In my 56 years I have spent my money on records, motorcycles & good whiskey. The rest I just wasted. I'm also the guy Steve mentioned that can't hear the difference between cheaper stuff & expensive stuff. The stereo is only a means of playing my records, it need not be anything more than that. Having said that, after watching Steve's videos for close to a year now, I have figured out how to upgrade what I have been using for a few years now, without spending much money, but getting a real return on improved sound quality. Thanks Steve.

Yeah - i agree. I think cables can/may give you that missing "last 1/10th" on a high-fi or even mid-fi system, but they won't turn $500.00 gear into $5000.00 gear. I think sometimes, that's the unrealistic picture and talk track that people hear.

Steve is actually talking directly to me, teaching me I'm not an audiophiliac--cables is just one thing I wouldn't spend top-dollar on. I am that guy who confronts the audiophile, saying, "If Bose is overpriced garbage, then show me something as good or better for less money." And ya know what? You guys delivered and helped me build a quality system for half the cost of my old and dying Bose system. For that, I'm eternally grateful, because it opened a whole new world. Best transparent comment I've read so far! Thank You for sharing. I'm curious, what kind of system did you by to replace your Bose with?
@ForOrAgainstUs
@ForOrAgainstUs 4 жыл бұрын
@@ythagakure First off, this is meant to be a beginner system which is also modular. Also, I think I made a mistake in my speaker choice but I'm not sure! I didn't get the Dayton B632s. I got the Polk T15s because they got slightly better reviews. Second I'm coming from a Bose computer audio system, the Companion 3 Series 2. Very small but very nice. I was looking at replacements and they are going for $300 used. I can't remember how much I bought the system for, but it was 12 years ago that I bought them. So anyway, I bought the Kinter K2020A+, Polk PWS10 sub, and the Polk T15s. With wires and everything the total came out to like $222 with shipping. I'm coming from a computer, so delving a little into the audiophile world, I decided to buy a Schiit Modi, which is still on its way. Altogether, I think I probably spent about as much today as I did on the Bose, ~$350. I also bought speaker stands too and a bluetooth module so I can take over the computer audio. It's all modular so I can upgrade anything I want. I haven't fully tested it because I'm moving this week from a townhouse to a single family so I'll be able to crank it guilt free. Either way, this purchase makes me feel like I accomplished something and can't wait to see how the upgrades go.

@@ForOrAgainstUs Thank you for sharing. I appreciate it. Congratulations on your purchase. That Schiit Modi will be a nice addition to your computer setup. Definitely like the Polks. I still have a pair of Polk Audio rti a3 I purchased way over a decade ago. Please make sure to buy better than normal cables for all of your connection. Despite the nay sayers, it really does make a difference in computer audio. The next best investment IMO would be a great pair of headphones along with a Headphone Amp. My 2 cents: I want people to get off the internet and go to a typical electronics store that sells home theatre systems. Chances are you can score a really good deal on a clearance item or amp/speaker combo pack. You'll rarely get better deals online. And FYI, nobody should spend $550 on Klipsch RP600M speakers (they get recommended a lot) because they often go on sale.

For my main stereo I built 4 eight foot speaker cables for $175.00. I have also built all my own interconnects, 6 three foot cables for less than $100.00. All these for a system worth about $4000.00 and I will never feel the need to upgrade.

Seems like you’re conflating cable deniers with non-audiophiles; usually, if one who invests a lot into their audio sound cares enough about audio to logically rule out cables specifically, they are fairly hard core audiophiles (they specifically think cables are snake oil). Whereas those who don’t care about sound at all, will also think that ANYTHING (including components) that’s remotely high end, is snake oil (they don’t care about sound).

ive got about 90K into my system, and i have relatively inexpensive cables and interconnects, because I have tried the 700 bucks a foot stuff and it just does not make a difference, if it did, and it was a good difference, i would buy it. i just dismiss the crazy stuff you talk about and hone in on your enthusiasm :) most people like me care a lot about music and sound reproduction, my daughter is a steinway artist, and i can pick out a piano on a good stereo system and tell you the brand and size... just thousands of hours of listening to her practice. So sound matters to me, but in my experience, cables and interconnects just dont matter, so i buy them for the looks!!! everything else does sound different to me, although speakers are the most obvious "non-snake" component... thanks for your 5000 reviews, ive been reading your print articles since your very first one, as i was a stereophile subscriber starting back in 1982 i think... take care.

