10:58 To be completely fair; the Japanese did use BBS a lot longer then us! There is also sites like FC2 that host web-based BBS servers that can be used for messaging. It's still really great for small local communities that prefer more control over how things are ran, and keeps things private if they self host. Still to this day you'll find a few Japanese BBSs that still get used frequently, they've always been a lot slower to let go of old tech; which I sort of really appreciate since it's made understanding, maintaining and implementing old systems a breeze in the modern day (since they still evolve in their own weird ways).

I think the reason why Drift had that weird rear heavy feeling, was because the camera focused on the rear of the car, and had the front move around it, as supposed to what most games do. Focus on the front of the car and let the rear swing around the camera.

You forgot to mention there's another Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift game that came out before Drift 2 which is Kaido Racer. Many people forgot about it maybe because it was only in Europe (Or I might call it Drift 1.7). Anyways, Drift 1.7 does a lot of improvement over the first Drift and car list is much more interesting because it has plenty of European and American car and some D1 cars too that somehow don't make it into Drift 2. Highly recommend to play Kaido Racer also known as Kaido Battle 2: Chain Reaction in Japan.

I looked at the thumbnail and was interested in what you have to say about the series. What I didn't expect was the disappointment and inaccuracies presented in this video. I will present them in sections to make it more readable. 1:57 - The history of the series I think it's a shame you didn't go much in depth about the SFC or PS1 entries, but I would understand if you wanted to keep the NA focus. However, Tokyo Highway Battle was released in North America in 1996 for the PS1. Not mentioning this is a very weird choice to make. If you couldn't find footage of it, it's very similar gameplay wise to the JP SFC, PS1, and Saturn releases you skipped over in the video. The series would get rebooted to how most people who have heard of the series would know it as in 1999. 2:45 - Tokyo Xtreme Racer The first Dreamcast entry doesn't have any way to lose SP by colliding into walls or cars. There are 8 main bosses (not counting the team leaders) and you left out the 4 Devas which are a part of these bosses. I do agree that some races can be unfair but more for the fact that some rivals can drive like they are on rails which includes driving through the traffic cars more than anything. 4:29 - Tokyo Xtreme Racer(2) Zero This section frustrates me the most. Of course it has 2000's vibes, it's from 2001. This nitpick aside, TXR2 and TXR Zero are very different games that are played in very different consoles. Calling it a port is just insulting. TXR2 is when Genki got experimental to create features that either did return in later entries or never appeared again. For example, the sub-leaders in TXR2 would appear based on your losses with a team. It was removed in later entries for good reason. The handling and collisions are wildly different in these two games. TXR2 has what people consider the best handling because of how the grip works and the walls are very punishing due to them being sticky. TXR Zero on the other hand mostly has cars that grip and corner like crazy, and the ping-pong walls return from TXR1. There is also more detail in Zero's map in general which even includes, moving trains and airplanes in the sky. Calling either game "not a massive improvement" is insulting considering how quick Genki produced these games. The games don't need a massive change in its core gameplay to still be fun. ??? In both games do have insane acceleration, but they can be beatable with a good top speed or crashing into traffic in TXR2 and Zero respectively. Genki added more teams in Zero than the amount in TXR2. Edit: The video at 5:58 was not credited so I will do that for the video creator: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z6uDp7NluLW6ZIU.html 6:30 - Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 Saying that there wasn't much improvement in this title is an understatement. This game is very ambitious with having 3 cities to drive in, not to mention the fact that it is all done using laser-scan to map it out accurately. The driving physics got a major change in how it grips and how the tires react with higher distances done throughout the night. The addition of 3 car SP battles and batting boss rivals in a row spice up the experience. The SP system changed so that if you have 1% SP, you could not lose SP until the rival goes far enough away from you. The car models changed with mixed results. 7:18 - Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift I felt really bad that you played this one and I unfortunately beat this game many times. No, the black Subaru isn't Takumi and he only appeared in Drift 2/Kaido Battle 3. I wouldn't consider this game to be a solid game to play because of the cars sliding everywhere or the brain-dead rivals. Drift 1 specifically has infamously long loading times compared to the versions in other regions. I think playing Kaido Racer / Kaido Battle 2 is better for someone to play for the first time than Drift 1 because the refined gameplay and the option of playing at 60 Hertz is worth a mention even if you only kept to NA releases. 9:25 - Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 I think the first half of this video was an appetizer for your retrospective on this game. The "starting money name cheat" is a complicated thing to explain, but Genki didn't intentionally want you to type your favorite character name. One thing you didn't mention was C-Level and getting prizes from rivals and the different kinds of categorizing events. Beating the Renault and GDB isn't the main story as you understand the reasons for the Kingdom Twelve and 13 Devils battling it out. I wouldn't consider the credits system balanced at all in this game because you can do as much races as you want compared to Drift 1 and Kaido Racer. In Hokkaido, Kaido President has a very powerful 4WD S2000 which is why they are faster and make it difficult. Final Thoughts I think you clearly have a passion for these games, more so especially for Drift 2. Unfortunately, the information that you got from the TXR Wiki is inaccurate and surface level at best. Your overviews of the other games give the impression that they were just made from a few hours of playtime even if shown otherwise with the ??? Battle in Zero. I think the focus on North American releases really hurt this video. This video seems to be not as polished or well-researched for what these games deserve.

