this is gonna sound fake but im jamaican, we have more churches than schools (most schools have a church attached) and people here are fucking psychotic. in eighth grade i stopped talking to a friend bc he was homophobic. word got out (small ass school, class of 25 or less) and a group of "popular' kids basically summoned me and started grilling me about my religious beliefs. when i said im atheist i got "my mom told me not to talk to people like you", "she worships satan" whatever whatever. a few minutes later a kid ran up behind me while i was talking to my cousin and started shaking me by the shoulders yelling "WHY DONT YOU BELIEVE IN JESUS" or some shit. that same friend i stopped talking to was like, begging me to become christian the same way kids beg for burger king on the way home. another friend in eighth grade almost stopped talking to me bc i said i believe in gay rights and she'd smack me when i talked about evolution (came up in class) or cursed around her. she was weird, even for here. when i was 18 i had a crush admit he only befriended me bc people are less likely to listen to you preach the good word if youre a stranger, then started going off about the whole rsid chip mark of the beast, end of days bs. fuck i mean, when i was in line at the passport office the lady sitting next to me just randomy got my attention and said something like "i just want to tell you that jesus is real, and you should submit to him for salvation blah blah blah." i didnt initiate a smidge of contact with this lady. i have no idea what triggered her, i was wearing a goth shirt maybe that i guess???? ive learned to just nod and smile politely when people start going off like that but it happens randomly and constantly here, even if youre not walking around screaming that god is fake and whatever. ive genuinely reached a point where im almost as nervous telling people im atheist as i am telling them im queer. almost. i still know to stay locked way at the back of the closet till i move somewhere people know how to be normal

Especially if you are "muslim" AND atheist (I presume it's the same in christian family, I'm talking about my personal experience). I always had to hide it at school from my muslim friends (like during Ramadan). It's also annoying at work if you have religious collegues, because they WILL judge you. "What?! You're not doing ramadan?? What you eat bacon?!" So yeah, "Just hide it" is not that simple and out of touch. That doesn't mean I was oppressed or whatever, but it can still be a bad experience.
@no_less03

It's not as simple when you're living with a religious family in a religious community/country. Whenever you feel like not following what they say, you may feel anxious, you feel out of place. You're violating your own beliefs system. Now ofc being atheist in developed countries isn't as bad because of education, but you're still susceptible to being a victim of religious hatred and stuff. And ofc, being atheist doesn't feel as bad as being lgbtq+ 'cause you just can't hide being lgbtq.

This is most likely anecdotal. When it comes to atheism in the Texas Latino community, things can get very bad. My ex was asked to go to a Jehovahs Witness event and declined. She keeped being pressed everytime she would decline to go to church and whatever sessions they had. Eventually, she had to tell them she was atheist and the entire church community shut her out. They will actively avoid her in the street, at her place of work, etc. She was no longer allowed to see her nieces and nephews. She was cut off from all her friends and family. I think for some communities, it's a lot worse than the majority of America I think what Hasan doesn't factor sometimes is that it can affect more than just the atheist, especially when you have children.

@@7srchoed you don’t understand, as an example with the blood rule where you aren’t aloud to take transfutions. Lets say I have a child and I am a JW. Then that kid gets into an accident and needs a blood transfusion. If the elders (preists) find out this happened there are stories where they find the hospital you are in and pressure and coerce the parents into not giving the child essential medical care or they will disks fellowship you. If this happens, no one in the church can tall to you. Even your family. So you have to decide between saving your child or losing your family. They police you with their iron grip rules and you are conditioned to police yourself because of the cults indoctrination. This isn’t a normal religion. Another thing you could point to is the CSA violations. If you think the catholic church is bad, you need to stand back in awe at the jehovahs witnesses. Look up the australian royal commission where for religious reasons they thought it appropriate to lie to the government. They call it theocratic warfare, since they ultimate believe that jesus will comeback and set up a government ruled by god they don’t respect and government on earth and ‘pay ceasers things to ceaser’ in all matters except where it violates there teachings. Then they just ignore the law. Or how about when a court found that they had a list of pedophiles and they decided to simply not reveal the names. So the court decided to fine them I think it was 2000/4000 dollars a day. By the time it was settled out of court the fine was ovee 2Million dollars. Its not a systemic sort of thing, but rather very individualized and hyper-specific to your own experiences. So people who have had bad experiences in a very religious community probably do see it as an attack on their being. I haven't told my parents that I'm an atheist because they really don't care (and I often hear them questioning the existence of a God themselves), but I also don't really have any problem following religious customs that we perform as a community because I just see it more as a part of my culture. Chatters comparing it to coming out of the closet are crazy though. Like I'm also bi and it would be a hundred times easier to tell my family that I don't believe in a religion than tell them I like girls.
@christiangrant2931

