My old squad leader told me a story: He was an e-4 going for his five and he went to the board, but there was an e-5 in his platoon that was also going to the board as well. My future squad leader did the board and did well. He stepped out of the board and the e-5 went in after him. My squad leader than heard SGM yell "GET THE FUCK OUT!!!" A few seconds after the door closed. The e-5 steps out and my squad leader asked what had happened. The e-5 looked at him, shrugged and said "well, apparently you're not supposed to do the Hitler salute." They were both stationed in Germany at the time.

At an E-6 grilling a soldier was asked about EVERYTHING Infantry He got all the questions right. The next man walked in and he heard them start to ask him medical questions. The soldier said he was not a medic. Somehow they got my records mixed up with his. Made 6 later that month. Thank God I was a medic with an infantry unit..

Also in boards like this they aren’t always necessarily looking for the right answer. They are looking for your confidence as a leader. If you hesitate with you answers you will always sound unsure. Trust in your own abilities

I did many soldier and promotion boards. The hardest one I did was a all day event for soldier of the year for division. It involved the day starting with a PT test, a written test, an oral board, a land navigation test and multiple weapons disassembly and assembly timed.

The answer is true north, grid north and magnetic north. True north is determined by direction, grid north is north from a SPECIFIC point on a map and magnetic north is determined by use of a compass.

Say the creed with pride as well as the unit motto at the end. You don't have to repeat the question. Many do to get some time to figure out the answer.

Did a board in 04 in full battle rattle with mask. Csm had us don our masks. Had it on till the last candidate went through and we got the all clear. That was a crazy board. I had just got back from the initial invasion of Iraq. Everyone passed. Great times.

The US Army i was in during the 19 60's promoted far more different than currently. 1. A time in grade based on the grade required for that mos. 2. The imediate commanding chain approves the promotion. 3. The intended future plans when the canditates enlistment date is due.

When I went to the E5, E6, and Squadron Soldier of the Month boards, I wore a Class A uniform, and was inspected head to toe for proper fit of the uniform, and placement of medals on my jacket. For current events, you mean to tell me "Who won the Daytona 500" is really a good question? What happens if that soldier doesn't follow sports or NASCAR? I was asked about current world events, not sports events. There were more than three board members each time I went to a board.

Wow that’s crazy. Over here at the Navy all you need is a test to advance pass e4. So it’s always a hit or miss when it comes to good leadership. One thing you’ll hear a lot is that anyone can pass a test.

Mine lasted about 2 minutes, if that. I was a prior SGT 2 years TIG with the 82nd. Got cought in that under 90 day rule after 1st Gulf war. Had to get out. Came back in 1 year later BUT HAD to take a reduction to SPC. I walked in said a bit about myself and CSM looked over records and had no questions Anyone have anything to add? The BN NBC NCO filling in for a 1SG asked an off the wall question to try to embarass me I guess bout the IM 93 or something. I really don't remember now but back then, coming from Saudi and all that masking, 256 kits, M8s... I shot back explaining the DT236 PDR75. The unit didn't have those yet so deer in the headlight look. CSM said " anyone else want to embarrass themselves? Ask now or hold you peace." I remember hearing my 1SG leaning over to that Chem guy and say "If the CSM has no questions that is our sign to ask no questions"

I did really well on my student first board meeting that I killed it but I made one mistake... I forgot my DoD tags!!!! I failed cause of uniformity. Even tho it isn’t mentioned, it’s part of being in the right uniform at the right time...

I knew two of the norths. I knew true north, but would I have gotten a pass with polar north (I know that magnetic north seems to be the expected answer)

Why would you salute an NCO? On my E-5 board, a Major was the senior member I reported to and saluted not some other senior NCO.

Just a dog and pony show pretty much, I think we do things much better in the Air Force for E-5 through E-7, you take a test based on your AFSC and Air Force history/customs and courtesies, you get points for that, the medals you've earned and your performance reports.