About TXR: Drift 1 physics being weird when driving fwd cars, That is probably due to the stiff chase camera being centered around the rear of your car, i had this feeling too before I swap to the closer on that locked onto your roof. Rather than "stiff", it's more like they pivot the sways to the rear of the car for no reason. Stiff would be like GT4 where the camera just rigidly follows the car's direction and you can immediately see what's in front of you (which would've made all the TXRD games better imo).

Great video! Although I think there's one big charm of the series that you forgot to mention, and that's the fact that the games are set in the real world, on real existing public roads; it might be surprising but there are not many game that lets you _street_ race in real world streets and just give you an imitation or something that's inspired by the real thing. In TXR3 they even laser scanned the real life Shuto Expressway of Tokyo to Yokohama (Hanshin in Osaka and Nagoya Expressway are possibly also laser scanned). The series tries to replicate these real life routes as accurate as possible and when you encounter them in other games (it's really just Wangan MaxiTune and Initial D Arcade along with other Japanese arcade games) or maybe even real life, you would recognize them and grow a familiarity with the likes of famous C1 route in Tokyo or Haruna touge (Akina from ID). This helps the game on immersing you in the "Japanese street racer life simulator" fantasy as you start from broke boy in a shitbox, into legendary street racer status. The progression, real life tracks, the unique nickname system that changes depending on what you do in the game, rivals with various backgrounds and history, and don't forget massive car count *with extensive customization and tuning option* (in the mid-2000s mind you), it's all to sell the core fantasy to the player. This is what I think most modern racing game lacks, they lack a central vision, a core fantasy for the player to be engaged in (Blackbox era NFS are a master of this craft).
@Fastminer07

Yeah, the only other racing games I can think of that let you freely drive on real life roads would be The test drive series and maybe the crew if you count that. TXR3 and TXRD2 are some of my favorite racing games ever! i genuinely love grabbing an odd, probably unreliable and unheard of car and turning it into the ultimate highway racing machine, or grabbing something like an AZ-1 or an AE92 FWD and turning it into a rally machine the amount of things you can do to these cars is incredible and many modern arcaderacers and simracers wish they could come close to these gems.

The TXRD series really cemented my absolute LOVE for jdm cars and the racing scene, I feel like txrd2 really was the best all around, the physics where awesome even for todays standard. I remember revisiting the game with a wheel and pedals and it felt even better. The character storylines and the boss intros were so next level. Modern racing games miss such simple details, if txrd was to be re-released with legit just modern graphics and a few physics tweaks im sure it would do well! Great video

That was a good video! I liked it from the beginning to the end 👌 The flow of the storytelling was great and your voice is on point for this type of documentaries. Also, if you like the touge atmosphere and vibe, check out the Kaido Net by Touge Union, which is a community that keeps alive and grows more and more content that is about touge racing. It's just on a sim engine, so there is also quite high entry level of knowledge and experience to get the fun from it. There is a preview on my channel of what it can looks like when you spend most of your high school days grinding the sim-based touge driving 😆

GT2-3 and the Tokyo Extreme Racer Games are such a major part of my life. I became a Toyota technician with the goal of becoming a rally tech and eventually driver. I wanted to be a Carlos Sainz Sr. I wanted to slide my GT-Four through tight uphill Hairpins while the 3SGTE roared. I loved racing games where I was a nameless Wanker with a shit box car and a dream of becoming the ruler of the streets and track. If I was a Toky XR character they’d call me something like “Big Dream Wanker Laser Bullet King” (Game has the best nicknames I swear!) The drifting games I didn’t know about until years later when I actually had an entry level technician job with Toyota Racing Development A fellow tech loaned me his copy of TXR Drift. I was hooked and he would come over to hang out and we’d play that game for hours and hours after work while taking breaks to play Forza 2. Now I’ve got a few cool cars, and my youngest son loves cars. He wants me to slide every corner in my GT Four when we go for drives. He just recently found my copy of the last TXR game that came to the states. Import Tuner Challenge. He’s hooked and loves it as much as I did. I’ve gotta find a way to play PS2 games and make them not look like a visual dumpster fire on modern TV’s. He’d love the vehicle list of the older games and especially the technical skill of TXR drift. I still call 6Th Gen Celicas “Steel a dinosaurs” because of the cool naming of the TXR cars before the were licensed. I can’t believe how old this all makes me feel, while also loving how fun and also how young these old games make me feel. I don’t know if the roads are accurate to real life but I know the C1 Kanjyo and Yaesu route like the back of my hand, despite never having seen them in real life. There was a game on mobile about 10 years ago by Bandai ( I think) called Spirit Racing or something like that. It was an awesome Japanese Touge style racer. But something happened and now it’s only available in Japan. It was like a mobile TXR game and super fun. Wish the series would make a comeback.

The weird part of the physics of Drift 1 was mainly the camera angle actually. It wouldn't really follow the car as it turns so it would have that mid engine feel to it. But if you play exclusively in bumper camera, then the physics feel so much better. Night and day difference.
