i was on vacation in Los Angeles when the Raid 2 was running. so i went and saw it. it was a bit into it's run and it was me and maybe 10 other people in there. when we left after the movie everyone, most of us strangers, looked at each other and just nodded with big smiles on our faces. We all knew we had seen something truly spectacular in the genre.

I saw it opening night. Decent sized crowd. One of the few non-comedy times I've ever truly felt that audience reaction elevated a theater experience, because the collection of "oooh"s and the sound of many people sucking air through their teeth is a good amplifier. Top reaction of the night was the guy who loudly said "OH SHIT!" at the final shot of the Bat Boy and Hammer Girl fight.

Gareth Evens is simply a gift the god of action has brought to us. Movies like "The Raid" and "The Raid 2" belongs on mount Olympus of the genre. He's simply a wizard in putting the action on a movie, not only for the fight coreographies and the extremely talented actors and stuntmen he casts, but, above all, the way Gareth uses insane camera movements to highlight the action he puts on a sequence, and that's simply awesome and extremely innovative. Even if it may sound like an oxymoron, in the first "Raid" there are some shots that looks so real they seems unreal. So kudos to Gareth and the movie magic he got!

@@aaronrumph3291 I'm not completely agree with that because such Korean movies exist way before Hollywood made one. The man from nowhere, breathless, nameless gangster, gangster high, a dirty carnival my wife is a gangster(all 3 series), marrying Mafia, sunflower, city of violence etc all these movies had brilliant camera work, extraordinary fight choreography. I think even Raid was inspired by Korean movie Old boy. John wicks character has similarities to Korean drama old boy, not just the fight choreography.

Thank you for a great interview. Gareth Evans is a guru of martial arts movies who appeared as a bolt from the blue. His films Raid 1 & 2 essentially defined what the martial arts of the 21st century should look like. It's a pity he won't make Raid 3 anymore, but I hope he'll make another action movie. It's worse with Iko Uwais, whom Evans made famous as a brutal Indonesian variation of Tony Jaa. However, that was in 2014. Since then, nothing has been filmed that would keep pace with Iko Uwais.

Such a legend. I saw a hint at the Raid 3! Hope it’s happening! I recall going to see The Raid : Redemption in 2011 ! And then The Raid 2 : Berandal in 2014! I recall they had them back2back, so I got to see the first film again in cinema! Gareth is such a legend of a director, and I hope he on the 3rd film! I also recall watching Merantau in 2009- and recognised Iko from that film! Hence why when I saw The Raid trailer, I was definitely gonna go see it !! I hope they bring him for the next Mortal Kombat films ! Amazing !!

(Spoiler--kinda) He's revealed he won't be doing it because the story wouldn't follow Rama. Rama will go home to his family. The story would instead follow Goto, the son of the Yakuza boss we see talking to Rama at the end of the Raid 2.

Gareth Evans said he wouldn’t do a raid 3 and I’m fine with that. The first 2 set the standard for new action films to follow and it shows with films like John wick and extraction. Doing a sequel isn’t easy.

@@DezorianGuy That it's basically a British version of the Raid 2 but with deeper writing and characters and world building. But that's only the 1st episode.

You don't need big budget if Gareth can make a high quality movie cheaply like the Raid.

Scott, what you said about translating a martial arts fight into a gunfight in camera is so spot-on. I also notice this build of confidence with filming guns in Evans' films, and Gangs is just such a treat to behold. Cannot wait for Havoc!!!