I have listened to a lot of equipment and I perform record player repairs semi-professionally (primarily high end 70s and 80s Japanese and German stuff). I think a lot of people are wasting their money on snake oil. I often have customers coming over and they’re really astonished when they listen to my 70s Luxman amp (which I fully refurbished) which is hooked up to some 80s Tannoy monitors and a Topping DAC. Then I show them the cables and DAC that I use and they can’t believe their ears. I’ve listened to the most expensive amplifiers available from the Netherlands (Hypex) and I still think my Luxman amp sounds better, even though the total harmonic distortion is much higher. Most modern audio doesn’t come close to refurbished old high quality stuff for the price. Especially with record players. I have listened to multi-thousand euro cartridges (Benz micro etc.) and I don’t think they sound much better than my old SME 3009 with a Denon DL-103S (Shibata stylus). There is a lot of snake oil out there. Most of my customers are 50+ years old. They think they can pick up the tiniest details. I am a biomedical scientist in my day to day life and I can tell you, the human ear is not capable of doing that. Impossible. Especially at that age. Cables are not going to make the difference. You won’t be able to tell the difference in a blind test. I’ve tried with multiple people and no-one beat chance.

Yamaha pre-amp/streamer, Emotiva XPA2 power amp and a pair of full range floor standing electrostatic speakers. Sounds amazing. Over the years I have taken the time to study and understand audio engineering and I can spot snake oil at 20 paces. For example, I know for sure that audio and power cables do not require complex and expensive construction. I also have many years experience in radio communications and I know that radio frequency cables can becritical in their construction. This is not so at audio frequencies and expensive audio cables are snake oil. And don’t get me started on so called “hi-res” audio.

Walmart discontinued this product years ago, but for a while, it was highly recommended and sought-after in the DIY community. I would recommend trying solid core, 18 gauge copper wires with minimal insulation as both speaker cable and Interconnect for DIY projects. It also may help to separate the positive and negative wires in a pair by six to twelve inches.

@pandstar

The only thing is, that there is no objective level of improvements for what each of us considers diminishing returns. While it is true, that the percentage of improvement that is achieved is almost never equal to the percentage of increase in money spent, that doesn't mean that the small improvement is not worth it to some of us. And also, each of us hear differently. Some aspect of music that may be unimportant, or not very audible to one person, may stick out like a sore thumb to another. And finally, the better one's equipment is to begin with, the more audible small changes are. Remember, the vast majority of people out there, listen to all their music using MP3, on smartphones, with $20 earbuds, and they think even the most modest, good, system is beyond the point of diminishing returns.

@pandstar

Just playing devil's advocate here... But, you don't think that the LCR (inductance, capacitance, resistance) parameters of various cables could make a difference? After all, LCR is what makes up filters, such as crossovers. You do know that those parallel cables do create an inductance, and the insulation between the cables do create a capacitance, right? What about the inability of a cable to reject stray RF? After all, they are constantly in our environment. You don't think that picking up radio signals could add hash to the existing audio signal coming from the amp on the wire? So, there are things to measure with cables, that could make a difference. I am not saying that they make an audible difference, that is up to each to determine, but there is a measurable difference.

My stance is at times that of the skeptic (not denier), and a good part of that comes from that manufacturers sometimes use scientific facts to hype their products when those facts aren't relevant for audio, but it takes a knowledgeable person to look past "this actually is a fact" to "it doesn't apply here". I've seen cable manufacturers claim to improve sound by doing things that would only apply to signal frequencies in the GHz range, and so on. So since there are people that de facto sell snake oil one must have a skeptical starting point. There is also the issue of that if a cable sounds different it's very possible that it doesn't transmit the signal better but actually does the opposite (as some high end cables have been shown to do in some tests), making it act like a passive tone control. Of course that doesn't have to be a negative if you enjoy the change, and it's all subjective, although I prefer my tonal changes to be in other parts of the chain. It's interesting that everyone that experience these changes nearly always say it's for the better though. The changes are somehow very rarely described as worse. I don't care what people spend money on though, and it's all part of an interesting topic. I'd be especially thrilled to see some claimed effects being tested as, if true, it would evolve our scientific knowledge. After all we should strive for knowledge.

Yes, agree with skepticism as opposed to denial. If you can’t hear the difference (or can’t afford to buy the higher priced item), you’re done. Just are wary of the astronomical prices for items in general that claim to improve performance but offer no quantifiable proof of being better than a cheaper option.

I´ve given up on solid state cables. I´m now using hoses filled with water. Water is a far superior electricity conductor than solid state cables. It makes the sound a lot more pliable, even liquid if you get my meaning. On very cold days somehow the sound becomes more harsh and brittle, but nothing beats water cables in the summer months. I've ordered melted 10 000 year old ice from Siberia to see if it makes a difference, but shipment is held up due to the pandemic.

