DIY metal designer lapel pin made using tradition trench art coin cutting techniques with a modern twist. The remainder of the coin is turned into a keyring to a company the lapel pin.
I wear a blazer for work and have been obsessed with lapel pins ever since Ted Baker has been putting them on their blazers.
I was inspired to make my own custom lapel pins, they get a lot of attention at work and using a piercing saw with 2/0 blades I cut out the young Elizabeth coin face and wear it with pride on my blazer.
The surrounding coin leaves a perfect silhouette of the queens shadow and attached to a quality gun metal grey split ring makes a perfect custom key ring to accompany the design.
I have made many designs with vintage coins, I check that the coin is not rare before cutting and that it is pre 1971 so it’s not illegal to cut.
Enjoy the video!

What’s your favourite coin design?

that's great, for another finish for your copper pieces, you can electroplate zinc onto the surface and then heat up the part (on a cooker hot plate will do) and the finished piece will magically turn to brass, with a good polish looks great :-)

Oh wow that sounds interesting. Is it easy to do with a DIY set up?

@@JKLProjects Hi, yes very easy, there are plenty of videos on youtube on how to electroplate zinc onto copper, I tried with a few old coins before doing anything good :-)

Also, they were originally a form of trench art as soldiers could make them with minimal tools. Where did you find the cut coin? Is the date missing? Could have been in the soil for a long time!

Thanks for watching, I had a spell where I was doing lots of coin cutting but it was before I started filming for YT. Check out my hand of hamsa necklace video and the signet ring made from a shilling. Also subscribe for more, there will definitely be more coin art in the future.

Worth noting that modern versions are copper coated steel, not bronze!
@JKLProjects
@JKLProjects 3 жыл бұрын
They are indeed, it’s quite interesting to see the steel colour on the sides and the copper plating. Also worth noting that the modern ones are illegal to cut! Only Pre decimal counts allowed to be damaged.

@JKL I didn't know about it being illegal in the UK to cut coins. That's crazy. I wonder why. In the States you can do whatever you want to the money, government doesn't care, so long as you're not trying to make counterfeits.

Great job.....enjoyed watching this process, but had a few questions if you don't mind. What is the little green colored tapered tool your using to finish the edges.....seems to have done a nice job of polishing after the diamond bits. Also have a question on why you put the Liver of Sulphur onto the silhouette. Thought the dark would polish off but it didn't. I figured you would want a nice shiny surface. Any rationale for that? Thanks again and look forward to more of your Art.

Is this a regular coping saw? Or a specialist one?
@JKLProjects
@JKLProjects 4 ай бұрын
Hi there, it’s called a jewellery saw or piercing saw. Same concept as a coping saw but uses smaller blades about the thickness of a human hair. 👍

To give it an antique look and bring some contrast to the details of the coin so it shows up more when it’s viewed on the lapel from a distance. I hope this helps.

how did you make that starter hole
@JKLProjects
@JKLProjects Жыл бұрын
Hi there, the starter hole is made using a micro drill bit. They are standard drill bits but just very small, some under 1mm diameter. Sometimes you need a drill bit holder adapter as they might fall out of a standard chuck.
