Jujutsu Kaisen manga has changed a lot in the last few chapters. Rather that be designs, backgrounds, everything about the art changed. In this art analysis video, we are going to explain the change in Jujutsu Kaisen mangas art, how it effected characters like Gojo, and the mangaka, Gege Akutami.

@@ChupaLmfao we do not know that for sure. I like his new artstyle. A clean artstyle does not mean "finished". Likewise, a messy artstyle does not mean "unfinished".I like both. I feel you. Everything is rugged and dark. In my high opinion it is a welcome change-it always makes the earlier arcs more nostalgic; you can look back on the ‘good’/‘early’ days the same way the characters do.

Though I tend to lean towards the older art style, one thing that benefits from Akutami’s scratchy style are the fights, which became more impactful with the use of speedlines and shading, adding to Akutami’s great use of figure posing and backgrounds, and you can see why people really like JJK’s fights. Also, I too am waiting for the eventual Yuji x Gojo x Megumi scene.

I will say, as someone who draws and went to college for art- sometimes you can lose a LOT of expression and feeling in drawings when you clean it up, or don’t work gestural. A gestural drawing is more focused on motion, and flow of a figure. When you clean it up, pretty up your lines, and give it more form: you can miss out on the raw and chaotic feeling. You lose some imagination of the piece. I like pretty manga when I want to relax and enjoy quieter moments but with JJK I am absorbed in the action- the instinct of the fight- the surprise in every kick and trick. Gege is a master of quickness and feeling. He has to get on the page what punch lands next- making the fight seem organic and primal.
@caitchri2426

Sounds weird but my heart flutters with adrenaline just thinking of the impact of the sketchy and Intense fighting- it really feels like they’re fighting for their lives. I can only imagine what the fights are like in Gege’s mind as he races to put on paper that he’s envisioning.

Personally I think Akutami’s peak in art was during his transition from his old style to his current style, during the Hidden Inventory and Shibuya Incident. It just had the right amount of messiness where it conveys all the grit that matches the tone of his series without getting occasionally lost in the sauce that his current style sometimes leaves you. It’s also just clean enough where it doesn’t look as generic as it does at the beginning of the series and still soft enough opposed to currently where everyone looks a bit patchy and squared off. It’s weird because I’ve never seen an artists transition period be better than the original or final product before.

Sometimes I believe that people don’t realize that drawing is somewhat similar to writing. Like yes at the start you are careful, drawing everything with caution but somewhere down the line it becomes like cursive and you form your style and go with it without looking back or checking again because you know it by heart. I think Gege just improved and formed his style and you can see how it is drawn with much more ease and flow. At least that’s how I see it.

I dont know how to describe this artsyle but it reminds me Fujimotos style (cretaor of chainsaw man) with the way the hair has slightly messy scribbles It's really evident in the hands as well. Maybe I'm just reading too deep into this but it really makes the art stand out compared to other manga. Kinda like how togashi draw hands with slightly pointed ends or how he draw the folds in clothing for the characters.

I will say as an artist i've always been a fan of his artwork whether it be 2018 or 2023. The thing about his 2018 artwork is that its hard to mimic though, and at least for me, and I think that's because its harder to make perspective and dynamic figures for your drawings when you always draw with sharp lines instead of using curves every now and then. What I picked up from watching him is that he still has his old art style but hes made it more versatile with curves and dynamic poses for the characters fights and overall just any panel. So now they no longer look stiff or too static

I feel like his art style really shows during certain panels he want to show emphasis on or “big moments”. Usually it’s at a balance or could look a tad bit messy(by that I mean worst than s1 in detail as well as facial structure) but it can compete with some other popular manga’s art styles when he do those impactful scenes since gege really puts a lot of effort into them which is extremely noticeable when compared to panels within the same chapter as the highly detailed panel.

the early art style kinda reminds me of shojo or doujinshi... both styles definitely have their charms but I think the latest (although bombards my eyes at times) is distinct and has a certain appeal that I am drawn to. i feel like gege is more comfortable now in a way

I always prefer chaotic and messy art lol. Especially for series like JJK that have very chatic storylines.

The change in Geges art style was more like of a change in Gojos sharp chin and jawline😂

After the 1st season i feel like he upped the notch in the fights, he tried to make them more anime-like. I think that's specally true in the Maki fight where things were turning into cubes and such

I find that a lot of the new artwork in the manga has made some of the mouths of the characters really wide & big like a puppet's mouth 😅 Gojo's mouth is a good example.

Does Gege draw the background himself?? I know alot of times assistants draw those, like in One Piece.

I like pretty much all the changes .... except for the character designs. They look alien reptilian now, especially Gojo. In fight scenes you could mistake the almost fish-eyed lens effect on the faces as just being characters in motion, but the odd distortion effect is still in place when they're just standing still.

most of the time when you referred to cross-hatching, it was just hatching. it's only cross-hatching if lines of different directions cross over each other.
