Henry David Thoreau's future was looking grim. In 1837, the same year he graduated from college, the economy collapsed. The "Panic of 1837" was one of the worst economic recessions in American history (said to be comparable in devastation to the Great Depression of the 1930s) and resulted in widespread societal and political turmoil. Just about everyone was struggling, stressed, and uncertain of the future. Bouncing between jobs, mired in doubt, it was difficult for Thoreau to see a way forward.
In 1845, a friend advised Thoreau: "Go out…, build yourself a hut, and there begin the grand process of devouring yourself alive. I see no other alternative, no other hope for you."
So he did.
Fortunately for us, he wrote down what he learned.
Filmed with Nikon Z6 II (Tamron 35-150mm) and DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

Truly timeless wisdom, thank you for this. I need to get a copy of Walden. It has probably been 35 years since I read it. Thoreau had incredible insight and wisdom.

It had been many, many years for me too. It's not always the easiest read, but well worth it! Thanks so much for watching!

Thoreau! He inspired great souls like Gandhi. He's likened to Tolstoy. Environmentalists adore him.

What a great video to wake up to. Thanks YT recommends. I’ve read Walden, but like all things, it is in you but then forgotten until brought back to the forefront again, with videos such as yours. Funny enough. I wrote many of the quotes you included here on the LAST page of my present journal. Man, I just loved your video so much! It’s so beautifully measured. The music is perfect. Your voice. The sounds of your feet crunching through the woods. Really. So perfect. Thank you. EDIT: subbed. Time well spent.

What a great comment to cap off my morning! Haha. Thank you so much for the kind words, it means a lot to see this kind of feedback. Like you, Walden was just something in the background of my mind for many years, until I decided to revisit it a few months back. It's an inspiring book, and it was pretty obvious on my re-read why it's stuck with us for so long. Thoreau was full of great quotes. Thanks again for watching and commenting, and have a wonderful day!

I think this might be your most cinematographically accomplished video yet. The synthesis of the carefully selected quotes with the more narrative driven format is a nice change of pace and more engaging watch. I’ve been trying to live more mindfully recently and take stock of the ways in which I spend my time, so this was a relevant watch for me. Well done. Can’t improvise for shit, though

I think we should never forget that Thoreau was living the same life Millenials and adjacent generations are being criticized for. Living with his parents and his mom does the cooking and laundry for him.

Thanks for the comment, and absolutely, that's an important element of the story for sure. Thoreau was never trying to be a recluse, and maintained many of his regular social routines while living at Walden Pond. That's a great point about Millennials and younger generations today -- Thoreau was just out of college and in the same situation that a lot of people are finding themselves in currently. He set out to reprioritize how he was spending his time, but he had no problem turning to others for help. Then and now, it's not a bad thing to ask for help!

Nice video. I think many are confused that he was 100’s of miles from civilization.
