Probably the worst cases of gatekeeping I've seen are with communities that either rely on some sort of limited resource or service to exist, are so niche that any influx of new members would threaten to change them, or somehow "break the rules" in such a way that they need to stay hidden. The genuine paranoia they get when a couple new members show up is insane. Any sign of their community growing is seen as not only a failure to gatekeep, but a sign of "the end" for them. The worst part is that, in many cases, such paranoid gatekeeping is justified.

As an artist, I see it rarely with artists who don't want to share their techniques, as if it will lose them business or something. I'll tell you that most artists love talking about their craft and share around ideas so we can all grow together. Then there's those few artists that gatekeep. They really rub me the wrong way. I remember being intrigued by how this specific costume part was lined, so I asked the artist and they said "magic" right to my face. I think that was the first time in my life I actually rolled my eyes lol

The curation of a space decides what the space becomes and the experience of everyone in it. Gatekeeping is a form of preservation and standards.

13:18 - That's what it really boils down to; at least 9/10 times. Fear of "change". Which is simultaneously irrational & useless, because change is literally life's ONLY constant. That, & death. And taxes.

I'm working on a code of ethics for a particular industry, and I've been called a gatekeeper, because they don't want a light of accountability or professionalism shone on them. There are a couple of ways to look at "gatekeeping". Countries should gatekeep to prevent criminal foreigners from becoming citizens
@partirbukadera
@partirbukadera 4 ай бұрын
Why would that be your first thought? There's more to a country's criminality than the residual rate of cRiMiNaL fOrEigNeRs.

i like your new little animated frog person, it's really cute i think this topic would have benefited from a broader view of both history and culture as humanity knows it, though i appreciate your use of "it's always important to learn from the past." i'm excited for an hour long video in the future, it seems like you have a good foundation to begin longform video essay format. my question for you is that you mentioned in a previous video that you were in school and had to take time off for minor surgery. what are you studying? do you think you'll change what you're studying in the future/continue with school, or is the current degree you're pursuing going to be it for you as far as you have planned? are you hoping to use youtube's sponsorships to help pay for your schooling? have you ever considered opening a patreon and ko-fi account in the meantime in case a sponsorship that you like is slow to come? i can't quite tell if you said 'send me video games' or 'send me videos' at the end there because the CC cut off, so i'll send you a video, or a channel more like. i think you could benefit from perusing how, for example, Charlatan Wonder handles sponsorships vs. audience support. i've been a subscriber almost since the beginning of your channel. although i'm not a content creator myself, it seems you're having trouble building a steady portfolio that you feel proud of. there's no shame in analyzing all of your options available, including forgoing sponsorships due to slow channel growth from things that are out of your control, re: the algorithm of wherever you're hosting your content. it sounds like you're ramping up to make youtube either a sole career for yourself or at least something that makes money. it's up to you though.

Most of the time, Gatekeeping is wrong, but there is a good reason in a specific case these days. That is people who aren't fans, working on adaptations of those things and not respecting the source material. Look at Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, where King Shark can use a lantern ring in complete violation of the lore. Or The Last Jedi completely ruining Luke Skywalker. When fans complain about those things, its a form of gatekeeping, and it shouldn't be ignored. Fans should be respected.

i feel like if you expand the definition to fit the idea of 'know the source material before making an adaptation of it' then by that point gatekeeping is gonna fit way too much like, the basic idea is just 'trying to stop people from enjoying something because they dont fit something arbitrary' the enjoying is more when it comes to hobbies or likes, not when youre adapting material, its silly to call it gatekeeping when youre just asking for someone to know what they are adapting, its like if gatekeeping was asking for only electricians to fix your house wiring, thats not gatekeeping, thats just the minimum for their job, as so is having knowledge of what youre gonna adapt

Why? Simple, because humans like feeling "superior" to others, it's literally in our DNA. Now, does it make sense? Nope, unless there's a valid reason to it, like a certain new group of users that are destroying what you love with their words/actions.

Sometimes people hate keep for this reason: to protect what they love or are interested in. I mean, think about it: You gatekeep who knows about a limited run sale, your favorite fishing spot, who is allowed in your home, who knows your private information. And guess what? It’s necessary for society to go on.

People have probably said this already, but I'm gonna give my two cents anyway. I think this video is very one-sided and only assumes the people being gatekept always have good intentions, and that everyone who gatekeeps a hobby or franchise are just mean old nerds who don't want women or minorities in their hobbies which isn't the case 99% of the time, or even 75% in my opinion. Does that happen sometimes? Yes. From my personal experience with gaming though (and to a lesser extent films) is that the people who usually get gatekept never had any intention of enjoying the series or medium as it is, but want to subvert it to their own tastes with absolutely no respect for the source material. You see this with lots of shows/movies based on video games, or as someone who's not even a Star Wars fan, but an outsider looking in, the newer Star Wars media. They come in, take the name, but completely subvert the series for usually the worse. This is when gatekeeping is necessary.

The only gatekeeping I've seen done right, is what the weebs do. Where we call each other a bunch of loli bodypillow loving losers, to the point where no one wants to be associated with us. It does a remarkably good job at keeping the riff raff out. But the most annoying gatekeepers are easily gamers. The amount of times one of those idiots have come to me trying to gatekeep, and I'm just sitting there thinking to myself "Seriously? I should be gatekeeping you, you normie!" I've lost count of the number of people that have said "Oh, in order to play it the way it's meant to be played you've got to play it on period correct hardware." DUDE! I WAS THERE WHEN THAT PERIOD CORRECT HARDWARE WAS BRAND NEW! AND I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT IT WAS MEANT TO BE PLAYED ON THE STRONGEST MACHINE YOU COULD FIND AT MAXIMUM GRAPHICS!

TLDR: Broken arm syndrome. A very niche area that is still somewhat relevant I feel is medical care gatekeeping, or what I term real care gatekeeping. This involves pushing ineffective or, in my case, destructive medication to address the issue they are trying to fix, all to fit a government-issued list of what is deemed the only way to treat X people. As someone who lives in the UK under their horrible trans care system, this almost undid 8 years of DIY medical treatment in the span of half a year. I eventually had enough and realized that the only one who cares about what works for me is me, no matter what evidence I provide and how many needles I let in my body to extract or deliver fluids. These efforts were all worth nothing toward my argument, despite proving me right. I hope this is a UK and trans care issue exclusively, but I doubt it. If any trans fem person is reading this who is with the London GIC specifically and you value your hair or libido RUN! even if it costs you the only pathway you have to surgical pathways they will cripple you before you get anywhere close to that stage and I feel that is by design, you do not have stealth as a option either as they will force you to take GnRH blocker (a testosterone stimulant by nature) by a nurse they will refuse to show you how to take it yourself (even though common practice for other drugs on request) it is against policy and they report back after EACH AND EVERY DOSE not doing so is read as uncertainty and back you go in the surgical wait time, systemic transphobia.

@FenrirtheBloodHusky genuine interest is good. I'm talking about the people that hate Dungeons and Dragons, they hate video games, and they hate pretty much any hobby you can think of. They hate everyone that enjoys a particular hobby, forcing themselves in and changing your hobby for the worse.