When it comes to religion it can also just be a highly personal thing. Like I think that comparing the general experience of most atheists to the queer community is absurd, though it's also not about who's more hurt by society, queer people are obviously discriminated against far worse, but it doesn't change that fact that having religious/spiritual beliefs is the norm and being wholly secular absolutely gets you judgement. I can also just say that at least in my specific circumstance my parents are homophobic, but if I told them I was queer they would be disappointed, and we would have many very frustrating conversations, but ultimately they would get over it(stop trying to talk to me about it) and just accept it as a part of me they can kind not think about generally like my other queer family members who they also still accept into the family and do love even if they are being harmful. Whereas if I came out as an atheist it genuinely would ruin their entire relationship and image of me generally. As long as I believe in God then they at least hope that I'll repent and go to heaven eventually, but to deny him in their eyes is to basically turn my back on all that is good and would create a likely insurmountable rift between us as they would see my entire belief system and identity as totally incompatible with theirs.

@@Artofcarissa There definitely is systematic discrimination against atheist there are states in which the state constitution excludes atheist from holding public office and there are countries in which being an atheist holds prison and death sentences. Religious institutions have held sway in society for centuries and institute structures to punish non-believers. While the worst of it has eroded over time there are still structural biases built into society against atheists alongside plenty of other religious groups. While being an atheist is more expected than being gay or trans it's still possible to compare some of the treatment they receive.

You're playing oppression when you say "being trans is harder; therefore, atheists are never oppressed under any circumstances and it's ridiculous to acknowledge any struggles any of them may face". I “came out” as a atheist because I was in the closet bisexual and I wanted to test the waters (I was 19 or 20 at the time) I got back lash from a family member because of it. Which push me deeper into the closet because I thought “if they act like this if I said I was a atheist, then imagine everyone’s reaction if I came out as bisexual.” Now I’m out as bisexual and non binary. Being both bisexual and non binary is a lot difficult than being an atheist.

Hasan is the one doing oppression olympics though. The people in chat were just accurately making comparisons between the two without claiming that one is worse than the other, while Hasan was essentially making the argument that "gay/trans people are more oppressed, therefore atheists aren't at all". Not to mention the oppression of atheists, which a vast majority of LGBTIA people are, obviously affects them too. On top of that, homophobia and transphobia are as prevalent as they are *because* of religion. These are, ultimately, the same issue.

It absolutely isn’t the same as coming out as gay or trans but it isn’t exactly easy either. My girlfriend comes from a staunchly religious family and we live in a very atheist country. She has to hide me, she has to hide all of her hobbies, she has to hide the clothes she wears. It hurts her to know that her family would think she’s possessed by a demon if they knew she has boyfriend or does pole dancing. It also hurts her when she sees how accepting my family is of her and us and how she wishes she could talk about her hobbies with her family like I do with mine. We’re also adults who don’t live with our parents. It isn't really the atheist aspect but more what that super religious parents wont accept, being gay, being trans, having relationships, having certain hobbies.

ExJW here, If you come from a high control religion or a theocracy of some kind then yes it is hard coming out. That transition can be something to have pride in since you were able to overcome your circumstances and will mentally allow you to be more expressive of yourself. Coupled with the fact that the types of situations that I just described are very socially regressive it can allow people who are in the LGBTQIA+ community to come out and be truer to themselves by shaking off the previous ideology and in my case allows me to be a better ally to those who are in that group and people at large since I lost my bigoted ideology. Obviously I went through the le’ reddit atheist phase and now am more melo but I do agree with it being a thing that is important to at least acknowledge, especially for those who come from cults. But in america it doesn’t even come close to being in the LGBTQIA+ community. But there is intersectionality. There is also the thing of Religious Truma and ptsd from being in cults/high control religions which is what I suffer from

"Just lie" is such bad advice, that's not possible when people already know and like, what do you do when people start noticing you don't go to church? What do you do when your Christian parents tell other family members that you're atheist? Hasan has the privilege of not relying on people for shelter and/or financial support that hold negative opinions of him for his beliefs. my problem with religion and how engrained it is in our society is that it is the product of faulty thought processes, and dogmatic thinking, both of which are detrimental to progressive ideals. also, it encourages blind faith in authority, which then shuts off people’s ability to think for themselves. thoughts influence actions in the real world like how you vote, which is a problem because these institutions are so domineering and huge. there’s a reason that highly religious communities tend to vote conservative.

