Did you know that a third of the Bible is ancient Israelite poetry? Poetry is a rich and artistic form of human communication, but often the most difficult to read. In this video we’ll explore the unique characteristics of biblical poetry, so you can discover its beauty and power for yourself.

If any of you are English majors at Uni and take a poetry class, read a psalm for the class. We had poetry readings in my class and I got up and read Psalm 22 out loud. I was super nervous and shaking like a leaf but God gave me strength to get through it. Some people said it wasn’t poetry but most of the psalms ARE poetry, and beautifully written poetry at that! Plus most of my classmates are not believers including my professor so I hope it at least convicted some them to be more open towards the Bible and hopefully one day read it for themselves. The Bible is such an awesome book, I praise God and thank Him for allowing me to see the truth and understand scripture.

Poetry in general is my biggest weakness - I’m too literal! I’ve been praying for guidance on tackling it since ⅓ if the Bible is poetry I’ve got to understand it! Prayers were answered through TBP videos! Thank you TBP! May YaHWeH continue to Bless you richly! ✞

Kelly Bezz Just try to find reference and metaphor. Find regularities and irregularities, within context. Find anomaly and obvious sign that it is not literal. One door close another open. You don't take this literal because what "door" is referring to is symbolic (a way or opportunity). Blue is serenity and peace but literally it isn't, it is representative.

I hear you Kelly. I also have a tough time with most of the poetry in the bible. And even when they say in TBP that "the repetitive nature forces you to slow down and linger over the feeling of it all" I have a hard time relating to that because when I see something repeat too many times, my mind tends to glaze over the subject or just lose focus altogether. It's frustrating, but at the same time, I can't force myself to understand. I can only ask and in God's perfect timing, he will show me the meaning.

I’m a philosophy undergraduate in the UK, and your videos and podcasts (esp. the ones on wisdom literature) really show a love of wisdom so absent from most of my lecturers and colleagues (it’s a little ironic ‘philosophy’ is supposed to be ‘the love of wisdom’)

Please do a part two to this including parallelism, alliteration, assonance, and sharpening perspective/focus. All essential to Biblical poetry, like how the repetition of words in Proverbs weave a web of connecting words that makes one feel like they are walking on a twisting and swirling path, while the poet himself talks about choosing the right "path". Amazing stuff!