I think among these fights over dacs or cables, most audiophiles tend to forget that the most returns in sound quality comes from treating your room properly, then using a system like dirac or ik to fine tune it(cause by only treating acoustically, you can get extremely good results alone, but more you get closer to the goal, more costly and huge in size the panels will be, so a lot of people like me prefer a hybrid approach). I don't own any audiophile grade gears, i have a yamaha hs 8 coupled with a 12 inch sub by prodipe. They get the signal from my focusrite interface. In my room they sound great and measures exceptionally good at the sweet point (where I sit). At work i have a neumann nearfield fed by apollo 8p and adam a77x near to midfield fed by apollo 8p /ssl 6. A lot of my audiophile friends with expensive seperates got shocked to hear their music in both the places. Even better, few of them, brought their setups just to check (what a painstakingly complicated procedures with all the seperates) and most of them agreed that their systems sounded way better in our places. And we use pretty cheap sommer cables. No power conditioner either. My point is before spending a single dime on a better dac, spend as much as possible for room acoustics. Calibrate your system. Find out the sweet point. Position the speakers. These things will bring the optimum performance of your existing system and the improvements will be drastic not subtle. Just my 2 cents. No disrespect to anyone. Thanks.

I don’t think serious audiophiles will expect a huge difference, it all depends how ”big” that small difference will be. Can’t remember if it was David Gilmour that said he can’t even change one cable in the setup without changing the sound. A tiny difference could be a big deal. Personally I think tubes make much more of a contrast.

Recent experience: with the assistance of my wife, I ran a blind test with my Yamaha CD-S300. Set all receiver tone controls to flat. Connected to receiver with standard RCA analog cables (they came with the unit) with Pure Direct off, connected to receiver with standard RCA analog cables with Pure Direct on, connected to receiver with high-end coaxial cable. Listened with back turned wearing Status CB-1 headphones. Test CDs were Joe Jackson's Blaze of Glory, Michael Franks Blue Pacific, AC/DC Back In Black, and Alison Krauss and Union Station Live. Could not hear any difference whatsoever between RCA analog cable connect (Pure Direct off) and coaxial cable connect. But, surprisingly, I could hear the improvement of Pure Direction (better S/N ratio?) every time. I figured the coaxial would provide noticeable improvement and considered Pure Direct to be snake oil. I was so wrong. Just goes to show - your ears know best! Next test - high-end RCA cables vs those that came with the unit.

I've been reading your articles as far as I can remember. You're a great writer and reviewer and you care about what you do. I spent a silly amount of money over the years on audio gear, but I don't regret it. I learned a lot. I learned enough to know that the return-on-investment is an asymptotic function in audio : Passed the first 15 grand, the reward for every extra dollar spent falls very rapidly. Sure, a million-dollar system can knock your socks off, but at that point, how much of it is related to enjoying music, versus listening to sound ? I also learned that some components in a reproduction chain are more important than others, in the sense that the money committed to the part, has more impact. I'd rank speakers at the top, followed by the source. As it stands today, there is less and less in-between and some of the best speakers are actively amplified - they can be driven by a DAC or a preamp. As for cables... I owned cables that cost the price of a car; never again. You can tell the difference between a well-engineered cable and a lousy one, but you can't tell the difference between a well-engineered cable that costs 50 $ and one that costs 5000 $. Ultimately, the most important part of the audiophile experience, is the quality of the recording.

I have found that cables & interconnects do make a difference. In most cases the differences can be small but it depends on what you are listening for. No one set of cables or interconnects has given me that OMG look what I was missing revelation. That said they have given me insight to more sheen on cymbals, a little more grit or smoothness on vocals of artists I've seen perform live & depth of soundstage. For me, nothing earth shattering yet still audible. Audio's inherent laws of diminishing returns as price increases holds true for basic components as well as the more esoteric items such as cabeling. The wiring inside my old Klipsch La Scallas was impressivly tiny yet they conveyed plenty of musical nuance but I did notice subtle changes in musical character when swapping out speaker cables. For those of us that audio is a hobby we will continually tweak & experiment with our systems. It's what we do. For those who's audio systems are an appliance that should perform as expected when fired up, awesome! Satisfaction is where you find it.

Yes I am here for steve's shirts. I can hear a difference in cables, it maybe only a 5-10% difference but there is a difference! My system is from 1974, Maramtz 2230 and a Pioneer PL-12D with a AT 95E cartridge. it took me only 5 seconds to here it, it was small and hard to put my finger on it but something was wrong! I hate compressed sound and some cables were compressing the sound. I would love to try some silver wire cables, I like the highs. and also learn the other different sounds from different cables. I think that a lot of audiophile people spend a lot of money on equipment when they don't have, and will ever have, an ear for music.