I don't think that atheists are oppresses broadly in the social order. However, I do think that for individuals within families which are very religious, stating that you no longer believe in God to them can be a difficult experience. Sure, its not nearly as bad as say coming out to trans, but most teens don't have that experience as a reference point, so it's easy to understand how they could come to see themselves as oppressed. In my own life, I havn't fully expressed my beliefs to my parents and church community yet, because I do care about them, and don't want to distress them.

There's plenty of families and areas of the country where coming out as gay isn't particularly intimidating and same goes for atheists. But there are also areas of the country where doing either can be intimidating and in regards to his argument about "just hide it" or "just don't say it" how is that any different than being gay lmao .You can just not tell people that you're gay. You can actively "hide" it just like you can hide being an atheist in conversations and still begrudgingly attend church / mosque /temple or whatever but you should not have to. I personally don't claim to have had a particularly tough time being an atheist but I have some Muslim-background friends for instance who would definitley find it INCREDIBLY difficult to tell their parents they are atheists. They still go to the mosque purely to please their parents. The same goes for being a socialist in America. Like yeah I don't HAVE to tell anyone that. I don't have to "wear" it. I don't have to engage in any kind of political activism. But I do. And I know plenty of reactionary people feel some type of way about it. I've mentioned it at work before and I could just see several of my clearly right-wing/libertarian christian coworkers scowling. like yeah you CAN hide it just like you can hide being gay but you shouldn't have to. you should not feel ashamed for being an atheist or a socialist. you are on the right side.

Even if “coming out” as an atheist was as hard as coming out as gay, you only really have to do it like once or twice to your family. Being gay you have to effectively come out like every time you want to hold hands outside. I’ve had to come out at every job I’ve ever had, it’s literally never come up that I’m an atheist

it is funny that being gay in saudi arabia is easier than in america. no one would care if you hold hands or kiss on the cheeks or hug a man. just dont announce it and you are fine. even if someone reported you for being gay no one would listen to them as they should mind their own business. and worse comes to worse you just denie it and move on. the government and most people dont care about you being gay or non muslim as long as you dont advertise it.

@@eylo7113 And if you do "advertise it" (meaning literally just existing), the government is legally able to execute you. Ah yes, so much easier.

So, I agree with Hasan for the most part, especially concerning comparing being atheists to being queer or Black. And it is mildly (emphasis on mild) annoying having to lie or obfuscate once every blue moon about not having religious beliefs but it definitely isn’t a “thing” the way I am bi or Black. However, I do know that certain family members would cease contact with me if they knew, or would make all contact about converting me back. Maybe it’s a Black Christian thing, idk. Still, I also don’t care enough about being an atheist that I would let that get in the way of my relationship with my family, so yeah, Hasan is right here.

I will also say I felt stronger about this when I was newer in being nonreligious. I was in a neverending series of arguments with family and felt way more “under attack” because of that. It’s been about 5-6 years since then and I feel a lot more secure and don’t take things as seriously anymore. So some chatters may still be early on and feel more scrutinized by the people around them than they will in a few years.

Besides, after a few years everyone kinda knows about it and give up getting you in the club of heaven goers. But some families are entirely religious and there it'll not be as easy for sure.

It's definitely not like coming out as gay or trans but I don't think Hasan gets it. That take about how being disowned from your family is wild. Also often times you can't just lie. You have to go to church and keep up appearances and sometimes if you're unlucky you were forced into an early marriage and so you have to deal with being disowned by your spouse too. Depending on the religion(take me for example, ex JW) and area it can be really bad being an atheist. There is no systemic oppression of atheists, but religious trauma is real and being ostracized is a real thing and a very bad thing too, Hasan

Atheism is much less of a big deal in the West than it is in the East. In India, where I live (although I'm an American), religion is a part of life to the point where the government doesn't even recognize atheism as a thing on the census. But back home in Alabama, getting called the n-word, getting profiled by bureaucrats, and getting harassed by cops for being brown was a bit worse than not being an evangelical, to be honest.

