In July 1935, two months prior to his death, Long claimed that he had uncovered a plot to assassinate him, which had been discussed in a meeting at New Orleanss DeSoto Hotel. According to Long, four U.S. representatives, Mayor Walmsley, and former governors Parker and Sanders had been present. Long read what he claimed was a transcript of a recording of this meeting on the floor of the Senate.
Long called for a third special session of the Louisiana State Legislature to begin in September 1935, and he traveled from Washington to Baton Rouge to oversee its progress. Although accounts of the September 8, 1935 murder differ, most believe that Long was shot once or twice by medical doctor Carl Austin Weiss in the Capitol building at Baton Rouge. Weiss was immediately shot sixty-one times by Long's bodyguards and police on the scene. The 28-year-old Dr. Weiss was the son-in-law of Judge Benjamin Henry Pavy. According to Mrs. Ida Catherine Pavy Boudreaux of Opelousas, Pavy's only surviving child, her father had been gerrymandered out of his Sixteenth Judicial District because of his opposition to Long.
Shortly after being shot, the expiring Long reportedly said, "I wonder why he shot me." Long died two days later of internal bleeding, following Dr. Arthur Vidrine's attempt to close the wounds.
An alternative theory suggests that Weiss was unarmed and had punched Long, not shot him. Instead, Senator Long was struck by a stray bullet from his bodyguards, who shot Weiss because they mistakenly believed that Weiss was going to shoot Long. Former Louisiana state police superintendent Francis Grevemberg supports this view of the shooting.

Devin Petersen The usage of the word “saying” is only plausibly incorrect if you ignore 2 axioms. The first is quotation. Huey long is cited as the author of the statement. Any alteration to the statement and Huey could not be cited as its author. The second is chronology. “Saying” and “asking” are only definitively different if you ignore the regional diction of rural Louisiana at the beginning of the 20th century.

Interestingly that important information is missing out of the clip: 1. Long accused Dr. Weiss of being married to "coffee-blood," meaning his wife was of mixed race. 2. Multiple witnesses report that Weiss punched Long in the face, and that's when the shooting (by Long's mafia bodyguards) started. 3. The single bullet removed from Long's body did not match the calibre of the pistol Weiss allegedly had. 4. Post-mortem was done and Long's Doctor "missed" a punctured kidney. Long could have been saved but conveniently bled to death. This was ordered by FDR - Long was too popular and he would have been a formidable opponent for FDR!

Either way, Long was too extreme. Even if we are in an extreme condition like the Great Depression, politics should never be extreme themselves. Obama was seen as extreme, because he was the first black president, and he created the ACA ... look who occupied the White House after him. I am very grateful that today's technology offers a lot of transparency.

Weiss had no gun. Long was shot by one of his bodyguards. The bullet caliber taken from Long matched a bodyguard's gun. The gun found in Weiss' car was planted near him to give the impression he shot Long. The bullet was a .38 -- Weiss' gun was a .35.

I still think Weiss did it .. He was a physician, a healer .. why would someone like that be carrying a concealed pistol (a war-issue foreign semi-automatic, no less) on them, esp. going into a state office building? This was well into the civilized 1930s, not the Old West .. He obviously intended to use it while there, is the only explanation ..

Exhuming both their bodies and using modern forensic techniques on both of them (as well as analysis of the crime scene, which is still mostly preserved) as well as on some of the weapons, seems to they should now be able to establish with reasonable certainty what happened and who shot whom. One thing should be to look for traces of gun powder residue on Weiss' hands, which should still be detectable even if the embalmer routinely washed his body, I would think.

If Huey Long had lived and ran for president in 1936 I don’t think he would have won. As that election was, between Franklin D Roosevelt and Alf Landon, FDR won in a landslide. I think FDR would still have won, because the Democratic convention certainly wouldn’t turn it back on a very popular president for a senator who had a reputation of being an authoritarian. I do think that FDR might have been forced to take him as Vice President. if he would have taken it. John Nance Garner, Vice president in FDR‘s first term, was not running for the post again. So, that would have been a definite opening for Huey Long.
@LegalTyranny

Funny you slander Long as an authoritarian when FDR was the one who stayed in power for 4 terms.
@SW2799
@SW2799 2 жыл бұрын
@@LegalTyranny I don’t know if you are referring to my comment when you say That or to one of the other. FDR is one of my favorite presidents. In spite of that, I agree with you that four terms was bordering on authoritarianism or at least the appearance of it. However, during World War II most major western countries Stayed with the same government for the duration of the war or close. Circumstances were that FDR basically had to be elected to those four terms as far as I am concerned. Was that good? No. Should that happen again? No, and the amendment to the constitution prohibiting no more than two terms for a president will see to that. Huey Long was about 10 years younger Than FDR, and seemingly in better health. If Huey Long had been elected President in 1936, he would have probably ran and won again in 1940. That would have ended his terms in early 1945 when the war was still going on. I am sure circumstances would have demanded that he ran for reelection, and I assume he would have won, in 1944. Of course we will never know alternate history but it’s interesting to speculate about it. I definitely respect your opinion, and please respect mine.

Anti-Semite? Perhaps you should look up what a Semite actually is? Here I'll help you a member of any of a number of peoples of ancient southwestern Asia including the Akkadians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Arabs. There is a big difference between a Hebrew and a Jewish person. Sammy Davis Jr. was Jewish because of his faith. The action of calling someone anti-Semite is what certain people do to avoid what is in their closet or to hide their dirty deeds and the bad thing is it works. There are very few original Hebrews left anymore. Most people that are considered Jewish placed that on themselves to avoid usery. Look that up on your own if you want to know what that is.
