TEDx Talks

Күн бұрын

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this jaw-dropping talk, Academy Award winner Dr. Mark Sagar demonstrates his Baby X: a virtual baby that laughs, cries, and learns, driven by a complex series of brain, neural and somatosensory models.
Academy Award winner Dr. Mark Sagar is the director of the Laboratory for Animate Technologies at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, where his interest is in bringing digital characters to life using artificial nervous systems to empower the next generation of human computer interaction. His laboratory is pioneering neurobehavioral animation that combines biologically based models of faces and neural systems to create live, naturally intelligent, and highly expressive interactive systems. Mark previously worked as the Special Projects Supervisor at Weta Digital and Sony Pictures Imageworks and developed technology for the characters in blockbusters such as Avatar, King Kong, and Spiderman 2. His pioneering work in computer-generated faces was recognized with two consecutive Scientific and Engineering Oscars in 2010 and 2011. Dr. Sagar holds a Ph.D. in Bioengineering and is a recipient of the University of Auckland’s 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This is probably one of the most underrated achievements to date... I'm not sure that people understand the profound implications of this incredible development, not only for medicine and pragmatic technology that will flow from it, but for the tremendous philosophical implications. What does this say about our so-called 'free will'? What of the 'spirit' and 'souls'? It says a lot, and fairly definitively. I look forward to a future with more of this. Absolutely incredible.

well yes, but also gives him the perfect chance to slip past many debates and controversy when he's low key like this

This is just amazing!! You can actually see the AI "thinking" and actually learning through experience. This is just amazing. Think where AI will be in 10 years from now. This was 6 years ago and they already achieved that. Mark and his team are brilliant!

What happens if this project gets to such an advanced level that he succeeds in creating a real intelligence inside a computer and that intelligence realises its trapped inside a machine? The potential inteligence like movie Exmachina would potentially be learning about human reactions to its virtual facial expressions, learning soft or subtle manipulation, that inteligence has never felt the warmth of a parents hug or the drag of gravity, there is a lot missing in its environment.

Totally over the top. From limbic systems UP.... this is the AI curve that will dominate the market. Learning systems that learn the way "we" do... totally epic. Beats the top-down concepts in real-time.

When this technology leaks out into the wrong hands, were in trouble. Well essentially have AI with capabilities of committing terrorism without direct commands. They'll have the ability to control whatever. Can't convict a computer. They have the ability to learn and act upon their own thoughts! This technology was also shown in the old Robocop movie. Looks like Murphy in the PC.

Agree. Yes, it's not human. As a mother I had to keep reminding myself as I watched it, "it's not a real baby". Who doesn't love a cute baby (face). Important not to forget the fact it's not a real baby.