The US is a very religious country, it fr seems like catholic or bust I get that it would be harder to come out when you live in such a religious community. In Sweden we are a majority of non-practicing protestants so saying that you’re an atheist isn’t an issue at all, lots of people who technically are christians don’t even believe in god here

Verdict or tldr: I refuse to pretend to be something I'm not. I refuse to let christianity be normal. I refuse to lie about my beliefs, because we would never expect them to. Hasan doesn't know how bad it is, and he just seems to repeat "it wasn't that bad for me." Everyone's parents has mixed reactions about coming out as atheist, trans, or gay. Personally my parents died inside when I said I wasn't mormon and then they couldn't care less about my sexuality. Point is, the nations opinion on atheists is highly unfocused and highly inconsistent, but it is wrong and frankly infuriating to hear people it doesn't exist because they don't personally witness it. Let's get some numbers up in here, let's keep it an ongoing conversation, let's get Aron Ra on the stream (PLEASE), and let's stop jumping to conclusions and telling people they're dying for oppression. Because if my religious trauma isn't real, and if my current anxiety from the backlash from my religious exit is all made up, then I need a college of therapists to do a ton of explaining. I'm scared to watch this. My mormon family flipped when I came out as atheist. I just want to live a normal life without supernatural beliefs, but religious people are the ones making the whole world not normal, and I have to make it my personality to be an atheist or else things will never be normal. I have been told "it's not that serious" and "don't make it your whole personality" in so many secular and "undecided agnostic" spaces that trying to be an atheist is just a constant existential crisis, I am constantly being told that I am the crazy one. I posted on the atheism subreddit recently, after years of ignoring reddit completely, and it was the only warm welcome I've ever had to just wanting to live a normal life free of superstition. It's so weird how people react to just cold hard scientific life, like they are so desperate for their life's purpose to be supernatural or eternal. I literally had someone tell me they would rather die than live in a world with no supernatural phenomena like my atheist one. I don't think atheists are conciously oppressed (outside of god fearing brimstone hellfire sermons) but I think people subconciously refuse to allow atheism the same credibility and representation that they'll give ANY religion or cult. Mitt Ronmey is a Mormon senator that alnost became president, but iirc the highest level elected atheist was a singular state level congressman, like not even the big government congress. So I will edit this with my reaction. "You never have to bring up atheism. Lie." Bro WHAT, NO! Hasan says he would rather have friends outspoken about their supernatural beliefs than people outspoken about trying to be normal, and that makes no sense to me! Religion should not be the normal! "You're just looking for a crumb of oppression." This is so... Idk it makes me feel like I'm going insane. I've been told I didn't understand atheism, that atheism isn't real, that I haven't done anything to earn the title atheist, that atheists are just lost christians, thay atheists are liars that want to sin, that atheism is inherently dangerous, that atheism is depressing, that I have been possessed by Satan to the point of having a confounded understanding, that all atheists are pdf files, and I've been told that my opinions are not credible anymore because I have lost the holy spirit. Idk may I call any of that oppression? Are they attacking my identity here or not? I am in some exmuslim spaces that are afraid to say they don't believe in allah because they think they will be assaulted. And it's an illogical fear, two in Iran were executed by a state court I think recently. I know this doesn't happen in America but just don't compare hate crimes against the two, I think it turns into a mess of numbers, it's just bad for both groups. "I'm sorry your grandmother stopped talking to you." I got kicked out of my house. I was forced to go to scripture study class and my whole group knew it. I didn't want it to be a big deal, I mean it's not normal to force your kid to go to religious class but I thought I would lay low and play Tetris on my phone every day (no audio of course, not distracting). One day a girl asked me why I wasn't reading the book of mormon with them and I told her to stop asking questions. She persisted. I said "I just don't believe in god, don't worry about it." She cried and asked more questions and it interrupted the whole class. Mormon wearing special underwear, a ring that makes their marriage last after death, another ring reminding them not to have thoughts god doesn't like, passalong card in their pocket, saving for their mission, easter pageant on the calendar, stopping a conversation to pray that their fast food will nourish and strengthen them: "Atheists are weird, they should just lie and not talk about their beliefs." My mormon psych would not have repirted my suicidal ideation to any sort of database or data collection, if there was any. He makes a point about trans suicide rates and then there doesn't seem to be a number for atheists, because nobody bothered to collect info on us. Iirc blasphemy and atheism was made legal the same year as honosexual sex. Hasan is wrong about atheism not being illegal. And then forgets about the Scopes Monkey trial to get evolution in schools.

@@CJMGalaxy I added it thanks. I would try to cut down the whole comment but it's too big for my phone to handle without lag. Maybe I can make it even shorter. Basically we need data on this instead of relying on everyone's personal experience. Data might be spotty, so conclusions shouldn't be made immediately. I think Hasan missed some of the history too like blasphemy laws and evolution in the supreme court. We need to have a modern youtube atheists, not the weird anti-sjw wave, to have a talk about the history of atheism in the US because this video felt very surface level. Maybe Aron Ra or Matt Dillahunty.
