JOYEANDBLESSINGS: The Aspern Papers is a remake of the 1947 film "The Lost Moment." ....same plot same everything. The 1947 version had Agnes Moorehead playing the Vanessa Redgrave role and Susan Hayward playing the daughter. Robert Cummings played the male lead.

I am looking forward to seeing this film. Vanessa Redgrave is a marvelous actress and has been for many decades. Her daughter Joely Richardson is cut from the same cloth as her mother. She is simply stunning and mesmerizing to watch on screen. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is very talented in his field. He and Joely are underrated in my book. I have read the novel and if the film's sticks to the story, with this cast it should be really good.
@jackanthony9765 жыл бұрын
TRISHMILLER: The Aspern Papers is nothing but a remake of the 1947 film "The Lost Moment" which starred Robert Cummings, Susan Hayward and Agnes Moorehead. The plot is exactly the same and so is most everything else. It is interesting to see Vanessa Redgrave taking on the role that Agnes Moorehead played in the original 1947 version. I think the original 1947 version was much better as far as the acting is concerned. Although the Aspern Papers has its merits I still prefer the original 1947 version. A lot of these so called new movies are stories taken from obscure old movies of the past. Unlike the foreign and independent film makers, it seems that mainstream film makers are running of out of stories to tell so they are digging into the vaults of long ago forgotten films and remaking them and then promoting them as original plotlines.
@Hannahxx19714 жыл бұрын
I prefer The Lost Moment too. I first watched it when I was young and thought it was creepy and atmospheric in a Great Expectations kind of way. The Aspern Papers lacked life....the setting was superior to the original and the Redgraves do a good job but Jonathan Rhys Meyers was dull, wooden and quite awful and the whole thing just dragged. I only watched it till the end to see if they'd changed the ending in any way and because James Ivory was involved....

This reminds me of a one act play I was in at university. "Lord Byron's Love letter". A small town English couple, sort of nouveau riche, comes across a mother daughter team. The mother is supposedly one of Byron's conquests. Apparently after giving a girl a tumble, he quickly wrote up a nice note, and then went about his business. The implication is that the girl goes on to have his illegitimate daughter. The two survive by charging people a fee to see the note, and meet the mother. Of course, at the time of the play, the daughter is in her thirties and unmarried, the mother is lost in her make believe world about Byron. Their lives are completely centered on a note that may, or may not be from Byron. The daughter has no life other than taking care of her daft mother. Sad.

The TRUTH behind this thinly veiled remake of well known events (that can be said of both the book and movie) is far deeper, profoundly meaningful, and historic than the surface or now common 'decipherment' of this story reveals. It's about Godwin 'rigging up the past' herself together with Mary Godwin Shelly. It's not just about THEM rigging up the past but about the extended family clan of Godwin. A mystery which if you unravel will reveal much about the nature of the world... but it is almost impossible for you to unravel it as the story is constantly refabricated to hide the truth.... you will only understand a little, a little, if you are part of the Guilty.

What happened to Jonathan Rhys Meyer?? He looks very thin. Plus the trailer is a little bit confusing. Didn't liked it at all. But looks beautiful though.
@PetrusSolus5 жыл бұрын
From the trailer, it looks pretty atrocious... where is a genuine Merchant-Ivory approach to be found anymore (in which sex is left to the imagination)? No matter, the film has been roundly denounced by critics, so its fate is sure to be relegated to viewing by Henry James completists. For those who can hunt it down, a previous film version was simply called "Aspern," by one of Jacques Rivette's associates, Eduardo de Gregorio, which he directed in 1982 with Bulle Ogier and Alida Valli in a late role. Although I vaguely recall it had its own art-house pretensions, it was largely a moody, intriguing, low-key, and mysterious film. Perhaps with the failure of this new version, the earlier film will eventually see some fresh distribution?
