence which you passed @ 19.30 was the perimeter fence to Hohne barracks, a former WW2 German Army camp which was taken over by the British at the end of the war and where the British Army remained until 2015 when we started to draw down from Germany. It’s a place famous amongst veterans, all of whom will have their own memories of it, both good and bad. Some of the British married quarters were in Bergen which is a lovely little town. Fantastic area, full of history. Had you walked further into Belsen camp and out towards the woods at the back, there are memorials to the thousands of Russian POWs who also died there at the hands of the Nazis, but who are often forgotten.

I know it's a bike tour but respect for recognising the evil that was done back in the day and paying your respects. Too easily the atrocities have been overlooked, forgotten about or even denied, which is how things like this are able to reoccur. Fascinating video TMF!! Ray Mears did a great mini-series about the real heroes of Telemark...Well worth a look; their incredible feat of surviving through the Norwegian winter while being hunted by the nazis is legend. I think it was on the BBC. The Belsen camp was really interesting and moving to see. My dad was a young doctor during WW2 and he was there at the liberation, or just after, treating the few survivors. I never knew that he had been there until after his death at the end of the 90´s. He had horrific nightmares about what he saw there throughout his life and he kept it a secret from everyone except my mother.

A great vid, thanks for sharing. My dad was also there at the liberation of Bergen Belsen with the Royal Signals, he never spoke about it and I only found out from Mum following his death. You can imagine my pride in his service. I visited in 2016 and had a day looking around, talking to the curator etc. You zipped past the “ramp” just before the camp which is where the prisoners were unloaded from the cattle trucks and marched to the camp. A good excuse to go back one day for another look? I’m planning a trip for next year around Poland, including Gdańsk and all the history there, then over to look at Stalag Luft3 ( great escape). Norway and the factory looked great, very jealous. Hopefully catch you at the NEC. Top man excellent work.

Sobering stuff... I spent 6 years stationed at Hohne, back in the 70s. It was a huge barracks back then, with a bunch of British regiments, plus some German and some Dutch. Visited the Belsen site quite a few times, and it is an experience not to be forgotten. It is true that the birds will not fly over the area, and it is *always* quite like that! I was in an army band, and we played at a ceremony to celebrate the liberation of the camp 30 years on. Lots of speeches, in German of course, and a whole lot of emotion. Some of the ex-inmates were there, and they even had the striped 'pyjamas' which were the camp uniform, back in the day. It's been more than 40 years since then, so probably most of them have gone on by now, but I know I will never forget the experience. We were not allowed to stay at the ceremony in uniform, so we had to leave after playing our bit. The powers-that-be didn't think it would be appropriate for British soldiers in uniform to be too visible at such a strong German occasion... Seeing your ride through Soltau, and especially Bergen, really brought back some better memories too!

My mother’s cousin, as a Queen Alexandria nurse, was one of the first people in Belsen with the allied troops, she said it was very disturbing sight. She said many battle hardened soldiers were in shock afterwards and rounded up many of the locals to help in the clean up. A very sad period of human history, yet I love visiting Germany and the German people are so biker friendly but it can be very warm. The beer at the end of a long day is good too...

He was only twenty years old at the time, and one of his tasks was to drive a bulldozer filling up the mass graves with the remains of the deceased inmates of the camp. How horrific would that have been for a young man who had already seen the terror of war, starting on D-Day in Normandy. Thanks for sharing.

Yes difficult to imagine - the visitor centre shows films of that very clean-up operation - wonder if your father is shown in any of them?

That's very interesting. He had some photos of some of the horror he saw there but they were lost many years ago. I must try and pay a visit one day.