I used to scorn the idea of expensive power cords. Then someone I know (who designs and mods equipment) suggested I give it a try. He is the same one who told me back in the 80's to use litz wire for my speaker cables (which was a real eye opener for me)... So, I laid out the money for some decent audiophile power cords. Have not looked back at stock cords since. I was once ornery as the doubters about power cords until he convinced me to give them a try. And, they do not have to be ultra expensive. Pangea power cords is a great place to get baptized into the world of power cords.

Your first paragraph pretty much sums it all up for me. I love audio gear and I'm even willing to pay for looks, esoteric technology, rarity, etc. But I can't hear the difference between most of the things in the margins like cables or even DACs. Speakers, amps, vinyl vs CD? Sure! But cables, styluses, FLAAC vs. DSD, nope. And I seriously doubt the people who claim they can. But hey, buy what makes you happy, but claim that no A/B test can show the difference? I call BS. If a person can't hear the difference, then how can you claim a person can hear the difference? You can hear it, but not in an A/B test. Really? Do I REALLY need to explain how ridiculous that is? Or maybe someone should explain to me how that works. You can hear it, but not in a back to back test with only one variable changed. I won't accept medicine that isn't tested scientifically and I don't believe there's anything but imagination at work when something can't be heard without the benefit of visual cues. Again, I'm not saying no one should buy thousand dollar cables. They look cool and they are really nice, but don't claim indignantly that you can truly hear the difference unless you are willing to just test it simply by letting someone give you a back to back listening demo in a controlled environment. Again, do what makes you happy, but don't deny the scientific method, or I'm going to ask you to buy my death defying anti-aging miracle elixir for $800 per 3 month dose and I'm going to be incensed when you try to tell me the science behind it is weak. Oh, and I resent the idea that believing scientific method is a valid way of evaluating the audio performance of HiFi equipment makes me something other than an audiophile.

I don't class myself an audiophile but I do appreciate good sound. I am a cable/interconnect denier. I do believe there's a difference in sound between different speakers, Amp, CD"s etc because they often have many components and physical parts that can and do affect sound. But I just can't believe anything more than a basic good quality and possibly shielded cable. I do believe in the placebo effect and that if you believe it sounds better then it probably does....to you. I also factor in our own equipment, our ears (as well as brain for placebo effect) I work with a young lady with hearing problems, she works with telephony and so has to have an ear piece to aid hearing, she also needs this item adjusted every so often because she says her hearing becomes accustomed to the sound levels and adjusts itself accordingly which in the end would cancel out the benefit of the hearing aid. So I believe when we hear a new item, speakers, amp etc that we hear a difference but maybe only because our ears acclimatise to our current set up and when we hear a new set up we have a veil has been lifted moment until our ears acclimatise to that, in this way I think we will always hanker for a new sound. I'm not saying equipment doesn't improve sound but rather our hearing gets accustomed to it and finds it's own level anyway. I believe any cable that MAY change the sound is negligible and many other factors need exploring first, no point having great cable if your system is crap to start with. Also, I can't believe any perceived differences justify paying £1000 per mtr for 99.9% pure copper cryogenically frozen cable when a basic good quality cable will do wonders, anything else is just big bucks for very, very, little bang... if any. If you believe it works and you have deep pockets and more money than sense then good on you, what you do is up to you and if it makes you happy, do it, life is to short not to enjoy it.

Hey Audiophiliac! I'm not a denier per se, but I do think there's a learning curve. I got into this hobby fairly late, and before I got my system I drove myself nuts making budgets on parts that I wanted. It was SO easy to go down the rabbit hole and make an imaginary system that kept on increasing in price. But I saw a video about another reviewer (the recovering audiophile, his name escapes me, but he is awesome), where he talked about exactly that, and how easy it is to go chasing that next device or speaker. That made me reassess, and instead of having to wait for a year while I saved up for that magical pair of speakers, or worse, get a loan, I bought myself a cheery little sprout100 and a pair of second hand Wharfedale towers. A tweeter blew out on me, so I have to get a new pair, but I'm thinking of getting an open baffle sub kit and a pair of speakers from GR Research. I digress. I thought I would need a dedicated network streamer such as a bluesound node, but when I streamed the music from my phone with Bluetooth, I found the result astonishing. A streamer may do it better, but I think you have to have something to compare it to that you know fairly well. Like when you are tasting wine or whiskey. To me all wines taste basically the same (like crap), but I can tell the difference between whiskeys, and detect the nuances. Maybe, after I'm used to my new speakers, I might buy a new amp, maybe not. Pretty happy with the one I have. But I'm not going to play around with expensive cables before my ears have enough of a background, training, to hear the difference. But logically, cables of different materials must have different physical properties. I may play around with the notion when I've got a few more years under my belt as an audiophile
