Jemma Lewis talked to us about the process of hand marbling paper for our Letterpress Shakespeare series.
In this beautiful process droplets of oil are floated on a special solution and combed into patterns so that each sheet of paper bears a unique design.
The Folio Society produces beautifully crafted collector’s editions of the world’s greatest books, each with unique illustrations or specially researched photographs throughout. Find the books you love at foliosociety.com.

Gorgeous. I love that the paint wasn't highly manipulated. And how lovely that you can work with your Dad. Sweet.

I started to learn Ebru (Marbling) 2 weeks ago. It's such an amazing Turkish art😊 I wanted to learn how to make it 6 years ago but never got chance to begin. I'm the happiest person on earth since I learn ~❤️

European marbled paper is nice but I much find Turkish marbled paper with its drawings even more beautiful yet I find it difficult to use for books since often it would mean to destroy this artwork by taking it apart in a way. What remains the absolute pinnacle of marbled papers for me is Japanese sumiganashi. The incredibly delicate intricacy of it is just utterly breathtaking and like marbled paper made in the European fashion it can be split for use in books. Thank you for this wonderful video!

Marbling dates back to the 9th century and is basically done in the same method today as it was then. It is labor intensive and unpredictable. In centuries past the craft was passed only from Master to apprentice and in secrecy. This is the real deal. This has nothing to do with shaving cream or nail polish and is most absolutely not wrapping paper. Each piece is one of a kind and cannot be replicated in the marbling vat. Each piece is like a little miracle.

It's gouache paints, probably a bit thinned with water. The water is thickened with carrageenan (Irish moss). Cornstarch-thickened water will created completely different patterns.

If Folio Society has contracted her to do marbling for them, then she is top-rate. I have one of Folio Society's major achievements (I think, anyway)...the 28-pound, two-volume, Johnson's 1755 Dictionary facsimile they put out in 2006. It is a work of art put together by top-notch craftsmen and craftswomen. The lady that did the marbling for this book, Ann Muir, who was famous in the field, is unfortunately no longer with us, which makes this set even more special.

I hope to start a marbling studio for women in recovery. I have had good success with some acrylic paints, but would love to develop the technique on a more professional level. Can you point me to somewhere I can have my questions answered or workshop to attend? I am a great experimenter and am not afraid to try techniques on my own. One question is...is there a ratio of water to gouache paint that you use and what brand? Thank you for being so open with your information the video and your papers are fabulous. All the very best.

How do you keep the paper flat please? Is that what the press is for? I have to stretch this thickness of paper to avoid it puckering and buckling, so it is on a board all the time I am working on it. How do you not need to do this? Many thanks! Beautiful work.

Great video The Folio Society! Thanks for taking the time to make and upload it. FYI, I have now embedded your video into a recent paper marbling tutorial post I did on our bookbinding site (www.ibookbinding.com/blog/marbled-paper-bookbinding-tutorial-and-photo-gallery/). I hope you don't mind? If so, let me know and I can remove it... Thanks again, Paul

Mr Rogers misses the point completely! Without Jemma and the one or two other accomplished marblers remaining in the UK, this beautiful craft would die out, and life for traditional bookbinders would be much more difficult. And, by the way, as Jemma explains, each sheet is actually unique!

The point I am making here is that this style of marbling is far from unique,it is used by virtually every other Marbler worldwide.I worked as a professional marbler for 42 years and I can assure you that this style requires little skill and could be mastered by anyone with a little practice.
@simsand23
@simsand23 9 жыл бұрын
But surely the point is, very few people are taking up the craft now, and we should be pleased that Jemma and others are continuing to produce traditional patterns? You are clearly proud to have done your time, and presumably welcome someone carrying on the trade?
