You watch Guthrie for just a few minutes and you slowly but ultimately realize that this is what it sounds like when a musician has completely & utterly transcended any/all of his early influences. It's simply impossible to extrapolate backwards to what had been any earlier inspiration in the realm of guitar playing that Guthrie might have been moved by on the road to his current brilliance.
@TheOriginalArchie

I remember buying Guitar Techniques Magazine every month, solely for his lessons (that came with a CD and backing track and his solo over the track), way back in 1996. I still have every month from 1996 to 2003. He was playing at this level even back then, almost 30 years ago. Guthrie is about two years older than I am, so he was playing at this level at least in his early 20's, and obviously before then since I didn't know about him until 1996. I agree with you, he just had an exponential growth at an early age, which is rarely seen. He directly spawned so much of what we see today on the internet, which I knew was going to happen once you could find all off the materials easily on the internet in about 2005.

IMO , the only other guitar player to have done that is none other that the mighty holdsworth , and he's a huge inspiration to guthrie .
@derekbascombe7731
@derekbascombe7731 2 ай бұрын
@@ayoubramdoune Fully agree! And the point I touched upon in my original comment (the mystery of the influences) is even more valid in Holdsworth's case when you remember him admitting in one of his interviews that as a young lad he never really wanted to be a guitar player - he wanted to play a horn! And so, when you develop your melodic sense and phrasing on guitar by listening to e.g. Charlie Parker and Lee Konitz, the "influence trail" gets pretty murky if someone tried to chart it through the great guitar players of previous eras. With Holdsworth it was even more poignant when you listen (they're hard to find) to a few examples of what he'd do on the SynthAxe with the breath controller: he did sound like a horn player from the fourth dimension!!

@@derekbascombe7731 absolutly agree , you could hear a few blues guitar nuggets here and there especially his early work with soft machine , but once he got his own band , it kinda disappeared , he became more like the influence to other greats after him ( EVH , steve vai , guthrie , gambale , Mclaughlin to name a few .. ) .the only influence i cankinda hear in his playing is coltrane or at least his approach to improvisation ( maybe due to the fact that they studied the same book : Thesaurus of scales and melodic pattterns )

@sivadyert
@sivadyert 3 жыл бұрын
@@88omair Many top players (e.g. John Patrucci) can play various styles with some control and taste, but Guthrie can shred (and play musically!) myriad styles. He can even play jazz pretty well, though that is likely is weak spot as mastering jazz takes a lot of work--still he's likely better at it than many. Sure, his shredding is top notch, but it's his feel and taste that often get overlooked and put him at the top. If he wanted to just play tasty stuff and not all of the cerebral shred stuff, as cool as it is, he could be playing with or for anyone. He could be lead guitar in any top act and contribute.

That's awesome. Watching it feels more wholesome, colorful and dynamic than going to live shows myself. Guthrie said in one of his interviews that the Aristocrats is more about the interaction between the three musicians instead of technical displays of three individuals. I think your editing highlights that exact kind of interaction very well.

Great instrumentalists, great songs. He is great at what he does that is for sure. People talk or say the greatest guitarist. There isn't a greatest guitarist period. Greatness is in the eyes and ears of people who are listening or watching. There are great guitarist in every genre of music. Just don't be closed minded,open your eyes and ears to other players you will find greatness in many and guitarist in various techniques. I love listening to Satriani among many others. I listen to so much music of various types, I can't listen to one person all the time. I get burnout so I need to keep my ears open. I listen and have watched so many guitarist who are really great at what they are doing. To me nobody will ever be the greatest. I listen to music before it gets to the masses of people . I can say this will be a hit and it usually is. By that time I've moved on to something else to listen to. I can't stand the radio or to play list. By the time it gets there I've heard it listened to it enough on my own. Burnt out.

hell yeah man now portnoy had a certain way of doing his things too, even if you can play the beats and get the measures rigth on everything, but i think a part is also in production (like EQ and how to set the compressors) and a drummer having his say in how he wants things to sound a bit, marco would ace it on the technical part easily. if feel you could easily dial it in to sound like portnoy again if you choose so, a lot of mike portnoy's sound was in how the snare sounded imho,. he had this very open sounding hihat and ride even back as far as "learning to live" on metropolis 1, with a lot of highs sounding very natural, but it creates this contrast of emphasis on the snare drum with that 80s type of plate & gated reverb, it sounds more subtle than most 80s overreverbed stuff it is heavily inspired from, and seems to take the best of both worlds, by isolating the snare in the reverb and not making a big reverb soup that just wrecks the definition of everything. pantera (vinnie paul) was another band that used that over the top reverbed snare isolation until way up to the late 90s, not as much syncopated crazyness there, but still great drumming chops that really bring that snare drum in the forground when it needs to be, and they used that snare righ i've seen marco play dance of eternity in a garage, he sold me alright yeah, a bit long winded, but i dabble a lot in amateur sound design so it's dear to me