Thanks again TMF, great vid with a very sobering moment when you visited belson, wow the mass graves made me stop and think. I had an uncle that was at Dunkirk, we should always be proud of what what our ancestors did for us, amazing men and women, a shame we don’t have that togetherness today in the UK. On a lighter note, have you done or are you thinking of doing a how to / feature overview of the BMW Nav, you always talk very highly of it and I’m not sure if I am missing something. I bought a Nav VI with my GSA and feel like I have been robbed of £550, I am comparing it with the system I have in my Renault car which towers above it in terms of features, usability and information, maybe I’m not just using it right but would welcome your experience and thoughts. Might be a bit niche for you as it’s only BMW owners that would be interested and I don’t want to alienate your other subscribers but thought it might make a good vid with your experience and skills.. Thanks again for this vid it has been a really good series. Cheers Ian 👍🏍

Sad to see you leave Norway, TMF. Beautiful country. Interesting visit to Bergen Belsen. The school I went to in South Africa was built on the site of a concentration camp that the British built during the Anglo Boer war, where some quarter of the Boer population died including ancestors of my family! One would have thought that the Boers might have learnt something from that but they went on to create Apartheid. They saw themselves as victims... Humanity is certainly strange.

Hey there bud, you know I often find myself thinking that I want to be just like you when I grow up, but then I remember I'm fifty-one and broke! lol . Realistically i'll probably never have the means, as much as I'd love to, of motorbike touring. However I find that if I put on a helmet and sit really close to my computer screen it's almost like being your pillion passenger! 😉. Keep up the good work, count your blessings and keep the rubber side down! All the best.

Good point - I had thought I was the only one who did that except I’m here in bed watching this latest vid of a wonderful series on my iPad. I must say that “she who must be obeyed” is not terribly impressed with the motorbike gloves! TMF - you dealt with the Belsen visit with some considerable compassion - thank you for that too.

Eventually got around to watching this, when you passed through Soltau you were 20 mins from my house! I used to be based in Bad Fallingbostel, and know the area very well. Next time you are over pop in for a brew or beer, maybe I could give you one of my children for a TMF sticker :-)

Your mention of accident statistics when on the Autobahn reminded me of a piece that was in the Financial Times when I worked in NL in the early noughties. It compared KSI (killed or seriously injured) stats per km travelled for a number of countries and Germany came out as the safest of the countries surveyed (unrestricted autobahns) with the USA (country with the lowest speed limits) as the most dangerous. Of course in Germany, the standard of driving tuition and testing is probably the most rigorous anywhere in Europe. Maybe there's a lesson in that...

After years of visiting Munich I finally made it to Dachau this August. No matter how many documentaries on the Holocaust you've seen I would recommend visiting one of these sites on a trip to continental Europe. I can also personally endorse Oradour-Sur-Glane in central France.

Great Video. Excellent series going to miss this on Fridays. There is a good Norwegian movie called Heavy Water Wars and Ray Mears wrote a great book on the mission to destroy the plant which was subsequently made into a TV series if anyone is interested. Looking forward to Spain Videos. I am thinking of going there next year with Motorrad Tours.

Another very interesting Vid, the most obvious thing noted was your visit to Belsen. Back in my Army days, I was stationed in Hone camp just up the road 81-83. Many if not most people mention how quite Belson is, what most do not realize is that after burning it down to prevent disease. The bodies were buried and covered with Lime, and so much of the ground. As a result, nothing can survive in it bugs, worms, fly's etc etc. With none of these available birds have nothing to feed on, other animals can not dig into it or won't cos there is nothing to find. Whilst stationed there some small mass graves were found in the Army camp when workers were clearing an area for building work. Last bit of perhaps to some useless info, is the NAAFI in Hohne camp was the Officers Mess. It had a large hall for dinner parties etc. When doing the restoration, they decided to take down the large lights with small light shades. These were very colourful but needed cleaning up, once taken down it was found the shades were made from human skin with Tattoos on them. Anyway looking forward to the last installment.

I can highly recommend the Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 as a replacement. Although they are 90/10 tires they lasted around 12000 km on my GSA with loads of grip. I use my bike for long trips and travelling, have a normal riding style.

Today you drove through an area of Germany that was a large area for British Army Armoured vehicle firing etc. (before we left). If you look on google maps satellite images look north, east and south of Soltau you'll see the brown areas of the Ranges [West of Bergen Belsen]. In your video you could see you drove past one of the Camps with the green covering on the fence for the ranges.

As I recall, and I may be wrong, but the UK introduced motorway speed limits to conserve fuel. I do remember as a 16 year old riding down the newly built M1 in the East Midlands with no speed restriction, not that the motorbikes of the day, Nortons, Triumphs, BSA's, etc, would do much more than 90 ;)
