Shorebirds are a diverse and fascinating group of birds, and some species are renowned for their marathon migrations from arctic breeding grounds to wintering areas in the Southern Hemisphere. Shorebirds are also notoriously difficult to identify. This webinar presentation, hosted by VENT tour leader and shorebird identification expert Michael O’Brien, will explore various techniques for identifying shorebirds, including both macro and micro field marks, and highlight several VENT tours with excellent opportunities for shorebird study.

Mr. O’Brien did a phenomenal job pointing out differences in the birds as well as providing pics of the differences. Need more! Love the comparison pics.

Thank you; brilliant. Just what I needed. Walk the coastal path by the Bristol Channel every day and love to see the waders; especially happy if I spot a curlew. Very unsure of some of the birds I see, so this will help a lot in identifying them. Often hear their calls, but not sure which call belongs to which bird. More please!

Merlin will attach pictures to the calls. I would be keen to hear about what you see these winter months.

Interestingly enough as a young man of 15 years old...I took a special interest in shorebird identification....I had the special treat of living near parker river nationsl wildlife refuge on plum island massachusetts. When I first went there I saw lots of people with spotting scopes...not just binoculars...but high powered scopes...and I realized that those scopes would be fantastic in allowing one to get good steady close up shots of the different migratory birds that populated the Bill forward pool at the refuge... .So I got myself a cheap spotting scope cuz i wanted to give it a try....There was an older gentleman their who I saw quite often, and he was so fun to talk to.He looked like a pro dressed in his outdoor gear and olive drab.He drove a very old Pinto wagon that barely ran,but he was always there and showed me what I was looking at and was a great big help in those early days of myself as a young man to learn how to identify shorebirds. I had a fantastic guide just titled shorebirds that i paid 35 bucks for which at the time was a heck of a lot of money but I was dedicated to the art of identification.I get great joy at watching shorebirds on the mudflats....taking inventory and seeing how many species I can find on any given day... Semipalmated sandpipers, lesser and greater yellowlegs and Dunlins...golden plovers were all very common on plum island. If you ever get a chance PRNWR is one of the finest birding spots on the entire east coast of the Usa as it has many different habitats for over 300 species of birds..

A shorebird is any bird that is included within the order Charadriiformes, whilst shorebirds belonging to the families Turnicidae (Buttonquails), Pedionomidae (Plains Wanderer), Thinocoridae (Seedsnipes), Rostratulidae (Painted Snipes), Jacanidae (Jacanas), Scolopacidae (Snipes, Curlews, Sandpipers, Godwits, Woodcocks, Dowitchers, Phalaropes, Shanks, Tattlers, Turnstones, Knots, Stints, Dunlin, Ruff, and Surfbird), Charadriidae (Plovers and Lapwings), Pluvianellidae (Magellanic Plover), Recurvirostridae (Avocets and Stilts), Ibidorhynchidae (Ibisbill), Haematopodidae (Oystercatchers), Burhinidae (Stone Curlews), Chionidae (Sheathbills), Glareolidae (Pratincoles and Coursers), Dromadidae (Crab Plover), and Pluvianidae (Crocodile Bird) are specifically called waders, additionally, shorebirds that are called waders are a paraphyletic group because the families Burhinidae, Chionidae, Glareolidae, Dromadidae, and Pluvianidae are more closely related to the shorebird families Laridae (Gulls), Stercorariidae (Skuas), Sternidae (Terns, Noddies, and Skimmers), and Fraterculidae (Puffins, Razorbill, Auks, Auklets, Guillemots, Murres, and Murrelets) than they are to other shorebird families with species called waders.

thanx for this video, very nice Explanations. Last week i had to find out if it was a Numenius arquata or a Numenius phaeopus. Normally not hard if you have any comparison. but the phaeopust was all alone in a field. at least we decided right because of the beak.
